16 (471): @RedSox select Stanford RHP Marc Brakeman. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2015/drafttracker.jsp#ft=team&fv=bos …  #MLBDraft

#141 on BA and #123 on PG.

Brakeman has a long track record, which will help him after arm soreness limited him to nine starts this spring for a disappointing 24-32 Stanford team. A USA Baseball 16U alumnus (2010), the Florida prep product was expected to anchor Stanford's rotation this spring after a strong showing in the Cape Cod League last summer and a big finish for the Cardinal's 2014 super regional squad. Brakeman pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief against Vanderbilt in last year's super regional in one outing, and then made nine appearances (four starts) in the Cape, posting a 47-7 strikeout-walk ratio in 33 innings. In the Cape, Brakeman was electric, with a fastball that peaked in the 93-95 mph range and a tight slider that was average to above-average. His changeup was his money pitch, with sink and run helping it be a plus pitch that missed bats. Brakeman’s whole arsenal lacked crispness and was down overall this spring, though, with his fastball sitting 87-91 mph. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Brakeman may not have the size or durability to start, but his lengthy track record should still get him drafted high if he proves signable.

The Stanford right-hander has plenty of international baseball experience under his belt, as he was named the Most Valuable Pitcher at the WWBA World Championship and was a member of USA Baseball’s 16U National Team that won a gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Games. At Stanford, he led the team in innings among relievers as a sophomore last year and was 2-4 with a 2.91 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 52 2/3 innings through nine starts this season.

17 (501): @RedSox select Grand Canyon University 2B Chad De La Guerra. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2015/drafttracker.jsp#ft=team&fv=bos …  #MLBDraft

#35 in AZ according to BA.

Player of the Year: Chad De La Guerra, 2b, Grand Canyon. A 5-foot-10, 190-pound middle infielder, De La Guerra packs some deceptive punch. He hit .373/.433/.555 with six home runs and 49 RBIs in his junior year at Grand Canyon, swiping 16 bases in 16 attempts. He led the WAC in average and ranked second in hits, RBIs and slugging percentage.

At the 2015 World Showcase (per Perfect Game):

James Nelson is a 2015 SS/2B with a 6-2 190 lb. frame from Stone Mountain, GA who attends Redan HS. Tall, highly athletic, lean build. Looks the part playing up the middle. Shows plus speed. Ran a 6.70 60 yard dash. Shows flashy actions on the infields and hands work very well. Makes the plays consistently and shows lateral agility. Has a big arm and makes consistent throws across. Bats right-handed, works from an upright setup and uses a leg kick trigger. Hits hard line drives to his pull side and knows how to lift the ball. Very good student. Named to Top Prospect list.

Lots of sad faces from Gamecock fans here due to Logan Allen signing.  In the Columbia paper pre-draft:

Holbrook expects to lose Neidert. He’s hoping it balances out with another coveted prospect, 6-foot-3 lefty Logan Allen, keeping his commitment.
“He’s one we’re trying very hard to keep,” Holbrook said. “He’s a critical part of our class.”
Allen could be the answer to who replaces Wynkoop. From North Carolina by way of Florida’s IMG Academy, Allen has dominated his competition.

4 pitches, touches 93.

Another pre-draft fun nugget from Logan:

My favorite player is a guy named Jon Lester, he plays for the Chicago Cubs," Allen told HNGN in an exclusive interview. "He's always been my favorite. He's definitely a guy I look up to and a pitcher I want to be like."

Back in 2002, Lester, standing at 6' 2", 190 lbs., had already committed to Arizona State University, but the Boston Red Sox swooped in when the time was right. After taking him 57th overall (16th in the second round), Boston offered Lester a $1 million signing bonus and he forwent college to begin his career in the Red Sox's farm system.

Allen, standing at 6' 3", 200 lbs., committed to the University of South Carolina, but if he gets taken in a favorable spot in this year's draft he's likely to forgo his college years and begin his career as a professional baseball player. In fact, the Red Sox even see a little Lester in Allen ... actually, maybe a lot.

"The Red Sox are one of the teams talking to me now and they don't call me by my name - they always call me Lester," he said.

"We both even kind of have the same face. When I wore a hat at the East Coast Pro Showcase a lot of the guys were making jokes because I literally looked just like him."

In another somewhat Lester related draft pick, the Sox drafted RHP Clate Schmidt out of Clemson in the 32nd round. He was drafted on the same day he began cancer treatment. He is a junior and expected to return to school.

Schmidt was diagnosed a week ago with nodular sclerosis, a treatable form of Hodkin’s lymphoma. The disease is highly curable, commonly found in 20-year-olds, and not expected to interfere with Schmidt’s baseball career.

More info on Logan Allen.

Allen made the Louisville Slugger team as a second-team selection. Allen is a left-handed pitcher who played his junior and senior seasons for the IMG Academy out of Bradenton (Fla.).
The University of South Carolina recruit has said he is forgoing college to play professionally in the Boston Red Sox organization. Allen was taken in the eighth round (with the 231st overall pick) in last week's major league draft.
Allen said that he and Boston verbally agreed to a signing bonus between $725,000 and $750,000 prior to his selection. The deal, which has not yet been finalized, will also include money to supplement Allen's college education.
At the invitation of the club, Allen is flying to Boston for Monday's game between the Red Sox and Atlanta Braves.

Jeez, this kid might change his mind about playing for the Red Sox if he actually witnesses the current team in person.
