2017 Gronk: Mojo Gronk

In all seriousness, one thing I repeatedly heard mentioned all year in regards to covering Gronk is that almost all of the teams have given him a clean release off the line. Some people were adamant that teams should at least try to jam him, while others then immediately countered that jamming him hasn't been effective either. Any numbers out there on how he has fared in different coverages? (That is if we're allowed to talk about the game yet, or are we still on mandated talking about ball pressure)

I figure this is the best place to put this, even though it is more about anticipating future appreciation of Gronk, say around 10 pm Sunday.

In 2013, Seattle lost three games, to Indianapolis, San Francisco and Arizona. Fleener caught 2 passes for 15 yards, Davis caught 2 for 21, and Arizona had 2 TEs combine for 4 catches, 33 yards. That doesn't suggestion a TE running wild is a key to beating Seattle. When they played against top tier TEs, Greg Olsen had 5 catches for 56 yards, Jimmy Graham had 3 for 42 yards, then 1 for 18, Tony Gonzalez had 3 catches for 29 yards, and Julius Thomas had 4 for 27. The Seahawks won all of those games.

In 2014, Antonio Gates torched them, 7/96 as Seattle lost. Then Witten only caught 2/24 as Dallas beat Seattle. Kelce went 3/37 and Cook went 3/25 in two other Seattle losses.Greg Olsen, who did some damage in 2013, went 1/16, but then 5/58 in the playoffs. I am sure football central will be able to do a lot more (if they think it's a key to the game), but it looks to me as though TEs can get decent yardage, even if the overall volume doesn't suggest covering the TE is a problem for Seattle.

That encourages me that Gronkowski, a better TE than Seattle has faced, can do slightly more damage (both in volume and yards/catch), and it can come at the right time. And, if a Seattle defense that is typically decent against TEs takes steps to reign in Gronk, that may open things up for others.

Gronk just read the buttcheeks line from A Gronking to Remember.

And after Gronk's reading from A Gronking to Remember at the Super Bowl Media Day, a reporter then asked him what he would do if a woman actually ran onto the field and wanted the ball spiked between her buttcheeks. "If someone wants it, that'd be pretty funny," Gronkowski said. "Why not try that?"

Gronk, please befriend Lynch and bring him to NE on a reasonable, two-year deal.
NE media can barely handle Bill's postgame most of the time, CHB might light himself on fire if Lynch comes to town. So yes, please, make it happen.

Dude really is a beast.  HIs legs are like oak trees and he did more reps at the combine than Terrell Suggs.

Though Vereen did 11 more.  Had no idea that dude was so strong.

I died about 4 times in that video. The vagina punch should be made into a gif.

Edit: The internet is a magical place.

Just a fantastic video, gives us an idea of why Marshawns teammates stand behind him so strongly.  If only more "reporters" and "sports journalists" could get over their inflated sense of self-importance and actually try to reach out to the players in a way that of all people Conan was able to pull off we'd get to know much more about the athletes.  Pretty sad state of affairs when Conan O'Brien is able to get us the best viewing of Marshawn "in the wild" of any news or entertainment outlet yet.

Thank you for posting this, both teams have a once in a generation level player who is all sorts of crazy.  These two ever being on the same team might cause the universe to implode.

Yikes. Lynch is not a once in a generation level player.

Unfortunately, that video should be in the Lynch Appreciation Thread.  Gronk is Ed McMahon to Lynch's Johnny Carson.

I have to say. Marshawn Lynch is absolutely hilarious in this. Gronk started slow but he kicked ass by the end. But Marshawn was just awesome.

"What are you on?"

"He's my life coach" is kind of an amazing line but yes, Marshawn is amazing.

EDIT: Lynch isn't a one in a generation guy--that's clearly Peterson--but if he stacks three or four more years like his last four he's a legit hall of fame candidate.  It's just so hard to tell how long a running back can keep it going because backs go from great to out of the league in a hurry.

I like Lynch. Not sure how you define "generational," but here's his first 120 games vs. Emmitt Smiths' first 120 games:

Lynch: 8,695 yds, 4.3 per attempt, 71 TD
Smith: 11,101, 4.3 per attempt, 111 TD

Now, Lynch's last four years, aged 25-28: 5,357, 4.54 per attempt, 48 TD
Smith's 25-28 seasons: 5,535, 4.15, 62 TD

Guy's good. Whatever happened in Buffalo in 2009/2010 makes his career numbers look off.

It may have been hyperbole'ish but to me he's incredible, a throw back running back to years past that absolutely punished their opponents.  I don't want the Gronk thread to turn into a throw away line I made, I just don't see anyone in the NFL with the same skill set he encompasses, ironically enough probably the closest out there is on the Pats.  Sorry if I over-inflated that comment, there just isn't another back like him in the NFL IMO hence my generational line for him and Gronk's otherworldly physical skills.

Emmit Smith was a very good back that played for like 15 years. His talent was longevity, and isn't a great example of "generational talent".

Peterson and Tomlinson are, IMO, the two "Generational Talents" at RB.

Curtis Martin is a little off, time-wise, but he's up there too.

Heck, Corey Dillon arguably had a better career than Lynch (although I'm all but positive Lynch will surpass him in the next year or two).

Barry Sanders, Jim Brown and Earl Campbell need to be mentioned as generational talents at RB. There have been lots of great, tremendous, prolific, enduring RB. Sanders is to Pedro Martinez as Peterson, Martin & Tomlinson are to Mike Mussina.

The conversation of generational talent starts and ends with Bo Jackson.

Bo had chunks of Barry Sanders in his stool. And I'm a huge Sanders fan.

We're talking about his Tecmo Bowl accomplishments, right? Because Bo's professional career was relatively uninspiring.

Finally watched the Conan video.  I'm having trouble breathing now I laughed so hard.  I had to stop it and rewind at least three times.

I forwarded it to all my friend.  He'll enjoy it too.

I think my favorite part was the ball grab tutorial in "a fine free zone"

My favorite part was when Marshawn walked off after the disembowlment. Way too graphic. The vag punch reaction was great too. Plus, the almost childlike wonder in their eyes when talking about Mario Kart and whenever they had no idea what the old red headed guy was talking about.

Lipitor!
You can't just say that Gronk.
Lipitor!

Then not knowing if it was for the heart or erections...he just wanted free cash like Conan got.

I NEED Marshawn Lynch in a Pats uni next year. He and Gronk will have so much fun together.

Edit: forgot an o in too

I wonder if BB signs Lynch if they give press conferences together next season. The world may implode.

Exactly. Accomplishments and talent are related, but not the same thing.
