That makes sense. It would be foolish to do an extension now given all the uncertainty with the cap moving forward. Pretty much all they can do at this point.

So I was talking to my dad earlier and he said there’s a provision in the NHL that if the season is ever cut short the team with the most points is crowned champion. Is that true?

Did he also tell you that he could crack 6 eggs at a time? That seems a little far-fetched. And who'd want that anyhow? (See you at the social distance parade!)

Unfortunately I think that’s a wrap on Kevan Miller’s playing career. There’s a place for him in the game somewhere when the league starts back up again.

I think the Bruins are generally very good at developing players, especially ones that fit into their system.

I think their weakness is getting the most out of guys who don't. I also think it doesn't really matter. How many guys were on the Bruins' roster bubble and went on to be impact NHLers in the last 5-10 years? A lot of them have been vocal about feeling like they weren't given a fair chance by the coaching staff, but none of them have gone on to be anything special.

You could make an argument about Seguin and Hamilton being given away for too little because they didn't "fit", but those are different kinds of players than what I'm talking about. And someone like Pastrnak is the counter argument there. Or at least shows they've learned from previous mistakes.

I'm surprised Cehlarik couldn't find an NHL job though. He seems to be a specific type of player that NHL teams undervalue -- they drive possession but aren't "gritty".

He’s not productive enough to be a top 6 winger, and he doesn’t do enough of the things that are required of a bottom six winger. He had his chance to stick when Bjork got hurt last year and couldn’t do anything with it. I always liked his skill, but he doesn’t deserve to play over any of their other wingers. That’s not on Cassidy.

I totally agree he's not good enough to play for the Bruins, the best team in the NHL. I think he's good enough to play in the NHL though, and I think the "things that are required of a bottom six winger" are the market inefficiency here.

Very strong words from someone who has historically been pretty pro law enforcement. I'm pleasantly surprised at how many NHLers are speaking out, they're usually silent in times like these. I get the feeling opinions are starting to change a bit with regard to social issues among players.

The thing that I like is that Bergeron (and Crosby before him) are basically saying "I have not been part of the solution, but I want to be and I'm going to start by listening."

I get the feeling opinions are starting to change a bit with regard to social issues among players a significant portion of the world.
Fixed that for me. The outcry to this is not like anything I've seen in my life. I hope it does work.

I didn't think I could admire a sports figure that I don't know personally more than I did Bergeron before this. Clearly, I was wrong. Hopefully guys like Subban, him and Crosby can find ways to change the culture in this sport.

I would be very OK if activism caused the hockey season to be cancelled.

Edit: to clarify, not activism against hockey, but activism against racism that causes enough players to be unavailable (coivd, protesting, etc) that the season is unfeasible.

Chara, Lindholm and Moore were skating together today. They’re trickling back in.

Sweeney said yesterday that everyone except Kevan Miller (season over) is in full health.

Sad to say, since the guy has always been one of my favorites, but Miller sounds more like a guy who should be retirement planning than a guy who intends to go back to being a pro athlete.

Butch spoke with the media today.

- Training camp is still on track for 7/10.
- They have rosters of 28 and 30 plus 4 goalies ready to go for camp. He won’t divulge the end of the roster because he wasn’t sure a) how many they can bring and b) they haven’t notified everyone. Cshea guess- the 22 skaters on the roster when play halted plus Trent Frederic, Karson Kuhlman, Jack Studnicka, Steve Kampfer, Urho Vaakanainen, Jakob Zboril. That’s 28. Maybe swap Zboril for another F like Gaunce, Ritchie or Senyshyn.
- 4 goalies are Rask and Halak plus Lagace and Vladar.
- Coaches/management can’t be with the players working out at Warrior right now, but he gets info from the training staff.
- He’ll talk with Chara and Bergy before camp starts to gauge how the guys are feeling and their comfort level with the situation. Goal is still to win the Stanley Cup. — If a player indicates they don’t want to play, the organization would be supportive.
- Jokes that is they end up in Toronto they’ve had playoff success in that rink.
- Asked about keeping the players entertained in the bubble, he says the Xbox guys will be fine.

So camp is supposed to open Monday, pending the ratification of the RTP and CBA. 30 skaters and unlimited goalies can attend and then go to the bubble. The opt-out deadline is sometime next week. Here's where we left off:

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Krejci - Kase
Ritchie - Coyle - Bjork
Kuraly - Lindholm - Wagner
Blidh, Nordstrom, Kuhlman*

Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Carlo
Grzelyck - Lauzon
Moore, Clifton

That's the 23 skaters they had on the roster at the time of the shutdown, plus Kuhlman who was in Providence. He's been part of the voluntary workouts at Warrior, so I assume they told him he's in. So here's a guess at the other 6:

Jack Studnicka
Paul Carey
Trent Frederic
Zach Senyshyn or Brett Ritchie
Urho Vaakanainen
Steven Kampfer

That is 19F and 11 D. I could see them going 18/12 and dropping an F for Zboril or Petrovic on the back end.

Good for him. What an impossibly difficult decision to make, complicated even more by the fact that he’s a fringe guy that needs to display that drive and hustle (compete factor?) that would set him apart from other fringe NHL guys.

He now has a big fan in me.

Talked with someone today that knows the Kampfer family. Not that anybody needs to question him but totally legit on multiple levels for him asking out. Shitty situation all around.

We're back!

Marchand - Bergeron - Kuhlman
DeBrusk - Krejci - Bjork
Ritchie - Coyle - Kuraly
Nordstrom - Lindholm - Wagner
Carey - Studnicka - Senyshyn

Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Carlo
Grzelyck - Lauzon
Moore - Clifton
Zboril

Rask
Halak
Lagace

No Pastrnak, Kase, Blidh, Frederic, Vaakanainen and Vladar. Sweeney said yesterday that they expected 1-2 players to be unable to participate today due to international travel and quarantine issues. Not sure if that's the case for all 4 or if there were any positive tests. The league is handling injury/testing communication so we'll probably never really know. The coaches are also wearing masks on the ice.
