Not really imo. When you are playing the long game, sometimes taking the classy path pays better long term dividends then sweating some small print quality or lottery ticket return built around a rather shortsighted "something now is obviously better then nothing" principle. Which was realistically going to be the case there, regardless where the current state of free agent pitching resided at.

Say what you want about Theo (and I still don't forgive him for Crawford) but the guy has always been a pretty good bet to take care of his own. I'd of expected DD to do the same thing with Buchholz in the event he had no plans to slot him into our 2017 rotation.

Isn't the more likely explanation that the late season "elbow tightness" is something real and they don't care to pay an extra 10 million for him to spend the year in rehab?

I think that possibility combined with his age, salary, and late season decline was enough to warrant Theo deciding to go in a different direction. Plus hurt the chance to begin with that any team was going to give up much in terms of asset value to take the 1 year flyer.

As far as why Theo did it, here is his own quote on the matter:

“The intent was never to exercise the option and then trade Jason, so we will not consider that path,” said Epstein. “Instead, Jason will have the opportunity to enter free agency coming off an outstanding season and the ability to choose his next club.”

Heyman reporting Colon agreed to a deal. I don't think any AL team would be dumb enough. Would they?

EDIT: It's the Braves

surprised the Mets didn't give him the Wakefield treatment.
$12.5 mil from the Braves? Are 40 yo SP the new market inefficiency?

Colon had 191.2 IP and an ERA+ of 120 last year and has had the lowest walk rate in the league two years in a row. 12.5 mil on a one year deal for a team with tons of payroll room like Atlanta is a no-brainer .

Braves had the 3rd worst record last year and are in rebuild mode. Why spend $20 on two old pitchers to hopefully go from awful to mediocre?

New stadium, I guess. They have to have some product to get people to show up.

85 wins gets you in the WC race. And if it doesn't work out, maybe you have a nice trade chip in July.

Well if either are pitching well they can always flip them at the deadline for a lotto ticket

Maybe it's a bridge rotation, but the Braves were (barely) over .500 in the second half. Veteran stability isn't the worst way to go when you needs innings eaten

Yeah, I'm more upset about losing Colon than I will be about Cespedes, to be honest. I can understand it (12.5 million is a lot for a 44 year old pitcher), but still.

Thank god he signed with an NL team so we can still watch him hit

Hellickson takes the qualifying offer from PHI, so he is off the market.

mlbtr: White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has opted out of the remaining three years and $34MM on his guaranteed contract and will enter arbitration for his remaining three years of club control, reports Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago (via Twitter). Abreu originally signed a six-year, $68MM contract with the ChiSox, but that contract allowed him to enter the arbitration process whenever he was deemed eligible.

The Padres announced tonight that outfielder Oswaldo Arcia has been designated for assignment.

We'll call that move Arcia-1

The White Sox are willing to trade anyone with less than 4 years of control.

The could mean that Sale is available and Quintana is not.
