7 losses in a row - yikes.  They're down to .500.

Against the Marlins, the pitching let them down, as the offense was scoring runs.  But in the last 4 games, the Giants have scored a total of 5 runs.

Losing Aoki and Pence, with Pagan dealing with a severely injured knee, is too much for the offense to bear.

Just got home from the annual San Francisco trip which includes a couple Giant games.  Disclaimer; the wife's favorite team is the Giants.

Saw the last two against the Phailing Phils.  The kid, Matt Duffy is a player!  Highlight me the kid who snagged a foul bout on Sunday sitting in the front row by the Phils dugout and saved his dad's face.

For my money, AT & T park is the finest baseball stadium in America and I have been to a lot of them.

Giants backup C Andrew Susac sprained his thumb sliding head first into 3B on a triple. He was placed on the DL and Hector Sanchez was called up. An MRI was scheduled for yesterday. No word yet on the results. This is a huge blow for the team as it allowed Posey to 1B and Belt to LF without too much of an offensive dropoff. Hector Sanchez isn't great offensively or defensively.

Also, Nori Aoki should be back sometime around the end of the month.

Sidenote: I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to AT&T, Mauidano!

Aoki's back tonight, so this is the first time the Giants have played with their expected starting unit all year.  And it's just in time -- check out their schedule after this series against the Brewers:

3@TEX
3@ATL
3@CHC
2vHOU
4vWAS
3@STL
4@PIT
3vCHC
3vSTL
3@LAD

That is just a murderous month-plus of baseball.

Yeah, I'm hoping they can emerge from August at least close to a playoff spot. I think a lot depends on what Evans does before the end of this week. They need a starter in the worst way. After Bumgarner and Heston, it gets shaky at best.

Panik to the DL (back) and Pagan out tonight (and perhaps more) with two bad knees.  This is an inopportune time for these guys to start breaking down, with the Dodgers and Cubs heating up.  It's going to be a tough run to the playoffs...

Eesh.  Four-game sweep at the hands of the Cubbies.  The shame of it is that they are playing close games for the most part, but just can't get the big timely hit.

3-7 on their month+ from hell.

Next up:  2 v. the struggling Astros and 4 v. the struggling Nats, all at home.

After a glorious weekend sweep of the Nats, the Gigantes started a 7 game roadie v. St. Louis and Pittsburgh with:

(1) a tough-luck loss;
(2) in which Pence apparently hurt his oblique; and
(3) before which it was announced that Mike Leake is not ready to pitch yet.

The obstacles to making the playoffs continue to mount...

Walked across King Street with Sabean yesterday. Polite nod.

The hellacious stretch is almost over.  MadBum came up huge -- again -- and the Giants remain 2.5 out.

Now Chicago goes to LA with Lester and Arrieta pitching games 2 and 3 of that series while the Cards come to SF.  I don't think it's unreasonable to expect both the Giants and LA to go 1-2, meaning that the LAD-Giants series next week could start with the Giants able to take the division lead with a sweep.

The Giants desperately need to get healthy.  Duffy is playing through a sprained ankle, Affeldt (addition by subtraction?) is on the DL after hurting his knee playing with his kids, Pence, Panik and Pagan are still out, Aoki apparently left today's game, etc., etc.  Bochy was considering starting Posey at THIRD today if Duffy couldn't go.  Honestly, the fact that they are still within shouting distance of LA is a minor miracle.

Cardinals looked pretty pathetic on Saturday night against Ian Kennedy and the Padres pen. I enjoyed rooting with Pads fans a lot at that one. But they bounced back to win four straight now. Their offense isn't much with Holliday and Adams out. Giants are banged up too, as you say, but they may have found another young infielder that can hit, Kelby Tomlinson (grand slam today). For a team that wasn't supposed to have a farm system last year, they come up with Panik, Duffy and Tomlinson. Duffy is like the anti-Panda...skinny, excellent range at third, fast, and hits line drives and home runs to all fields. Panda had been hitting a bit better lately though.

Lester let the Giants down on Saturday, but thanks to Arrieta they go into LA 3.5 down to face a Dodgers team that's been no-hit twice in a month.

The payoff for the horrific schedule they just endured is that the Giants play the NL West the rest of the way aside from 3 against the Reds at home and 3 against the A's "on the road" -- I can't even fathom the extent to which Giants fans will outnumber A's fans at the Coliseum Sept. 25-27 if the Giants are still in contention.

The Dodgers' schedule is similar, except that the NL Central team they play is the Pirates, and the AL West team they play is the Angels.

If they can get Panik, Crawford and Pence back for the stretch run, I like their chances.

By the way, there was a pretty sobering article about Lincecum out today that makes it sound like he is done for this year and possibly longer.
