I don't know if he can play, but Patchan can sprint like a motherfucker. Looked like a 250 lb. DE.

He's your kind of guy:
Missed the 2012 season because of injury ... played in the first four games on the offensive line as a sophomore before an injury sidelined him for the year ... missed the 2010 season because of injury.

Dakota Dozier of Furman is getting some good reviews. Small-school tackle who moved to G in the Shrine game and did well. I also think Gabe Jackson, MS ST, has looked pretty athletic considering he's like 6'3" 325 lbs.

A.C. Leonard, TN State, had the best 40-time at 4.43. He was a Florida recruit out of high school but transferred, apparently partially for football reasons and partially because of some off-field stuff (a battery charge). He weighed in at 6'2" 252, so he's more of an H-back type than a true in-line option.

The 4.62 by Burton is pretty solid. I know it's pretty linear thinking, looking at a Gator tight end, but he seems to really fit the Hernandez profile.

Without all the murder and such.

I don't think he's a TE ... he weighed in at 224.

I haven't been a big Amaro fan, and he posts a 4.74.

I've been a huge fan of CJ Fiedorowicz (yeah, I can spell that w/o looking it up), and he posts a 4.76.

Then there's Ebron with a 4.50 / 4.50 -- Christ that dude's going to be a monster.

Lyerlay did a 4.59 on his second run, "a big variance" according to Mayock. I'm all for Pats taking a chance on him late round.

RT @DougKyedNESN: I would be surprised if Jace Amaro gets drafted in the first round.

I still think the Pats draft him in the first if he is still there. Because I doubt he will be there in the second when they pick again

James Christiansen of @NEPatriotsDraft is speculating on Twitter that the quality and depth of the Alabama roster is a detriment to these guys when they try and get to the pros. Referenced comments from Eddie Lacy that guys would practice hurt because if they didn't, they were sure to lose their job.

I don't really buy this. For one thing, that's pretty much true at the NFL level too (needing to practice/play hurt). For another, it seems the additional competition level is going to be more than worth it.

@nfldraftscout: That said, I know of several teams that talk about Alabama system running guys into the ground. Bama players hit NFL with wear and tear.

Maybe this is what you're referencing but I'm reading that several teams failed Kouandijo on his physical, citing an arthritic knee.

I doubt he would either, but I don't know that he's a Pats-type player. He was hardly ever used in-line and there are concerns about how much of his production was due to the system. He didn't distinguish himself today. I think grabbing Niklas in the 2nd or Fiedorowicz in the 3rd is better value than Amaro in the 1st.

I wonder if part of it is less projectability because of the high quality of coaching they get in college.

Ebron's official was a 4.60 - still very good but a far cry from Vernon Davis territory.

Fiedorowicz had the best time in the 20-yard shuttle and 3-cone as well, it looks like. Those are drills the Pats historically seem to put weight on.

Lost in the hubbub over Belichick cutting his Combine press conference short, he did give a coherent answer as to why the Pats value the 3-cone drill:

I think it gives you some evaluation of a combination of his lateral movement and vertical movement. We can see the vertical movements in the 10s, the 40s – 10-20-40, that’s all one drill. The shuttle drill, for the skill players, which is a 60-yard test but it’s all vertical. The 20-yard 5-10-5 change-of-direction drill is really a lateral drill. The L drill or 3-cone drill combines a vertical and lateral element with it.

Q: One more on Lombardi. How come you didn’t hire him in those five years he wasn’t with any team?

BB: We always do what we think is best for our football team.

Q: Given the amount of turnover you had on offense this past year, do you feel it may be a little more important to have some continuity on the offensive side of the ball this year, in terms of personnel?

BB: I don’t know.

Clasicccccc. How can you not love Bill Belichick?

Incredible how deep this WR class is. If patriots could get a guy like Brandin Cooks WR Oregon State in second round would be a real nice replacement for Julian Edelman. Very quick twitched athlete who could help in special teams and explodes in the slot. He just ran two unofficial 4.30.

Agreed.  I also wonder if it gets hard to evaluate Bama players because 1) (as SN noted) they have such good coaching at college level there is limited development left skill-wise and 2) the breadth of talent is such that it's hard to figure out who is exceptional and who is coasting off their teammates.    Certainly, with Alabama RBs the quality of blocking impacts the assessment; with the DL/LB, there's so many guys to scheme for someone is going to get a chance to shine against the weaker blockers each game.

Jerick McKinnon of Georgia Southern just ran a 4.38 40. He started his college career as a corner (where at 5'9", he's probably a slot-only guy) and played option QB and RB the past couple seasons. Raw but a great athlete - he led all RBs in bench reps and was 2nd in the vertical jump. Might be an interesting late-round RB / special teams / developmental prospect.

And Clowney is done for the day.  Won't participate in drills and will "stand on his 40 time."

EDIT:  According to the Twitters, Mayock is on some sort of anti-Clowney tirade.  Says he isn't a top five pick.

Sigmund Bloom ‏@SigmundBloom  2m
I wouldn't really care about Mayock's anti-Clowney crusade if his takes didn't seem to move needle for NFL teams, but I'm afraid they do.

Doug Kyed ‏@DougKyedNESN  3m
Mike Mayock has some real beef with Jadeveon Clowney.

EDIT2:  Not completely done for the day I guess:

Scott Hanson ‏@ScottHanson  1m
Clowney says he will still vertical jump and broad jump.

That number is mind blowing.

Can the Pats offer any package to the Texans for a move up? Multiple #1's and #2 picks? Can we pull a Saints/Ricky Williams thing? He's actually worth it.

I can't imagine either the Patriots or Texans doing something like that, though I'm on record as saying that I'm salivating over the prospect of pairing Clowney with Chandler Jones on the ends.  Holy smokes.

Huge WTF to the NFL Combine with the unofficial stopwatch time and the 2 hour delayed official electronic times at the combine. We just watched the Olympics, electronic timing with immediate results to the hundredth of second exists.

It would have to be a pretty insane package.  Going by the trade charts--which actually are pretty accurate when you look at what trades get down--the number one pick is worth 3000. while the Pats 1-3 round picks add up to about 1060 (the later picks have pretty neglibgle value, droping from 50 down to about 3.). So even without discounting for future value and assuming the Pats would be near the end of the draft you'd have to do something like three years of our first, second and third round picks.
