Listening to WFAN this morning and I heard something new. Benigno (the host) just claimed that when Parcells went over to the Jets one of the first things that came up was him refusing to assure the Mannings he would take Peyton if he declared for the draft (Jets had the no 1 pick that year), which resulted in Manning returning to Tennessee for a final year and eventually going to the Colts.

Anyone else ever hear this story, or is this just Benigno blowing smoke?

Here is an article on that story: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/myers-bill-parcells-made-peyton-manning-jets-qb-article-1.2556313

“If Bill had come out and said, ‘Peyton, you’re my guy, I’m going to pick you,’ it may have made it a little bit harder,” Archie said. “But I swear he wanted to be a senior.”
So probably not, but maybe. It is a legit rumor.

There are a ton of rumors about the entry of both Mannings into the NFL, this may or may not be true, but it is fun to think about. I personally think that the "he was the obvious top pick" in his junior year draft has been a bit overhyped. Admittedly, the cupboard was BARE for QBs in that draft (I think......Jake Plummer???....was the first QB selected and was arguably the best QB to come out that year), but there was very good talent at the top of the draft, including another miss by Mr. "I want to do the groceries" - Orlando Pace.

There were some big questions about Manning.....similar to what we saw with Derek Carr, where people look at a relative and project their failings onto a different human. And in his Senior year at UT he learned not only more about playing QB, but also about being a celebrity QB (sending pizzas to the folks waiting for tickets, being an asset in the community, etc). He had a humongous insurance policy on that UT paid for (I think Archie may have bent them over for this one) too.

Bill Parcells made some huge mistakes at the Jets. Was Peyton Manning one of them? Maybe, but not picking Orlando Pace is still pretty damning.

PITTSBURGH —New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, a multi-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection, is being investigated by Pittsburgh police, who are considering filing felony charges stemming from an early-morning street altercation on the South Side last weekend.

The 31-year-old Aliquippa native has not been charged, and it's not clear if he is currently in Pennsylvania.

Sources close to the investigation told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that two men were punched near the corner of South 23rd and East Carson streets. The incident was reported around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

A police officer who drove by the area saw Revis speaking to two people; when he came back around, two of them were knocked out and Revis was gone, sources said.

Police have retrieved video from a phone belonging to one of the alleged victims, despite a claim by the victims that Revis took the phone from its owner and tried to delete video before throwing the phone into Carson Street, sources said.

Sources provided this timeline of the alleged events:

- Revis was approached by two people on the street who complimented his clothes and asked if he was Revis.

- Revis answered yes. The men continued to follow him and started recording him on a cellphone.

- A shoving match ensued as Revis asked the men to leave him alone.

- Victims say Revis grabbed the phone from one man in an attempt to delete the video, then threw the phone into Carson Street.

- A friend of Revis' approached, and the two men were punched. Nobody saw who threw the blows.

- Both of the injured men were taken to the hospital. One suffered broken bones around his eye.

Yeah, I'm no fan of the Jets or even of Revis, frankly, but the details from the lengthier ESPN article make it sound like the guys he ended up punching were following him, taunting him, and may have threatened him at several points, and that he attempted to keep walking away and they were having none of it. And eventually they managed to harass their way into a trip to the hospital with a busted eye socket.

What kind of moron wants to play tough-guy to someone who PLAYS IN THE NFL?! A drunk yinzer, that's who. Christ, if the facts play out the way I'm reading them, they should give Revis a medal for knocking common sense into the guy.

Is there another article on this besides the Rich Cimini one? All I see in Cimini's article is that Revis claimed they shoved him and yelled at him. Nothing about taunting or threats.

I'm sure we'll know more details at some point, but Revis' account sounds a bit shaky to me. He was out real estate shopping at 2:30 am, on a street packed with bars and clubs? Really? And the cell phone video reviewed by the police shows the guys following Revis describing what he's wearing (no mention of taunting or threats in the police report), before he turns around, confronts them asking why they were following him, and then the video ends.

I'm leaning more toward Revis had tied a few on somewhere and didn't like being followed by some guys who were annoyingly excited at the fact they'd just met Darrelle Revis, and bad things happened.

The above-the-fold paragraphs on Cimini's article make Revis sound bad - he was charged with felonies! His lawyer wants him to surrender to police! - but the below-the-fold stuff sounded quite mitigating:

According to police, Dallas Cousins, a 22-year-old from Kittanning, Pennsylvania, was walking on a street when he spotted someone who resembled Revis. Cousins confronted Revis, who acknowledged his identity. At that point, Cousins began recording video on his cellphone and continued to follow the NFL star.

"At some point, Revis snatched the cellphone away and attempted to delete the video," the police statement said.

According to the police statement, Revis tossed the cellphone onto the street. Zacheriah Jarvis, a 21-year-old from Ross Township, Pennsylvania, who is Cousins' roommate, helped retrieve it. An argument ensued. An unidentified man came to help Revis. The other men told police they "were punched, then remember waking up to talk to police."
...
Officers viewed the cellphone video at the scene and confirmed the person in it was Revis. Police said the video "shows Revis walking away from the group and Cousins following him, describing what Revis is wearing. The video then shows Revis standing in front of the White Eagle Bar and stating, 'Why are you following me?' several times before the video stops."

...

Jones said Revis had returned home to Pittsburgh to visit family and friends and stopped by a location on the South Side that he is in the process of developing. Asked by reporters Thursday night why Revis was there at such a late hour, Jones said his client "didn't want to be around a lot of people" while looking at the real estate investments and "kind of wanted to do it on his own terms."

Revis was "physically assaulted while at the location by a group of at least five people," Jones said.

The attorney said Revis was shoved by one of the men and attempted to walk away. The man who pushed Revis, he said, yelled at him. At that point, Revis knocked the cellphone out of the man's hand, according to Jones.

"It's my understanding that when Darrelle turned around, he wasn't sure whether it was a weapon or a phone," Jones told reporters. "He didn't know. He just knows he left, these guys were saying his name, he turns around and sees an object, and he wasn't sure what it was or whether he was going to get robbed or assaulted or what.

"He feared for his safety."
The facts certainly leave room for the lawyer's story to be true. I'm going with Revis' sin being "wandering around while black and famous" and this Dallas Cousins guy decided to have a sick story to show off to his bros.

And I don't read the bolded as "real estate shopping", I read it as "looking at the status of construction" or "surveying the neighborhood". Either way, his reasons for being there are kinda irrelevant.

The idea that Revis had thrown back a few at one of the several hundred nearby bars seems plausible too, of course, but that doesn't mean he wasn't assaulted before he did some battering, or didn't legitimately fear for his safety.

Ah, I missed the "in the process of developing" bit from that piece. Odd to be out at that hour looking at properties he owns, but no matter. Maybe we're both right - he was out having some drinks and decided to walk down and look at his developments. As you say, though, why he was there is irrelevant.

It's funny that you say the above the fold stuff makes Revis look bad. I thought some of the verbiage in the article - that Cousins "confronted" Revis - was a curious choice in that it tends to make Cousins look like the aggressor. Not sure if that was deliberate or not. If you see Tom Brady walking down the street and walk up to him, you're not "confronting" him, at least not in the way that term is generally understood.

Anyway, we'll see how it all shakes out. I try not to form judgments in the early hours of these kinds of stories, so I should give Revis the same treatment here.

That is certainly in line with Cimini's style. His writing is generally whiny, annoying and difficult to read at best. I'm not a Jets fan but I can't imagine he is popular with those who are.

It sounds like to me he was being harassed and followed and he protected himself.

I'm sure more info will be released, but I don't think he did anything wrong given what the two dudes were doing to him.

You could also use "accosted", which would also be true.

Put it this way, seems likely that Revis didn't go out looking for some young yinzer bros to get down with last night.
Well, Cimini used that term in describing how Cousins initially interacted with Revis when he first saw him, not what happened later. "Confronted" is a bit of a loaded term implying a certain level of aggression, as is "accosted". I would think that if you didn't know what went down - and we and Cimini don't at this point - "approached" sounds more neutral.

Anyway, quibbling over words - I was mostly just amused that InstaFace thought the article seemed slanted against Revis, while I thought it seemed slanted against Cousins. Everyone reads things differently.

So Revis hired Robert Del Greco Jr -- described as "the Steelers go-to lawyer."

That's fucking awesome. I didn't know the Steelers had a "go-to lawyer" ... I wouldn't have fathomed the need for such a fellow because ... well you know why.

Better yet, Mr. Del Greco is the son of a MFY. Literally. He has pictures, as a young tot, with Mickey Fucking Mantle, dad's teammate. Which is beyond cool.

This is how the royals do it. They crap like everyone else, and their crap smells like everyone else's. Have the same addictions, infirmities, weaknesses. Commit the same adulteries. Commit the same crimes. They share lawyers and dynastic ties.

I wouldn't say that, I thought Cimini's writing was schizophrenic enough that the only thing I'm sure he was trying to do was troll for eyeballs, and even that he did fairly poorly at, given the meatball he was lobbed in subject matter.

We'll learn far more from the news articles by better writers, written in a week or so.

Good - hope he gets off (assuming these other guys started it).

I was reading that the Jets could possibly get away without paying Revis the last bit of guaranteed money if he ends up getting convicted from this. Would hate for that to happen.

Cimini indicated the other day that Revis' guarantee kicks in on March 10, so I don't see how the Jets will be able to pull this off in time.

Albert Breer posted the contract section which had a "conduct unbecoming" clause. It does not specify a conviction as a requirement. Being charged with a felony could potentially qualify.

Then again, if the Jets utilize that clause, it's bound to piss off existing Jets players and might even discourage other guys from signing there. It's more than a little opportunistic, and that could rub some players the wrong way.

So, TMZ got on-site cell video of the incident, because of course they did. That's what Florio is analyzing. It's not any clearer to me exactly what happened, but now there's hard evidence that Revis knocked those guys out (the police are treating it as such, anyway), and not (yet) any evidence that they were harassing him.

Anyway, I'd say that it's more likely we'll see an MLB team enforce the "first-class physical fitness" clause in their contract as grounds to terminate it than we'll see the Jets screw a guy over something he gets acquitted from... but then, it's the Jets we're talking about. Plus, I know exactly nothing about how Mike MacCagnan handles his business. Any impressions, @luckiestman ?

Um that's not security cam footage or hard evidence that Revis did anything. It's a cell phone video of two dudes lying down while some guy (who doesn't sound like Revis and who Revis says isn't him) brags he did it.

Totally agree. Obviously none of knows yet, but "my best guess from that TMZ video"* is it looks staged.

Darrelle Revis placed the call just past 8 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2015, with one question: Do we have a deal with the Jets?

A few weeks after becoming a champion with the Patriots, the NFL's biggest mercenary of this generation was ready to squeeze more money out of the one man who he knew would be willing to overpay for his services again.

Nearly two months after Woody Johnson erred in revealing that he'd "love to have Darrelle back," the cornerback was eager to cash in before the official start of free agency in 2015.

It would be 17 more days before NFL investigators descended upon the Jets facility to question general manager Mike Maccagnan and others about possible tampering.

Johnson's words at that December press conference became the face of the tampering that ultimately prompted a $100,000 fine, but back-channel discussions with the Jets in February set the foundation for a Revis reunion.

Team officials in stealth mode communicated with Revis, Inc., through private cell phones and face-to-face covert meetings at the 2015 Scouting Combine rather than make calls from the team's landlines at their Florham Park facility. No paper trails were a must.

Johnson, the driving force behind bringing back Revis to right a wrong in his mind, endorsed all of it.

It turned out to be a colossal mistake by the Jets owner

Florio is having fun with this alright:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/02/20/the-revis-tampering-from-2015-was-pretty-much-what-everyone-thought-it-was/

Karma exactly right. Ask the Ambassador-to-be himself. After Goodell, and the Colts, and Ravens -- and hell, I'll even throw Jerry Jones and Arthur Blank into the mix -- they looked the other way when Kraft was getting hosed.

The tampering rules generally are a joke. But it's nice to see this guy blatantly violate them and choke on the s-sandwich.
