2018 Patriots Roster

I'm really interested in how the competition shakes out at cornerback. Gilmore and Dawson are roster locks. Jason McCourty and Eric Rowe would figure to be the front-runners for the 2/3 spots, but they're both in the last year of their deals. The team saves a little less than $3 MM if they cut J.McCourty and a little more than $1 MM if they cut Rowe. Then they've got Jonathan Jones, who has been a good special teamer and looked good on defense at times in 2017; he's coming off injury and is on the last year of his deal, too (though he's a RFA after 2018). Cyrus Jones is returning from injury and has been bad in limited duty, though he was a second round pick just two years ago. Keion Crossen was a 7th-rounder and JC Jackson was an interesting UDFA; both would be under control several years cheap. They like Ryan Lewis enough that they paid him like he was on the active roster when Buffalo tried to sign him from the practice squad. Jomal Wiltz spent all last season on the PS, too. They could keep as many as six CB (five is more likely) and it wouldn't be shocking to see them move on from J.McCourty or Rowe depending on how everyone is playing.

Picture of Trenton Brown next to Mike Reiss. Trenton Brown is a massive human. Holy shit he's huge. I mean you hear 385 and then you see it in context...

Brown is huge but Reiss is also tiny. Isaiah Thomas was a full head taller than him, the guys like 5’3”.
Yup, I think another reporter puts out one of these pics ever year or two with Reiss.

I guess it's all fun and games since he can turn around and smile about who's the top Pats beat reporter. ;) But yeah it's been a fun ongoing thing for a few years now I think.

Yeah I think Volin sent out the pic with him and Thomas last year at a charity golf event or something.

Reiss himself makes fun of it, I remember one he sent out of himself next to Solder with something like ‘next time I’ll remember to find a bench to sit on’.

I love JD but...I mean, for a FB?
In the grand scheme of things, this isn't that much money. Develin becomes the sixth-highest paid FB on an annual basis. There are only nine FB who aren't on rookie / minimum contracts, so it's pretty fair.

You may also notice ... Belichick cuts against the grain in terms of positional value pretty consistently, investing more than most teams on positions like S, TE, special teams, slot, off-ball LB, and the interiors of both lines, and less than most teams on WR, edge rusher. CB and RB they've gone back and forth.

I am wondering when Flowers will get an extension (or if). He’s probably our best player on the D-Line but isn’t your prototype. He’s great for us. I wonder if he gets the Hightower treatment, go out and then come back to the Pats because the Pats highly values his contributions.

NBA players and lineman are the people you see oin TV that are much bigger than you think, since they are surrounded by each other all the time. Even in the CFL, the oline guys visits schools (they are mostly lower paid Canadian guys) and is always a shock.

And he broke his wrist...scoring a touchdown in the Bachelorette football game...and had to leave the show to get surgery

Well, so I'm told

Draft twitter has all the hot takes on it because PFF’s Mike Renner was on it. That is correct.

I expect Patriots are very interested in Eric Decker (as he is in Patriots), who is considered by some a WR/TE hybrid out of the Aaron Hernandez mold. Stay tuned.

Not sure where Bill gets that he's a WR/TE hybrid, but he would be a nice addition to the WR depth.

I don't have anything against Decker, but don't they already have a bunch of guys like that? What does he bring that Hogan / Britt / Matthews don't?

Not to be flippant but he brings what Hogan/Britt/Matthews might not.

Basically if they can sign him to a "cheap cut-able contract" he is a throw against a wall and see what sticks guy along with the threesome you mentioned.
(Ok Hogan might be the "Floor" of this foursome as you know what you have. Or Hogan might be the "Big X" starter and Decker should be grouped with Britt and Matthews as having a competition to be his Backup and or 6/7th target.
I dont think anyone would want us to commit much guaranteed money to Decker.

This also worries me as a Mal Mitchell Fan. Decker might slot into his roster spot nicely if Mal is a lost cause.

All that said, i might be a little surprised if he chooses NE (and the competition it entails) for a "cheap cut-able contract".

I thought Decker was in the running for "most washed up skill player" last year (I think Antonio Gates takes the prize, though). I would be surprised if he catches another regular-season pass.
