Um new Brady succession plan. Duh. He even has experience replacing a legend
like the Seahawks issue and the multiple violations of the injury report by the Colts with Luck. Nothing will come of this, but what is Christmas Eve about other than wishing that huge box under the tree is your dirt bike you’ve always wanted and not a 1000 pair pack of righty whities from grandma.

I'm pretty sure he was healthy enough to be better than Brett Hundley was last night, so I could see some teams (e.g. Saints) complaining.

Multiple teams complained to the NFL last week that the Packers violated the rules regarding players who are eligible to be placed on injured reserve -- and that Green Bay should have to release quarterback Aaron Rodgers as a result, league sources told ESPN.

NFL rules stipulate that a player needs to have suffered a new injury that would sideline him at least six weeks to be placed on injured reserve. If that is not the case, the team is obligated to release the player once he is healthy.[/quote[

General NFL news and transactions in the thread please. Patriots persecution is completely unnecessary. Thanks.

Good edge rushers will create a pressure on 10% of pass plays. So yes its excellent. But 17 snaps is nothing.
How is passing play defined? Plays that ended in a pass, or passing situations like 3rd and long? Because Harrison was only put in on passing downs and probably was just told "rush the passer." A normal edge rusher has to think about the rush even if it ends up being a passing play.

Wonder if Arians has one more stop left in him. Had a great story – a solid coach and seems like a good guy. He got Palmer to near-elite performance and has had his best teams decimated by injuries including this year.

Would Denver be a potential landing spot if Joseph gets canned?

Indy would be a logical landing spot if the Colts move on from Pagano. Arians would probably need assurances in regard to Luck’s shoulder.

I mention Denver because Elway seems to like experienced coaches on the offensive side of the ball who’ve had some success (Kubiak but also Fox). Plus, Arians could be a QB whisperer for someone.

I think he got a little overrated by the media a few years ago, but Arians seems like a damn good coach by general league standards. He lost his starting QB and by far his top playmaker on offense in the pre-season. He lost Calais Campbell and Kevin Minter in free agency, and he had to start Blaine Gabbert in multiple games. I think they have done pretty well all things considered and find it hard to believe that Arizona is going to find a better coach.

He lost his starting QB.
Arians has always put together productive offenses, but an injured QB should be expected based on how long he has his QBs hold the football and love of empty formations. A return to the Colts is just as likely to re-land Luck on the IR as it is to get him in the Pro Bowl

Not that newsworthy except for diehards. Rick Trickett is not being retained by new FSU coach Willie Taggart. I wonder if he’d consider the NFL and working with B.B./Scar. They really value his opinions on OL.
I could see Scar hanging it up again after this season, that might be a nice transition plan

I think that understates it. Bill Belichick values his opinions on offensive linemen the way he values Nick Saban's opinions on defenders or running backs. The way he values Ernie Adams' opinions on challenges or opponent tendencies. I can't readily find his quotes on the guy or the stories about him visiting FSU for Trickett's advice, but you hear such stories about only a handful of other coaches.

Trickett himself is a huge Patriots fan. Back when we re-hired Scarnecchia, there was this tidbit:

At a coaching clinic a few years ago, Scarnecchia lectured on pass-blocking techniques, and the mental picture (he’s big on those) was easy to grasp.

“We emphasize having the thumbs up, and the fingers out,” he said. “If the thumbs go down, and the fingers are up, it causes the elbow to fly out. This gives the defender two handles to grab on to. You are never going to be in as strong of a position if you have your elbows pointing out. We use the butt of our hands as the primary contact point when we hit the defender. We use the mental picture that we want to hit them our hands from our chest to his chest.”

One of the coaches in the audience was Rick Trickett, Florida State’s line coach. He often calls Scarnecchia for advice at 5:30 a.m., and Scarnecchia always answers.

“He's one of the most thorough coaches I've ever been around,” says Trickett. “He's going to cover every angle. But he's not going to do it in a complicated way. He understands the game is not a complicated game and I don't think he makes it complicated. But he covers every scenario that may happen to the guys.”
That article is a great one on Scar, in general. But there is a lot of admiration between Trickett and the Pats coaching staff.

Rich Eisen coming in with the hottest take of the day:

“First thing Gettleman should do is suss out if there’s anything close to real in the rumor of a rift and go for the billion-to-one lottery shot: luring Belichick back to the Giants to finish his HOF career with the No. 2 overall pick, defense full of players, Odell and the Maras.”

Yes, but it also amuses me that he thinks Odell Beckham at the end of his rookie deal and looking for > AB $ would be a selling point for Belichick.

"let's see.... would it be more fun to run a team built around Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski the next coupla three years or so... or would I prefer a terrible roster and 'QB roulette'? Decisions decisions..."

All I know is, if BB wound up with the NYG that #2 overall pick wouldn't be something he'd have access to, what with it being in Foxboro with a bunch of other assets.

The arrogance of assuming that the Giants represent “coming home” because “Maras” is breathtaking.

It’s fun to think of the salary BB could ask and if anyone would pay if he weren’t under contract. Would an owner pay 100M a year?

The article linked below reports that his current deal is unknown for term of value. The highest paid head coach contracts are for 8-9M per year. However, Pete Carroll and Bellichik annual salaries are unknown. Presumably he could get a offer of at least 25M per season. Although control over the team would be most important.

I recall an Eagles message board thinkpiece 2 years ago wherein the question was posed, “Bob Kraft suddenly makes it known that he is willing to trade Belichick—what would you offer?”. I think the general consensus was somewhere around $100M.

Which gets me thinking: suppose you’re the Giants, and you agree with this valuation? What’s to prevent you from offering some chunk of equity in the Giants to Belichick as an incentive?

I think the money is largely irrelevant. It'd have to be a boatload of picks and/or players, with the no.2 pick at the top of the list.

Sorry, I’m not asking what it would take to pry Belichick loose if Kraft really isn’t thinking of letting him go—I realize that would take a lot more, as you noted. I’m just wondering if there’s anything preventing ownership of some team offering an equity stake to lure a really high value coach who’s not contractually bound.

My big question is whether this would need league approval. In which case I’ll bet other owners could, and would, nix it

This is what happens when you send your moron lucky-sperm-club owner an ocean away.

Bowles is a good coach. @luckiestman just got a little luckier.

I agree. Most internet outspoken Jets fans hate him, though. Reading ganggreen is like 4chan without the lulz; just anger and rage.

This actually came up in regards to the contract proposal offered to Gruden to coach the Raiders. Supposedly Davis has offered Gruden a stake in the team. I think it was Schafter on the ESPN pre game show who said that such a clause would have to be approved by the other owners. It is very unlikely as you mention that they would approve such a deal to let BB go to the Giants. Sorry no link just remember hearing it on TV.

Just saw Carson Palmer has retired.
Things ended on a sour note in Cincinnati, but he made the Bengals fun again and likely had an very promising career stolen from him. Even after that, he had a bunch of game-winning drives in '09 for a team that had no business winning a division and resurrected his career all the way back to MVP-level in 2015.

I always thought he had everything lined up to be a HOF-caliber quarterback, but he was never able to reach the level of dominance he seemed capable of.

His 137 career AV puts him on a tier with Donovan McNabb, Drew Bledsoe, and Boomer Esiason, which feels about right.
