I just wanted a place to talk about this (and I apologize for not being funny enough to come up with a good thread title). Suggestions welcome.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/03/02/flacco-becomes-highest-paid-player-under-either-standard/

More than ever, I think the Ravens really need to land a top player in this years draft. They have the 6th pick of the upcoming draft and they have the highest paid player in the league at quarterback (even if Brees eclipses that mark soon). The top four positions in salary are quarterback, wide receiver, left tackle and defensive end. I would imagine that the best bet to make Flacco's contract work, would be to save money in other areas. With a draft pick in the top ten, this is their best chance to land a difference maker at a bargain salary.

So this guy from a Ravens blog (Russell Street report) pretty much nailed it in January: http://russellstreetreport.com/2016/01/14/baltimore-ravens-salary-cap/joe-flacco-cmon-down/. I guess the reasoning is that if the deal needs to beat Rodgers new money extension in 2013 and it is going to be for three years, it's going to be 3 years/$66.Xmm and all that is left to decide is how the bonuses are going to be structured.

I don't know if $6-$9mm in cap room is really going to vault the Ravens from pretender to contender and if I were running things, I would have at least waited to see how the draft shook out but I guess coming off a 5-11 season, the powers to be wanted to give themselves every chance to have a deep playoff run. And given the dearth of proven QBs, it's probably not going to be an outrageous contract in a couple of year.

But it sure is expensive.

And the Ravens do have a recent history of whiffing on contracts for a variety of reasons (some of them outside of their control): Pitta, Ray Rice, Monroe, and Webb.

I've said this before, but I truly wonder how much of this entire mess could have been avoided if Brady didn't step out of character and suggest that the Ravens should read the rulebook.

Ravens propose that helmets be updated with flashing beacons that are turned on when the offensive player is an eligible receiver.

Victim shaming - is that the correct term?

What's next, are players going to be required to have pinnies that indicate if they are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th option too?

The extent to which this got into the Ravens' heads is amazing. I mean they spend time thinking about this shit instead of scouting or planning for the season. All BB has to do is say "Wait until you see what we cam up with this time" to Harbaugh before the game starts and his head will explode.

Why is this a mess exactly? Or is that from the Ravens' perspective?

I mean the entire DFG mess.

It's been my tinfoil-hat theory that Brady's offhand comment pissed off the Ravens, which led to the K-ball story being shared with the Colts special teams personnel and then up the chain of command which led to the PSI witch hunt which led to the axis of evil (irsay-grigson-kensil) putting their master plan into action.

It's my tinfoil hat, and i wear it proudly

@E5 Yaz, that's as good a tinfoil hat theory as any. But Brady wasn't really stepping out of character -- he was being pushed by the media as to whether it was an "illegal" play (I can't find the video online but I'm pretty sure Harbaugh didn't go that far and had only called it "deceptive"). To which he replied, "Maybe those guys gotta study the rule book and figure it out. We obviously knew what we were doing and we made some pretty important plays. It was a real good weapon for us. Maybe we'll have something in store next week."

If Harbaugh really was upset about this and dropped a dime on the Pats as a retaliation, then he was super thin-skinned about it. But putting that aside, I'm pretty sure that the media had made Harbaugh seem even more unhinged about it all than he was -- and that was what Brady was responding to.

I read that last night and legit thought it was a joke. Like the Pats are responsible for all the Ravens' woes. I didn't realize it was serious.
Hope this guy is OK.
Same, thought this was an Onion type comment but thought frankly that it was probably too soon even for their twisted storylines...

Seems like the kind of kid you root for honestly from what I've read about him, sad to see anyone in situations like this. Riding near dark, in dark clothing, on a dirt bike without lighting probably isn't the best of choices but spring is here across most of the country and as long as it was registered for on road use and no drugs or alcohol were involved it's just another one of probably 1000 similar calls EMT's will respond to in the next few weeks. Unfortunate situation and a sad story all around, I hope the young man pulls through...

Not sure how you can go back to that moment and not remember how thoroughly unhinged Harbaugh actually was during the press conference, not to mention during the actual game...at the time, watching the press conference live, it was obvious that he was beyond livid and he essentially called out the Patriots for cheating. It was totally unprofessional in the moment, but so it goes with Harbaugh.

I haven't seen anything that definitively states he wasn't wearing a helmet but I hope for any of our community that ride bikes or motorcycles this affirms the importance of wearing one. Be smart and be safe: wear a goddamn helmet.

I'd also recommend not driving a bike around at night with no lights

It's easy to make fun of the "elite" folks, but the "not sures" might actually be insane. Flacco's 31; why haven't you made up your mind yet? Do you just like voting in polls?
This was a PPP poll so presumably it was a political poll to which PPP tagged on a fun question. Probably most of the not sures are those who have at best know Flacco as QB of the local team.

"Public Policy Polling" (their bolding) asks Marylanders if they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of crabcakes? Okay, GJ;GE.
PPP loves these jokey questions. It gets them press, like when they can report "Congress is less liked than cockroaches and traffic jams".

Fairly light for repeat offenders. They've been down this road before.

Shouldn't it at least be two weeks?

http://www.sbnation.com/2010/6/7/1505758/ravens-violate-ota-rules-forfeit-week

From 2010:
As a result, the Ravens will forfeit the final week of their off-season program (June 14-18, 2010). Ravens' players are not permitted to be at the facility on those days, but will be paid for the sessions. The Club cannot reschedule the canceled days.
"The NFL informed us of the situation, and the action they've taken is appropriate," G.M. Ozzie Newsome said. "We made a mistake, and it won't happen again. We'll complete our organized team activity days this week and then turn our focus to the start of training camp."

I love that their excuse both times is basically that they didn't understand the rules.
