2015 San Francisco Giants: These laurels look pretty comfortable

Chris Heston opened the road trip with a complete game 2-hitter in Houston giving the GIants an 8-1 victory. The movement Heston is getting on his 2-seamer is unreal. It looks like a lefty slider. After Heston's bad start against the Padres, Rags wanted Heston to throw inside more to RHB. Seems to have worked...

Today is Hudson vs. Oberholtzer.

Giants drop the 2nd game in the 2-game series 4-3 to get a split. They were actually leading 3-1 at one point and Bochy ran Hudson out 1 inning too long after it was clear he was struggling to get through the 5th.

Off to Cincy.

How was Heston's curveball? I don't get to see every game for obvious reasons (and I usually know the score when I do watch, so I'm not gonna sit there and watch a loss unless I really have to), but I saw him pitch a few weeks and was impressed by his curve. Keith Law was talking about how he's pessimistic on Heston because he's basically two seamer, two seamer, two seamer, and to see his secondary pitch working pretty well was encouraging. If can turn that into a thing, he's got a chance to be a cromulent fourth starter.

Also, one of the great disappointments of my life was missing out on meeting Monte Irvin. He was going to come to the UK for the SABR UK general meeting, as he wanted to revisit some of the towns where he served during the war. He cancelled due to a health issue a few weeks before he was supposed to come over. A real shame.

The break on Heston's curve was really sharp and really late. And his command of everything that he was throwing was really good. It seems like Posey did a good job of reading the hitters and using Heston's stuff to max benefit. Rooks don't get to shake Buster off. =)

Also, when Baer and Bobby Evans were presenting Monte Irvin with his ring, Baer asked him if he ever got a chance to meet President Obama. Irvin said no but that he always wanted to. Baer immediately invited Irvin to accompany the team when they visit the White House later this year. How great is that?

Hunter Pence comes off the DL and goes 2-3 with 3 R.  Remarkable.

They are now a game above .500, good for second in the West.

Welcome back Hunter Pence. 2-5 today with a homer and 2 runs scored. Brandon Belt also homered for the 3rd straight game as the Giants take the 4-game series 3-1. They finish the road trip 4-2. Heston looked really bad today. He was missing up and getting hit hard.

Day off tomorrow and then a 3 game set with the Dodgers.

Giants take the first 2 games of the Dodgers series, both by shutout. With the series won, today is a day game and a travel day so Bochy went with a weird lineup for the finale. Brandon Crawford has the day off. It doesn't feel like anyone has noticed, but he has been on a ridiculous tear.

Giants sweep the Dodgers. All 3 games were shutouts. Madison Bumgarner homered off of Clayton Kershaw. Half of the Giants 14 wins this month have been by shutout. Dogs and cats sleeping together...

Now off to Colorado for 4 games. That place is a nightmare and the Giants could totally look like crap in this series.

Giants DFA'd Ishikawa today.

It is remarkable to me that the Giants can continue to turn passable minor leaguers into excellent major leaguers.  Baseball America had Panik as the Giants' ninth-best prospect in 2013.  Matt Duffy was ranked 9th last year.  Now both guys are solid starters for a contending team.

The Giants are not messing around are they?  They "cut" two pretty popular guys. Of course Ishikawa was a non factor this year so that was inevitable I suppose.  They are really gonna make a run.  Outside of yesterday, pitching has been really strong.  Looking forward to seeing them in one of the great Parks in baseball in July, AT&T.

The Giants split a 4-game series in Colorado. That place is awful so I consider a split a victory. Each of the 4 games were delayed by weather.

They got into Milwaukee late and took the 1st game 8-4. Lincecum looked bad but the offense picked him up.

With Duffy now named the the starting 3B, the entire Giants infield is homegrown and under the age of 30.

Homers by Pence, Duffy and Belt lead the Giants to a 6-3 win over the Brewers in the 2nd game.

Day game today (Vogelsong vs. Fiers) and then back home for 4 against the Braves.

Giants lose the last two games to split the series. The last loss was particularly painful as Santiago Casilla blew a 2-run lead in the 9th and Brandon Crawford booted what would have been a game ending double play. Pirates in town next for 3. The Giants are a half game back of the Dodgers now.

Yipes - a three-game sweep of the Giants at home by the Buccos.  Gerrit Cole was nails in Game 1, so a decent game from Vogelsong was wasted.  Heston didn't have it in the second game, and then Hudson pitched only well enough to lose and Hunter Strickland had a bad outing in game 3.

Pretty good article today in the Chron:

The Giants completed one-third of their schedule Tuesday night. Even with that significant chunk of games recorded, they have not offered a clear picture of who they are.
They are not the first San Francisco team to have an eight-game win streak and eight-game losing streak in the same season. The 2000 and 2007 teams did, too, but only the 2015 model had one of each before Memorial Day.
The Giants followed their latest win streak, a five-gamer, with a losing streak that reached four after their 7-4 loss to a Pirates team that has had its way with the Giants the past few years, except for that one teensy, weensy game in Pittsburgh in October.
The Giants are 30-24. Multiply that by three and you have a 90-72 season. But the disparity between the good Giants and bad Giants makes that math risky.
The 21-9 May that provided most of the wins was built on a combination of shutdown pitching (particularly at home) and clutch-hitting consistency that would be difficult for any team to maintain.
Already, the pitching is trending downward, even if it has been competitive.

On to the White House!

Yep, brutal series against the Bucs. Worst part about it is the Giants had leads in all 3. They usually win those types of games.

Giants are visiting the White House today. As I mentioned earlier, the team is taking along Monte Irvin because he said he wanted to meet the president. Also making the trip will be Michael Morse who I guess I guess is available because the Marlins put him on the DL.

White House visit done and only having Bochy manage the All Star Game is left on list of the spoils of winning the World Series last year.

The Giants are playing the Phillies this weekend and Pence is not in the lineup for game 1. This has to be injury-related because that guy never takes a day off. No word from the team as to why he is sitting though.

Brandon Crawford is now .293/.366/.505 on the season with 8 homers and an OPS+ of 145. He has already been worth 2.3 WAR this year. Only Peralta has been as good offensively at the SS position in the NL this year.

Giants lose the final game in Philly but take the series 2-1. With the Dodgers loss to the Cards, the Giants remain a half game back. They are off today and will play the Mets on Tuesday.

This will be the first draft in a long time without Brian Sabean as GM of the Giants. It will be interesting to see how the new regime operates. The Giants pick 18th, 31st and 61st today.

The answer to this question (at least for day 1) is that the team's draft was very much like all their others. The Giants looked for Cape Cod League standouts like they usually do.

Phil Bickford was their first pick (and is apparently a stoner so he'll fit right in). He was taken 10th overall by Toronto last year and didn't sign.
Chris Shaw (who I am nicknaming George Bernard whether he likes it or not) led the Cape league in homers
Andrew Suarez LHP from the Univ of Miami who saw his velocity drop recently.

Kind of a "meh" day. But as always, it is hard to judge Giants drafts early on. I guess that applies to all teams usually.

I'm throwing out the start in Colorado because that place is a nightmare. However, Heston's start yesterday was pretty bad; even if he did get blooped and seeing-eye groundered to death. He wasn't missing bats and 3 walks in 5 IP at AT&T is horrid. Prior to yesterday's game, Heston had an excellent start against the Angels. A little inconsistency is to be expected in his first full season in the majors.
Heston goes 3.2 IP, 5 ER v the Buccos, then backs it up with a no-no. A little inconsistency, indeed.

It will be very interesting to see who gets kicked from the rotation when Peavy comes back. That will be a day-to-day decision, I think. How do you take Vogey out of the rotation? But how do you take Heston out, too?

Giants lose the last game and take the series 2-1. They went 4-2 on the roadtrip. Kinda glad they lost early. They have a game tomorrow in San Francisco. Extra innings before a cross country flight is the worst.

Bochy still does some old school stuff that drives me up a wall. Lincecum was gassed in the 4th and he was giving up line drives that happened to be finding gloves. He managed to escape with a 2-1 lead and was due to leadoff the top of the 5th. Bochy let him hit because you gotta get through 5 inning to qualify for the win and Bochy is all about that. Lincecum grounded out and didn't make it out of the bottom of the 5th after coughing up the lead.

Remember when the Giants were a bunch of big ol' meanie-pants for having the nerve to ask Pablo to keep his weight under control? :buddy:

I actually like Pablo. I still hope he ends up being worth the contract the Sox gave him. I really thought he would rake all this year just to prove the doubters wrong. I mean, it is still only June but it doesn't look good right now...

The booing of Pablo has begun in Boston.  I think things are likely to get worse before they get better.

The Mets really screwed the Giants.  I know that they're professionals, etc., etc, but I don't think they'd have been no-hit for so many innings by Chase Anderson on a full night of sleep.  For those that don't know, the Mets insisted that last night's game be a night game despite the fact that the Giants had to fly across country and play today.  And the only reason for it by the Mets was for ONE GAME of ticket sales.  Such b.s.

Swept at the hands of the Diamondbacks. They looked listless and then horrid. That is 8 straight losses at home. Oy.

I gave up trying to figure this team out a few weeks ago. World beaters one week and a bunch of brainless clowns the next.

It really is remarkable.  Fortunately, their pitching has generally been good to great, so the problem (as always) is getting timely hitting and not giving away bases.  With Pence down and Belt scuffling, it's tough to score.

Also, I understand that he's a sunk cost, but I think I've seen enough of Casey McGahee at this point.  He is horrendous.  2 more GIDP yesterday.

Edit:  Oy.  Five losses in a row.  They really need Pence to get back.

Duffy hit his sixth HR today.  Before this year, he had his 13 HR in his entire collegiate and pro careers.  Unreal.

Duffy played college baseball at Long Beach State University from 2010 to 2012. During his 2010 season at Long Beach State, Duffy played in 30 games, starting 20 of them, averaged .244, had 86 at bats, 8 runs, 21 hits, and 7 RBI. In the 2011 season, Duffy played in 55 games, started 54 of them, averaged .266, had 214 at bats, 22 runs, 57 hits, and 31 RBI. In those two seasons at Long Beach State, Duffy played in 85 games, started 74 of them, averaged .260, had 300 at bats, 30 runs, 78 hits, and 38 RBI.[4] In 501 college at bats, Matt Duffy hit .253 and had an on-base percentage of .305. Over those three seasons, Duffy recorded zero home runs, sixteen doubles, and one triple. He was kept on the team because of his defensive abilities.[5] He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 18th round (568th overall) of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.[6]
Minor leagues
In 2012, Duffy began his professional baseball career playing for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League, hitting .247 in 182 at bats.[7] In 2013, Duffy played for the Augusta GreenJackets of the Class A South Atlantic League and the San Jose Giants of the Class A-Advanced California League.[2] In Augusta, he hit .307 with a 45/41 walk to strikeout ratio in 287 at bats, and in San Jose, Duffy hit .292 in 106 at bats.[5] Duffy began 2014 with the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Double-A Eastern League.[7]
In his minor league career, Duffy played in 248 games and recorded 942 at bats. He scored 149 runs and 286 hits. Duffy hit 13 home runs and had 135 runs batted in. He was walked 120 times and struck out 145 times. Duffy also stole 55 bases. In the minors, Duffy recorded an average of .304 and an on-base percentage of .387. [8]

He's listed at 6'2, 170 by BBREF but I heard Bochy say he was 165 soaking wet. Maybe he weighed 140 in college? He puts a good swing on it and hits the ball pretty hard, like their other new infielder from last year, Joe Panik. If those two keep it up, what a couple of finds.

MadBum just lost a no-hitter when a grounder hit something on the infield, then lost the game because Pagan alligator-armed a catchable ball with Maxwell steaming toward him from RF.  Rough day.

Three things:

(1)  Aoki got HBP in the foot today and is day-to-day, so Blanco got back just in time.
(2)  It sounds like Peavy has one rehab start and Cain has two left.  As GG said some time ago, it'll be very interesting to see how they handle this.  I like the idea of Hudson taking a two-week rest with the Hellenic flu when Peavy comes back in an effort to have him fresher late in the year, but I REALLY wonder how many quality innings Peavy has left.
(3)  Pence may not be back until the ASB.  I'm pretty disappointed and surprised the Giants did not handle his rehab better to try to avoid this issue, which sounds like it stemmed directly from the muscles in his wrist being too weak to handle his workload when he came back (which I think means he came back too fast).  I'm glad they're taking their time with his return now.

Edit:  Cain went 6.2 IP, 5H, 2ER, 0 BB, 6K tonight.  I think they'll have him do another rehab start just to be sure he's 100% back, but it looks like they're going to have a serious logjam in terms of starting pitching (a problem that virtually always solves itself).

Bochy said no decisions have been made yet, but there appears to be a rough framework. One option would be to put a veteran on the disabled list, and behind closed doors, the Giants are leaning that way with Tim Hudson, the 39-year-old with a 4.52 ERA. Bochy would say only that “we’ve got a couple of guys going out there and they’ve been beat up and they’re giving us all they have.”
Bochy wouldn’t commit to any firm plans, even saying they haven't ruled out a six-man rotation, but Madison Bumgarner is locked in as the ace and Matt Cain and Jake Peavy will return as starters. The Giants do not want to move Chris Heston, either, which would — if Hudson hits the DL — leave Ryan Vogelsong and Lincecum as bullpen candidates.

Link

Given the way things are going, I'd assume Lincecum goes on the DL when Peavy comes back, then gets moved to the bullpen when Cain comes back, with Hudson hitting the DL.  What happens when Hudson comes back will be interesting.

This is a very Tale of Two Cities team this season. I think they can win the division, especially because they have been so dominant against the Dodgers so far. However, they need to get into a steady rhythm and quit this whole long-win-streak/long-losing-streak pattern. So odd.

This is very curious, the rotation. There's seven people, maybe even eight, who could reasonably be asked to start for the rest of the season. And six or seven of them appear to be tossups on any given night. Vogey, Hudson, Heston and Lincecum can all look awful or spectacular, sometimes within the span of two starts. I'd imagine Cain, assuming he really is healthy, will return to form, but Peavy is anybody's guess.

I do suspect there will be some suspect DL action going down soon, and Lincecum looks like the biggest target. However, moving Vogelsong to the bullpen might be the most likely move because it ruffles the least amount of feathers. Not a great basis for a decision, but the thinking might be that with the tenuous nature of the rest of the rotation, it won't be a long bullpen stint.

Aoki with a broken leg. Pence still having issues from a broken arm. A pending rotation shakeup. Bumgarner pitching his ass off and getting hosed by his manager and the offense.

What did you object to last night?  Leaving MadBum in to bat in the bottom 7th and then pitch in the top 8th?  I initially felt the same way, but giving MadBum the 8th didn't seem outrageous to me given how few stressful innings he'd had.

I do think their offense is going to need some help, and Ishikawa is unlikely to provide it.  I'll be curious to see if they can find a palatable move that can get them over the hump.  Daniel Nava is currently taking BP, so he's getting close to healthy.  I can't imagine the Sox would demand too much for him, and he might benefit from a change of scenery.

My main quibble wasn't that he started the 8th, but that Bochy didn't do anything until the lead was gone. Bumgarner singled and ran the bases in the bottom of the 7th. When he walked the leadoff guy in the 8th (after issuing no walks up to that point) it should have been a clue that he was tired. Instead, walk, double, double, game tied. I may have cursed at my TV while that was going on.

I was hoping the Giants would call up Mac Williamson. I am forever grateful to Travis Ishikawa, but I'd rather not play Belt out of position; and Ishikawa isn't really an outfielder either.

Good God Jeremy Affeldt just got torched.  0 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 1 BB.  Yikes.

Meanwhile, all the offense needed to wake up was for everyone to get hurt.  4 triples today for the first time since 1960.  They absolutely crushed James Shields.

Hmm...they've completely lost the plot in the 8th.  Affeldt melted down, Lopez gave up a single, Romo (who appears to still be having trouble with his knee that forced him out of the game a couple of games ago) can't get anyone out, Pagan misplayed 2 balls, and suddenly it's 9-8 with two outs in the 8th after the inning started out 9-2.  And they got out of it.  Now 9-8 going into the bottom of the 8th...

Matt Duffy needs a single to hit for the cycle. Guaranteed at least one more AB.

And he hits one off the first baseman's glove, ball goes foul and ump calls it foul. Being challenged because it looked like the first baseman touched it in fair territory. If they call it fair, could be a single or a double though. Suspence!

Edit again. Called fair, then Duffy hits into a double play. Umps chickened out, IMO. Or, it was one of those "don't reverse the decision on the field because not enough evidence to overturn."

Giants get swept by the Fish. Last night's loss was particularly demoralizing, as Casilla gave up a 3-run walk off. Casilla has looked off for a couple of outings now.

Giants are 1.5 out of the WC and 3 behind LA. I expect they are going to scuffle until the ASB and make a big run once everyone is healthy.

Giants have another move to make but have not announced it yet. LHP Josh Osich is with the team and is not currently on the 40-man. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Edit: and what a shoe it was! Brett Bochy DFA'd.
