Honestly, I think this is kind of smartly played by the Steelers. He will have a ton of mileage on him when they let him walk.

On the other hand... would it surprise anyone if he sat a bunch of games for "injuries", including possibly a playoff game? I picture LDT in the 2007 AFFCG in Foxboro.
Has he signed the franchise tender? If not, I don't believe he is under any financial penalty for not reporting. And I believe he can accrue a full year of service time if he reports by game 11.

If I'm wrong about any of this, please correct me.

I thought service time accrual only really mattered to gain UFA status?

Thanks. That's why I begged for correction.

But can he be fined if he does not sign the tender?
I could easily be wrong as well, haha, I was kinda hoping you’d elaborate on why you were mentioning game 11. I guess it would matter towards repeated franchise tender status as well. As for fining him, I don’t know either, but good question. One would think they could and whenever he eventually signs it, he has to pay it; but also if he were to sit out the whole year, what the hell they going to do, right? Good questions. These CBAs get more confusing by the day but at least it’s not the nba.

Franchise players are paid their salary via 16 prorated game checks. As such, they can sit out the entire preseason without being fined/losing money. Once the regular season starts, they lose 1/16 of their salary for every week/game missed. The week 11 deadline is for a service year, which, if not met, would affect Bell from receiving the higher, more prohibitive, franchise rate.

Bell will miss the preseason and show up for week 1, like he did last year. Sitting out a potential playoff game (or games) is interesting because he would only miss the bonus playoff check(s), which is quite small compared to his regular salary. Also, I believe the extension window re-opens after the regular season, so he could possibly extort the Steelers into giving him an extension with guaranteed money before playing in the playoffs if he wanted to really push it.

That is what I thought. Thank you.

It’s not crazy to save tread on the tires by missing the first 10 weeks. They cannot prevent him from reporting week 11. Ultimate hardball would be to tell them, now, you’re sitting in the postseason as well. And you tell your teammates, now, that this is exactly what you’re going to do for business reasons.

I wasn't sure where to put this or if it deserved its own thread to mock the article's subject:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/24131628/north-carolina-larry-fedora-says-football-attack

Some gems (emphasis mine):
altering the game is an overreaction to injuries and will, in the end, have a profound effect on the entire country
"Our game is under attack," Fedora told reporters. "I fear the game will be pushed so far from what we know that we won't recognize it in 10 years. And if it does, our country will go down, too."
Fedora said he'd talked to military personnel who'd suggested the success of the U.S. military was due, in part, to the number of football players who went on to join the armed forces.
I'll steal the response of someone at work: "why else would it have taken the colonies 8 years to win their freedom? obviously they didn't have the rigorous training that a lifetime of football provides."

I've never heard of Larry Fedora, but he sounds made up. Is he always this insane?

Overall, I would call it a positive if the Browns in particular and the NFL in broader terms are open to supportiing players as they treat and receive help for substance abuse problems without falling immediately into a position of blaming and criticizing the player for being an addict.
To be sure. But the players have been off for months. To have to absent yourself just as everybody is coming in to remain on the right path just underscores how touch and go this must be for him.

When I read Gordon’s statement, to me it sounded as if this was something pre-planned, like everyone was sort of aware that he was going to do this, but the reaction that I’ve seen sounds like this is unexpected and negative.

When I read Gordon’s statement, to me it sounded as if this was something pre-planned, like everyone was sort of aware that he was going to do this, but the reaction that I’ve seen sounds like this is unexpected and negative.
Shortly after Gordon's tweets, the Browns announced that he will be placed on the non-football illness reserve list "until he is ready to return."

"We will continue to support Josh as he receives the care needed to maintain his progress," Browns general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "We are going to respect his privacy while he is away from the team."

A league source told ESPN that the Browns expect Gordon to return, as he vowed, but there is no exact timetable given the nature of the treatment. The Browns believe that Gordon is doing all he can to ensure there are no setbacks, according to the source.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy also said there is no timetable for Gordon's return, saying in a statement that the league will "address the matter at an appropriate time." McCarthy also noted that Gordon has not been suspended.

The league says he's no suspended.

The team says it supports him.

Where's the unexpected and negative reaction?

Do you use Twitter at all?

Lots of speculation that he had failed a drug test or was being suspended and this was a proactive move to try and curb a suspension.

I stated that my initial reaction was that this was a positive move, which is why I was surprised to see negative speculation.

It's possible this is off topic, but I'd pay good money to hear a Queen version of that song

By any chance, have you heard of Felger and Mazz? (That is not a snarky, rhetorical question — you plainly mean well.) Twitter is who they are in these situations. Proctologists will go out of business no time soon.

Schefter’s sources tell him this is to address, “mental health and anxiety.” That makes sense; Schefter is generally solid.

The sad reality may well be that Gordon self medicated for years, at least as far back as college — just to deal with it all. That option is no longer available.

I love Twitter and hate Twitter. I hate the speculative nature of Twitter which quickly evolves into a mob. Anyone want to wait for the facts? No, no, you just want to rage? I guess that's a pet-peeve with journalism too in the information age.

Look at the story about the guy who "stole" the baseball from the kid at the Cubs game? He had given the kid a ball or two before. His section said he would catch the balls thrown his way and then distribute them. He kept one after giving away the first 3-4 including at least 1 to the kid. But we see something, we don't wait for any sort of contextual facts coming out and we ride our steed quickly to moral high-ground where we then lob mortars on anyone below. Fucking lazy can't-wait-to-rush-to-judgment. As for Josh? I hope he gets the help he needs and kicks ass on the field.

I like Diggs a lot, but this contract seems insane.

Vikings giving WR Stefon Diggs a five-year extension with a total value of $81 million that includes just over $40 million in guaranteed money, per source. Diggs has not had a 100-catch nor 1000-yard season, but he has lots of ability.

if you've got a WR who can jedi-mind-trick a safety into bizarrely easing up on you when you're defenseless and coming down from a jump, make him hit nothing but air, and then charge past him 50 yards to end his season and finish a miraculous comeback, you gotta open up the checkbook. You don't get to sign wizards every day.

OK, how do I find this video and learn about this guy Marcus Smarting safeties?

Because he sounds cool:

“It means a lot to me because my dad sat me down a couple months before he passed away,’’ Diggs said while choking up. “He just told me, ‘Look after your (three) brothers. Look after your mom. Look after your family.’ That meant a lot to me. With this day coming forward, it just came full circle. I have a lot of emotions.’’

Cleveland is trading former first-round pick WR Corey Coleman to the Buffalo Bills for a draft pick, per source.

Coleman was the player the Browns selected after trading the No. 2 overall pick to Philadelphia so the Eagles could draft Carson Wentz.

With no deal in place after face-to-face meetings last week, Odell Beckham Jr’s agent Zeke Sandhu is no longer in town. According to a #Giants team source, both sides worked diligently to consummate a deal, but could not agree on Beckham’s true market value. My understanding is that the Giants are currently valuing Odell Beckham at a total average per year below Sammy Watkins.

That tweet obviously came from an ODB source.

Sammy Watkins contract is ridiculous at $16m a year. I'd assume they want OBJ for longer than 3 years, so they offered him 5-6 years at $12-14 mil a year. So, yeah, "less than Watkins per year" with a significant bump in years and, I'd assume, guarantees (Watkins has $25mil guaranteed).

If I were ODB, I'd be pushing for a 4-5 year fully guaranteed deal.

Gut punch here. Had generated some excitement. He was smiling, saying everything ok after the game, and it didn’t look THAT bad on the field.
