SMU getting the Cotton Bowl would be pretty great.

To whom do we need to speak to get a bowl game on Christmas? Is that so much to ask?

OSU DE Chase Young suspended at least one game for violating NCAA rules.. he accepted a loan from a 'family friend' that he's known since before his freshman year at OSU... so three years? He's definitely out against Maryland and could miss more time depending on what the NCAA decides.

Is the G5 getting more respect than in years past? Is it unusually top-heavy this season? Or is the Committee deliberately overrating some of those teams a bit to provide visibility to its thinking about the race for the G5 NY6 berth, which is pretty much all the rankings below #15 or so are relevant to anyways.

Well ... the committee definitely works backwards to get the results they want. But below are the G5 schools (and Army) that appeared in the CFP and AP rankings in Week 13 each year. (Definitely subject to human error.) They clearly made an adjustment after Year 1, but otherwise, I'm not seeing much difference.

2019

CFP: #18 Memphis, #19 Cincy, #20 Boise, #24 App St, #25 SMU
AP: #17 Cincy, #18 Memphis, #20 Boise, #23 App St, #21 SMU

Difference: Equal number of teams, -5 total ranks

2018

CFP: #9 UCF, #21 Utah St, #23 Boise
AP: #8 UCF, #14 Utah St, #21 Boise, #23 Army* (note: Army is technically not a G5 team and not eligible for the access bowl spot)

Difference: -1 ranked teams, -12 total ranks (assumes Army would have been #26 in the CFP)

2017

CFP: #15 UCF, #20 Memphis, #23 Boise
AP: #13 UCF, #17 Memphis, #22 USF, #25 Boise

Difference: -1 ranked teams, -7 total ranks (assumes USF would have been #26 in the CFP)

2016

CFP: #19 Boise, #20 Houston, #21 Western Mich, #25 Navy
AP: #14 Western Mich, #18 Houston, #20 Boise

Difference: +1 ranked teams, -5 total ranks (Navy had the third-most AP votes amongst unranked teams)

2015

CFP: #15 Navy, #24 Toledo, #25 Temple
AP: #16 Navy, #24 Toledo, #21 Houston, #25 Temple

Difference: -1 ranked teams, -4 total rank (assumes Houston would have been #26 in the CFP)

2014

CFP: no teams ranked
AP: #18 Marshall, #22 Colorado State

Difference: -2 ranked teams, -13 total rank (assumes Marshall and CSU would have been #26 and #27 in the CFP)

I still think Bama has a shot to get in the playoff but Ohio State or Clemson would have to lose their final regular season game. I wouldn't be betting on that happening though, even though both are on the road.

Is there a limit to how many at-large teams any conference can have for the New Year's Six?

If not, I'm giving all to SEC and here are my wild-a&& guess for the big bowl matchups? Let's see how wrong I can be:

CFPSF1 : #1 LSU, 13-0 v. #4 Utah, 12-1 @ Atlanta
CFPSF2: #2 OSU, 13-0 v. #3 13-0 Clemson @ Glendale (I think LSU jumps OSU with win next week and can't put #2 OSU with a home disadvantage in ATL (v. Clemson [or Georgia])

Rose: Oregon v. PSU
Sugar: #6 Georgia v. #5 Oklahoma
Cotton: Alabama v. Boise (Cincy revenges Memphis next week)
Orange: Florida v. Notre Dame/UVA

Citrus: Auburn v. Michigan
Outback: TAMU v.Minnesota
Gator: UVA/ND v. Kentucky
Alamo: Baylor v. USC
Holiday: Iowa v. Washington

Birmingham: Missouri v. Memphis
Military: Wake v. Cincinnati
Music City: Louisville v. Tennessee
Belk: Miss St. v. UNC

Unfortunately an 4 loss unranked UVa team will go to the Orange Bowl.

Also i think whichever of Boise/Memphis survives ends up in Cotton, not sure if that is locked in, but it sure seems like everything said and written about it has the non P5 team going there.

I know they'll drop out of it after getting smacked around this week, but I'd still love to see Minny get one of the big bowls, just because it is a much better story, than if Penn St (who Minny beat) , or Wiscy (who beat Minny but will likely pick up another really ugly loss to OSU next weekend)

If Cincinnati beats Memphis, they deserve the Cotton Bowl spot. Doubt they'll get it, but you can't hold SOS against the American when comparing them to the P5 but also not take SOS into account when comparing them against the G5.

The Land of Fist Pumps
LSU (-11) vs Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl
Clemson (-2) vs Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl

Hammer the hell out of LSU and Clemson as those numbers are only going to go up.

Cross posting from gamthread but I don't like how ESPN dedicates 3 hours for 4 hours and 1 hour for the rest.

Bear says LSU opened up as -10 at Caesars so it already moved.

Can someone confirm or deny that you can't have more than 3 teams from 1 conference in the top 6 bowls?

Michigan-Bama in Citrus Bowl.

According to Herbie, possible that only players that are returning next year will be playing.

Really happy LSU got to #1, they deserve it. Call me cynical, but I am convinced the committee swapped LSU and OSU 2 weeks ago strictly for tv ratings. Just to add buzz, and make sure people would tune in to see what the final rankings would be.

I wish it was someone else other than Florida in the Orange Bowl. Florida has a very good defense, but their offense isn't very good. I really wanted to see someone beat UVA by about 60 in that bowl, just to call attention to the fact that Virginia has absolutely no business being in that game. There needs to be a rule that if a league doesn't have a top 15, maybe top 20 team available, they forfeit their bowl tie in.

Yep. And if the rule was you need to be Top 20 or Top 15, UVA would have been ranked 20 or 15.

Is there a way to see what the rankings would have been with the BCS computer?
