First look at GS against San Antonio. Jonathan Simmons just played super well and SA is up 11 after one. Durant looks really good though.

Reminds me of the Celtics taking out the Heat opening night in 2010. Proud team, probably eclipsed in the long run, but having none of a coronation.

Dubs looked the same way they did in their losses that season, too many turnovers and low percentage shots that prevent them from getting into a good consistent flow on offense. On defense the Spurs are just an excellent offensive team, smart ball handlers, guys always cutting, shooters in the right place and tonight they have run iso offense through both Kawhi and Aldridge.

I didn't understand why some people were predicting a down year for San Antonio; yes they lost Duncan but this is still a dangerous team with a master running it. I don't think a loss means that much to GS in the long run; they are still going to be an absolute force; but they are not going to steamroll the West like many pundits believed.

The Spurs shot 48% from the field and 50% from deep while Golden State shot 46.5% and 21.2%. The Spurs actually had more turnovers than the Warriors but most of those were in garbage time. In short, unless the Warriors are off to a historically bad 3P shooting season while the Spurs are going to hit half their shots from deep with Jonathon Simmons nailing 60% from behind the arc all season, this is your classic small sample size game.

Take aways from one game are kind of hot takey though I agree GS will not "steamroll" the West. Aside from that, I am so, so happy the NBA is back.

It will be interesting looking at the shots people are taking. GSW took 85 shots last night. Durant had 18, Curry had 18, Green had 14, and Thompson had 13. Ian Clark had 8 (presumably in garbage time). That left 14 shots for the 6 other people who took shots.

Thompson's FGAs over the last four years: 14.7, 15.5, 16.9, and 17.3 (last year).

According to Sir Charles, Klay is the best all-around player on that team.

If you take last night's results and extrapolate over the course of an 82 game season, the Warriors are primed to set records in futility. Thus, time to consider my dream trade of Bradley/2017 Brooklyn pick for Thompson. Get it done, Theo.

Klay is the player most affected by Durant imo as he morphs into a Ray Allen-like role in Boston which at this stage of his career is very possible to frustrate the living hell out of him. His star is ready to blossom instead he has a minor role in the offense. Kerr will have his hands full.

The good thing is that the greater than 0% chance of an internal implosion coupled with Durant's ability to leave this summer isn't something Celtics fans should completely ignore. Long shot but worth keeping an eye on.

That's what she said.
In the other game Joe Johnson looked like the elder statesman posting up and owning Dame Lillard, who was nuts on offense. He could average 29 this year.

Rodney Hood looked awesome too. Remember when Danny drafted our 15th man instead of him?

And Kawhi going 15/15 from the line was great to see too. He just keeps getting better. And his old trade partner, George Hill, looked in control in PDX for Utah. The Jazz looked much better than last year, and Favors and Hayward were out.

Man I'm happy the NBA is back!

George Hill is hugely underrated. He's going to improve Utah a lot. Looking forward to that team at full strength.

Yea, I can't say I watched a ton of Pacers ball in the past, but it seemed that Hill was more in a distributor role, last night he looked like a scorer.

I just hope he dyes his hair again before they play Pop and the Spurs.

Considering the GS guys will hurt each other and LeBron might be on cruise control, Dame is a terrific MVP dark horse.

Steve Kerr picked Dame to be MVP this year so he agrees.

Regarding Klay Thompson, you guys may be right that he suffers from fewer shots this season and there is no question he is a great scorer from the field. That said, he is very streaky and though he has improved over his career, he stll lacks athleticism to consistently finish around the rim, especially in traffic. I wonder how he would do outside of Golden State's system offensively. His defense, on the other hand, is great.

I don't things are going to be that down statistically for Curry/Durant/Klay. Mainly because they are such good percentage shooters that they don't need a ton of looks to put up 20-30 points a night. What they lose in FGA they will recoup somewhat in better looks. I don't think they will all be at their normal per game averages, but I'd be surprised if Klay scored under 18 ppg.

Embiid looks good.
If he stays healthy Sixer fans are gonna end up loving this pick.

I've watched this game for 3 possessions down the stretch and saw 4 mental errors by the Sixers. Saric with a quick deep 3 outside of the offense, Sergio closing out on a non-shooter forcing Embiid to pick up his 5th, nobody boxing out the ft shooter, and Henderson with a quick 3 before they got into the offense.

Henderson seems to have a low basketball IQ.

The Nets will win more games than the Lakers, Sixers, Magic, and the Suns.

LA and Houston playing a 1980s shootout. Hardens going to end up with like a 55-15-18.

Larry nailed that pick. Nice night for Anthony Davis:

50/16/5 with 7 steals and 4 blocks...
In a loss to Denver. Is Ryan Grigson pulling double duty surrounding the brow with talent?

He'll never play with a legit 2nd option...until he teams up with Jaylen Brown and Harry Giles in 2020.

What a great day for the NBA, I mean Giannis slapped up a 31-9-5- while playing point forward and it is like the 10th most exciting thing to happen today.

They haven't done a great job, but there were extenuating circumstances tonight.

Their PG and 2nd best player is Jrue Holliday who is missing part of the season because his wife had a baby then surgery on a brain tumor.

Tyreke Evans is out recovering from Knee surgery as is Quincy Pondexter.

So it's not a great roster to start with but 2 of their 4 best players and basically all of their shot creators are out.
They made nice signings this summer on the whole.

It really is amazing how much better a product the NBA has developed over time. Rule changes and young talent have transformed the game and its so different from 10 years ago let alone 20.

There are some game changing talents around, giannis (and potentially Simmons similarly), brow, Kat, embiid etc as unicorns. So many good smart coaches. Growth of analysis and so on. Good times.

Really, the only thing that's missing is the relevance of the regular season (which could be helped if it was shortened to ~ 66 games or so) and more parity at the contender level (but even that has its benefits in allowing postseason rivalries to develop).

The league also has smart leadership at the top.

This article talks about how the league's growth will depend on making the games shorter by fixing the timeout situation in the last few minutes.

Blake looks like his old self with an added average 3pt shot. Clipps look ready for another good regular season and post season flame out.
