It's early, and it's also late- tickets went on sale on the 9th. My mom just retired from teaching school and I'm thinking of inviting her up to NYC for the open as a retirement gift. Anyone have tips? I'm thinking along the lines of Grounds Passes, Value Plan, Finals grounds admissions.

I've been a few times, and I guess it depends on how much time you have and what you are looking for.  In my opinion, I think that two of the best days are the Sunday and Monday (Labor Day) sessions.  By this time, there usually are a few upsets and underdogs still making noise.  I've always had tickets to Ashe, but the idea of roaming around to Louis Armstrong and the Grandstand is a lot of fun.  And you can make a weekend out of it and enjoy NYC if you have the time.  The evening sessions for the Quarterfinals are also a lot of fun.

As for the ticket timing....I always bought tickets about a week before the matches, but I wouldn't hold off as I think they're going at a much quicker rate.  The last match I saw live was the Agassi/Blake in the 2005 Quarterfinals...awesome match and atmosphere but, as you can see, that was awhile ago so the ticket timing may have changed.

I really don't think you can go wrong as long as the weather is good...it is a great atmosphere and overall experience.

Earlier in the tourney the better.  Get grounds passes for the day (you can see top 15 players on courts that you can sit incredibly close to) and Ashe for the night.  If you get Ashe tickets, spend the extra money and sit in the first two sections.  The upper level is just way too far to see.

I have stayed right in the city every time until last year when I go a hotel right near the tournament.  It was within walking distance and was much less expensive.

I don't know what "Finals Ground Admissions" are - to me it sounds like you can get into the grounds but not the stadium for the final.  Personally, to me, that doesn't sound that appealing.

Finals grounds admissions is $25/day and they have big screens setup and a food court. I figure if my mom comes all the way from Florida, it's a nice way to see the finals - in the atmosphere of the grounds where we've been all week.

I'm trying to figure out, if you have tickets to Ashe, does that give you access to roam around and go to Armstrong and Grandstand general admission if you like? The Value Plan tickets available right now are Ashe nosebleeds, but are cheaper than if I bought grounds passes for the equivalent number of days.

Yes, Ashe tickets get you in everywhere (small exception: the few reserved seats in Armstrong). Ground passes get you in everywhere except Ashe (and those same reserved seats).

I prefer the Thursday and Friday of the first week. Second toes matches, and still enough of them to just wander into a great match
