This defense continues to be unreal. Darnold thought he could see holes in Pats D but saw ghosts instead. BB tried to give Gase a break and got an all-time Belichick moment instead. It could mean only one thing.

It's Game Ball Time!

Not sure who it is on NFL Network, but he's saying teams could beat NE because Brady hasn't had one of those "Aaron Rodgers games"...

The scariest thing is this Jets offense is actually fairly capable. Holy shit.

This D is insane. 7 weeks and 3 TD allowed? That is absurd.

Gaze, for deferring. Once the Patriots got ahead, the Jets had to put the ball in Darnold’s hands and play to the strength of the defense. The Jets need to establish the run and make it so the defensive line doesn’t know whether to step forward or backward. That’s why Bell’s running is so effective.

Once the Patriots got the jump they just pinned their ears back and decided if that meant some 5 to 8 yard runs, who cares.

This feels different from 07 because in 07 the offense would beat the shit out of you, but the defense was just okay. A great D > a great O IMO.

Yup. Forget the competition this is nuts.
I just don't think you can. Darnold looked like he had never played Quarterback. None of those picks were weird tip drill plays - he just failed to identify cover zero over and over and threw over the middle falling backwards repeatedly.

I understand that it's hard to do the things they are doing. But the competition tonight was *dreadful*.

Hightower is talking on ESPN after the game and a question was posed about how different it is without a DC and how much more BB is involved in the defense. And he said BB has always been involved but now there’s fewer coaches so the messages are clearer and the plan is clearer. I remember reading an article a few years ago that the patriots had the fewest members of the coaching staff of any team and BB’s philosophy was that cutting down the layers of communication from HC to player basically reduced the noise. That is, the message was clearer the closer it was the the source.

So game ball to BB for reducing the noise with the defense.

Sure but last week he looked great. At some point you have to say they have something special going on here.

Meyers, who’s getting more and more trustworthy in Brady’s eyes, and who catches everything.

Elandon, who paved the way (ish) for an LB in his first action as an FB.

BOOGEYMEN D. Swarming, playmaking, smart, athletic. Heaven to watch.

TB12. Edelman’s drop on the long pass make the solid stats look less-than, but I actually thought the offense this week looked more fluid than last, and despite slightly lesser numbers than he put up against the G men, Brady played better tonight.

Insert-own-ghosts-joke here.

Yes, because the Pats had pressure in his face all game.

Sam Darnold is an above average NFL QB that just got completely and utterly dismantled at home. That Jets team out there tonight is a 7-8 win team over the course of a season, which was derailed early with Darnold’s mono.

The Edelman drop, the Michel drop, and the grab on Meyers by the DB after he toasted him---Brady was close to something like 33/45 for 350.

Honorable mentions to Slate for the fumble recovery, and newcomer Tomlinson, who was used as an in line blocker AND fullback AND receiver on one play - enough action to suggest BB likes him so far

Pats now leading the league both in points (223, Ravens second at 214) and in points allowed (48, San Fran second at 64).
The points scored are a bit skewed, since some teams already had their bye and with that one game less to score points. Which obviously makes the Pats defense even more impressive, since the 49ers played one less game while allowing 33% more points.

The Jets' OL is injured and gave up unpressured blocks all night long. Coaching & talent mismatch combined I think, and had to do a lot with Darnold's play.

Brady, for putting up points on a creditable defense with a cast of randoms around him. You could see his determination to get the offense untracked early. He looked like an intense dad ordering everyone into the family station wagon to hit the road early.

honorable mention to ben watson for at least being a tight end on the field that brady has confidence in to throw him the ball in a big spot, absent the doink off the helmet he didn't look cooked

Meyers deserves some additional love for some excellent blocking.

Honorable mentions to Meyers, and Edelman for being Edelman, and Ben Watson for once again showing he can be a reliable target.

Defensive coordinator Belichick gets my game ball. The defensive strategy he set had the Jets QB rattled all night.

Darnold gets honorable mention. He played a big part in handing the Patriots the W.

Honorable mention: The O Line. They didn't do much for the run game, but they protected the QB better than they had in past games this year.

TGG is fucking awesome this morning for anyone interested in a little Jets schadenfreude. There are too many threads to even link to, including one started over the weekend wondering if the Pats are overrated, and another started today that states that the Eagles are the only team standing between the Pats and 16-0. I have a shitload of work to do this morning, but fuck it.

Yeah. This game reminded me a bit of the prime time game against the Colts in 2014 where Jonas Gray went nuts. Belichick sees something and then coaches them up to go after it hard and the other team just has zero ability to adjust.

Cover zero is a very rare defense. I read an article that the Patriots used it 75 times last year but the next highest team was the Browns at 35. So, it’s like a once per game thing for most of the NFL. Bill just doesn’t think that way. He has the secondary to play it and clearly they were coached last night to be handsy and risk a defensive holding or pass interference here or there to compensate for having no safety help.

The stats on things the Patriots do are really telling. They run more fullback plays than anyone. Last night they probably ran a defense scheme more snaps than most other teams will run it all year. Bill will go all in. It’s a luxury other teams don’t often have.
