Jeremy Hill, possibly the best RB on the roster not named Michel, went down with a truly unfortunate knee injury. Loyko says Pats will need to bring another RB. No other updates as of yet.
@NEPD_Loyko
Feel awful for Jeremy Hill who was in the best shape of his life and poised to play a huge role in #Patriots offense. Pats will need to bring in another RB.

Seems like injuries are nullifying almost all of the offseason moves to reshape the squad. I guess the exception (knocking wood) is the defense's front seven.

Guess Loyko thinks Michel is a ways away. That blows, if he’s right.

is there any way Hill's knee isn't blown out?

really weird fluky play it happened on. but that's the NFL.

Any updates on Cannon? Missed when he went out, just remember being surprised Waddle got the call to block Watt 1-on-1.

All I found was a tweet saying he was stretching his leg.

It was stated Canon was fine, hardly played in the preseason so they rotated him out a bit.

Uggh, I hope there's some positive news for Hill. Hoping that it's a minor tweak and that he's just out for a couple of games.

I don't know if any docs weighed in on this already, but it looked like a classic side hit to me. If it's only the MCL, it wouldn't be the whole year for sure. We'll find out soon enough.

Dr. Jessica Flynn from BSJ, tweeted: "Patriots RB #JeremyHill right knee injury is by video at best a significant MCL sprain, at worst multi-ligament injury including ACL."

Dr. David Chao (I know, I know) opined on Twitter: "By video, at least a high grade MCL sprain/tear. Hope his ACL and other structures spared. Best case, multi-week absence coming for #JeremyHill"

Doc Flynn on the NBCSN said her only reason for optimism that was "just" an MCL sprain was that it didn't look like his foot was fully planted when he was hit.

I know its a world where Shit happens. But Man if I am Hill and I have lost my season and some serious potential earnings, I have to be pissed at Gronk and Devlin.

Having someone to blame is easier then shit happens.

What is the deal with Michel — as if anyone knows.

Is he close, or are they just trying to finesse a bone-on-bone situation that’s never really going to get better. I guess we’ll find out eventually.

Unknown. We don’t really know what the problem is with the knee to begin with, so it’s hard to anticipate how the Pats will handle him.

It’s turning into a big question pretty fast for this version of the Patriots.

Ugh. I really liked that signing. What a weird career he's had. Runs for 1,124 and 9 TD his rookie season looking like a future star. Then gets caught behind a putrid OL and loses job. Signs on to Pats on 1 year deal where he would have helped his value and gets taken out on a fluke play in first game. He turns 26 in October so who knows if he ever gets another shot. Just a shame.

We have a ton invested in Michel's bum knee now.

Hill started sucking long before the Bengals OL did. They still had Whitworth and Zeitler in 2015-16 when he started going south. He hasn't done much of anything since 2014 against teams not named the Browns.

You're the resident Bengals expert here so I defer to your knowledge on this but would be curious to know what changed in his body, running style from 2014 to 2015-2017. He looked like a much different RB those years vs. 2014.

I think a lot of it is mental - he had two fumbles in Week 2 of 2015 and really seemed tentative after that. Also, a lot of his success in 2014 came out of 21 personnel (mostly out of necessity as Jones and Eifert were lost for the year and Green missed a bunch of games) and they began to phase H-Back Ryan Hewitt out of the offense more and more (not before giving him an extension, of course) before cutting him this year. He's never had great measurables so once those factors were gone, he didn't have much to fall back on.

looking at the replay he had the guy wrapped up OK and Develin actually helped jar him loose. one of the weirdest ACL plays I've ever seen, hope he overcomes it in time for next year, here or elsewhere.

Sometimes I wonder if Belichick believes that there is actually such a thing as an injury prone player. This is completely observational and not based on hard facts or data but it feels like when constructing rosters Bill takes a view point that “it’s players responsibility to play” and their history of games played per year is not given enough weighting in whatever calculus they use. I’m sure there are many factors they consider when building the roster and that some are seen as more important than others. It at times just feels like ability to stay on the field is not weighted properly.

It's not always so easy to predict which players will recover completely from an injury (Brady, Welker), which ones will not (Cyrus Jones, Malcolm Mitchell), and which ones are just unlucky (Gronk). Most injuries are random events and are completely unpredictable. Noone could predict that Develin would land on Hill's knee or that Wynn would blow his Achilles. Burkhead's latest was a concussion, which tend to be completely random.

Gronk came into the league with about a questionable health history as anyone. His injuries have continued for sure. But is there anyone, either Pat fan or not, who wouldn’t say that the actual production has far outweighed the negatives of games spent injured?

And with the exception of his back injuries (2013 and 2016), his subsequent injuries had nothing to do with his prior injury history, but instead were just the product of really bad luck: broken arm, re-break of same arm, high ankle sprain, ACL, concussion.

I don't think the fact that most of his injuries are flukes change his point--even if every game he's ever missed was related to his prior history. You are gambling on the talent. It sucks that Michel isn't healthy now, but if he comes back and plays 8-12 games down the stretch and is a factor in the postseason, then I'll take.

At the same time, Belichick has shown some propensity to reward players who stay healthy. A couple years ago, David Andrews and James White signed contract extensions within days of each other; neither had missed even a practice the prior season. McCourty has only missed five total games in his career; he got a huge deal. Mason has stayed very healthy; he just got a big deal. Mankins was super-durable; he got a huge deal. Wilfork and Mayo were durable early, though each had some injury issues towards the end. Certainly other guys with injury histories (Gronk, Hightower, Amendola, Edelman) have gotten sizable deals despite some injury history.

During cutdowns, we see a lot of banged-up fringey guys get cut. So he definitely holds it against guys when they miss time because of injury. But it does seem like, once a player is cleared by the medical staff, Belichick is inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt moving forward.

I'm surprised we haven't heard a whisper about Kenny Britt. Also sunshine and buttercups through the spring, then strained a hammy in June, and he was disappeared. If it really was just a hamstring, over 3 months ago, shouldn't it be better by now? Far as I can tell he hasn't gotten a whiff from anybody.

Anything on Flowers or Chung
Neither at practice on Friday, per Reiss...

Second-year TE Jacob Hollister, who has not been listed on the injury report this week, was not spotted during the media-access portion of practice Friday. So his status becomes something to watch closely for when Friday's injury report is released later in the day. Meanwhile, safety Patrick Chung (concussion) and DE Trey Flowers (concussion) were not spotted, which puts both of their status in doubt for Sunday night's game against the Lions as they haven't practiced all week. TE Rob Gronkowski (ankle) looked like he was moving well.

Burkhead has just been a huge disappointment with injuries. Have no idea how Bentley got hurt.
