The end zone ref definitely did not see him out at the 3. He was getting ready to rule a touchdown before the other ref (who couldn't see anything) changed his mind.

I hate to quote myself, but the worst part of this is the line judge coming in from the 10 is the one to say Harry stepped out of bounds, and then waves his arms to rule him down on the field, but is absolutely not marking the spot where Harry potentially stepped out of bounds. He's just backpedaling away and marking him down. Fucking ridiculous.

But the league changed the rules because the refs have been so bad. They are supposed to call plays so that they can rely on replay. On the two most critical plays of the game, not only did the refs make the wrong call, but they abandoned the process they are supposed to follow. That’s inexcusable.
This is right - the refs can’t do their jobs to such a degree that the league has to change the rules to accommodate their shittiness.

As much as I hate replay, the next logical step is to make all POSSIBLE scoring plays automatically reviewed -i.e., automatically review any play where a touchdown hangs in the balance. That would at least solve instances like the Harry play and would remove having to instruct the refs to call possible scoring plays a certain way so they’ll be automatically reviewed.

Disgraceful performance by the officials....embarrassed themselves. How does Boger still have a job?!?

Offensive line
Meyers
Referees

The offensive line is beyond terrible this year, they can't pass protect, they can't run block, they can't even block effectively on field goal attempts.

The referees were bad, historically, epically bad, but on the drive where they blew the Harry TD, Meyers dropped an easy TD in the end zone, which would have made the blown Harry call a non issue.

Brady has taken heat this year for having an off year, but if he has virtually no running game, no time to throw and outside of Edelman few other competent targets, not sure what he can do to overcome all of that.

Having the booth review "all scoring plays" should be exactly that. It was a scoring play and obviously the booth could see it. It's a logic fail that the booth can't step in when the guys on the field screw up (which happens so often that they created this rule in the first place). A scoring play should be a scoring play, period.

Let us not forget the full shit sandwich that led up to the Harry non-TD.

First, the refs give Watkins an outrageously bad spot on 3rd and 6. There is a chance that he got the first down, but there is no way he got to the 40 like where the ball was spotted. At the very least, you say the Pats won the challenge, you re-spot the ball and then measure to see if they actually got the first. Instead, they say that he did in fact, get to the 40 and the Pats lose one of their challenges and a timeout.

Second, the refs totally fuck up the Kelce fumble by ruling him down; so the Pats are forced to use their remaining challenge to get the ball back. Since the refs fucked up the first challenge and blew the Kelce call, forcing BB to use his last challenge, there are no more challenges.

Then the refs fuck up the Harry TD, and because they had fucked the two previous calls (plus determining that the first challenge was unsuccessful) the Pats can't even challenge.

So to recap, the referees were so incompetent that they managed to remove all of the safety nets the league has set up to protect the game from referee incompetence.

Alternatively, the end zone ref is walking up saying, "I got him out at the three. What did you see?"

If the ref standing 3 yards away cant see Harry’s foot was 4 inches in bounds then he needs to see an eye doc and not be in this league. It wasnt even one of those ‘was in he in by 3 blades of grass’, he was well in the field of play.

The o line sucked. Kc was in Brady’s face all day.O line is the kryptonite for Any sb aspirations

The D was weak in the first half (one short field) but returned to form in the second.

But these refs were royally fucking atrocious.
-Harry td
-Kelce fumble
-Bad spot ( the challenge is for the spot not the first down. Bb should win the challenge but kc could still get a first down. Re spot and remeasure). Plus kelce’s pick.
-Plus blowing the plays dead when instructed not to do so.
-No dpi on dorsett where he was bear hugged
-The weird ‘hold’ where a pats d line barely grabbed a kc o line shoulder on a screen
-A different d line hold That was not replayed on a running play!

Pats did benefit from some holding and DPI yes, and may have gotten away with some
Too.

In the end, Pats sucked in the first and dominated in the second half.
Refs were shitty all around but egregiously so against the Pats.

Not sure what Michel can really do behind that line.
This is true to a large extent but as others have said, if you are a first-round caliber RB you should be able to at least occasionally make plays even where you don’t get great blocking from the OL (either due to elusiveness or due to sheer strength/power).

Michel has had some nice runs here and there but those have been instances where the OL gets some push - I can’t think of a single time where I’ve thought “wow, Sony made something out of nothing there” this season.

How did the other official not see Harry cross the goal line?
Not relevant. Effectively he never crossed the goal line if he's ruled out of bounds at the three.

Here's what Boger said, per PFT with emphasis added:

“What led to it was the covering official on the wing was blocked out by defenders,” Boger said. “The downfield official who was on the goal line and looking back toward the field of play had that he stepped out at the three-yard line. So, they got together and conferred on that. The final ruling was that he was out of bounds at the three-yard line.”

It’s even worse that he didn’t see he was in bounds as he cant say he was blocked by the defenders behind Harry.

The crew was soooo bad, it is fair to point out that they blew what should have been a personal foul on Hightower when he shoved Mahomes out of bounds. And they blew a couple calls on the Chiefs in the first half. Obviously the most egregious ones went against the Pats, but they were fire-them-from-the-league awful all around.

Football Zebras wrote an article and it’s pretty damning. In addition to the plays talked about, they missed some against the Chiefs and also incorrectly marked off 5 yards instead of 10 on an illegal hands to the face on Tardiff. Clown show.

The pool report is beyond insane.

They both had him out of bounds, and they had him short of the goalline if you re-read what Boger said in the pool report.

They fucked up both ends of the play.

It's maddening.

??? if he's judged out of bounds, by definition he's not breaking the plane of the end zone. It's a colossal screw-up, but it is one screw-up

It’s actually even worse. They also initially called the Meyers non-catch a TD, with some of the brief celebration/confusion contributing to the Pats having to burn a timeout to prevent DoG. The sequence beginning with the bad spot was one of the single most colossal and varied series of fuckups you’ll ever see by one crew.

Edit: Marking off the wrong yardage of a penalty is probably the most egregious mistake, in a sense. Total and utter misapplication of a simple rule. This crew should not touch another relevant game this season but I am sure they will be back in prime time sooner than later.

Then Watkins threw Gilmore out of bounds and threw a half hearted punch, too. And it wasn't called. The refs were beyond bad yesterday. Historically bad, multiple game changing calls that they got completely wrong in every day.

The offensive line. KC's defense is middle of the pack to poor (15th in dvoa), and the line looked like a turnstile. I shudder to think what Buf's D is going to do.

Hard to judge Michel or Brady when the line's so craptastic.

The hold on the screen was legitimate if maybe tricky tack, the DL( I forget who it was) was out of position when he realized it was a screen so he grabbed the OL to try keep him from blocking someone else. The worst part about that play was it was already blown up and the ball was thrown in to the ground.
Holds against DLs on running plays are a real thing. They usually happen when the guy is double teamed and the DL grabs one of the guys to keep him off of a LB. Granted they didn’t replay this one so we have no idea if it was a correct call.

I was wondering about the hands to the face penalty, I was surprised to see it was only a 5 yarder as I thought(corectly) it was similar to holding.
Surprised BB let them get away with that.

Harder to judge Brady than Michel. Michel hits the ground at the moment of first contact. He's 20th in the league in yards after contact. He's not great, he's merely serviceable. In the NFL, where you can always find running backs, throwing away a first round pick on Michel was a waste.

Michel looks bad to the eye and by the numbers.

And then the cherry on the shit sundae is even if the Pats got the extra challenge for Harry's play, they'd still need a non-existent 4th challenge to overturn that uncalled DPI on Dorsett. GJGE zebras.

Looks like we picked the wrong Georgia RB. Chubb is running behind an equally crappy OL and has nearly 1300 yards and he can actually catch passes. Michel earned his contract last year but you get the feeling that like 30 RBs could have done what he did behind that OL and blocking.

Sucks that Wynn may merely be league average if that. The left side of the line was supposed to be a strength and while Thuney continues to play strong Wynn was schooled by Frank Clark, who is a very good player but still that was an atrocious performance by him. It does appear that both Cannon and Mason are held together by duct-tape and glue at this point. CIN is playing well on D, esp the D-Line. Sunday is not going to be easy unless CIN turns it over a few times which is certainly possible.

Play calling on first down in the red zone was absolutely horrific. After the Harry debacle, the Pats needed to call a timeout...instead they lost almost four yards, setting themselves up in a difficult situation with that offense. On the last drive after the Brady run, they proceed to lose two yards on first down...just terrible. The refs were atrocious, probably the worst officiated game I have ever seen (including the Ravens / replacement ref game) but the Pats offense is pathetic and play calling is not helping.

They blew some calls both ways, but that play with Hightower was not a personal foul. He shoved the QB while he was still inbounds and could have turned upfield.

Looked like they may have found something on offense in the 2nd half. Given it shouldn't change anything in the standings - I'm walking away from this one with positives. The defense looked great against a very good offense. The offense may have turned a corner. They have a scrimmage next week to test out their potential changes and the team is going to be united with a massive chip on their shoulder after this one.

Plus Harry did something positive.
They also found something on defense in the 2nd half as well.

I feel ok about this one. They played like crap for a half and were still right in it against a good team at the end. They didn't quit. They adapted. This team may not be great, but they battle- the McCourty forcing the Kelce fumble is right in that vein.

However, in the spirit of the thread, I make Jonathan Jones my goat. I'm not sure what the heck he was doing giving up coverage on that long TD. He's been great most of the season, but that play was uncharacteristic for him.

100% on the refs. While of course the Pats could have played better in the first half, this game was handed to the Chiefs by Jerome Bogar and his crew. Full stop. Period. End of story.

A very simple change to make to the rules would be that plays that become scoring plays can be reviewed--Harry's play for example. This isn't hard.

The NFL makes such an effort to get things right, they get them wrong. Rules, behind rules, about challenges, result in messed up calls, lost challenges and time outs, and then unchallengeable plays LITERALLY because the refs messed up and took future challenges away. It's a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in Boger's gob.

That rejected challenge of the spot, which was clearly a wrong decision, led to a cascade of debales where the Patriots were on the brutally wrong side of 4 game changing non calls or incorrect calls.

Rules on rules lead to no rules and anarchy. The NFL fucking sucks. Yesterday was an atrocity of officiating and it pilfered a potential win for the Patriots.

Yep it really is stupid that the plays are only automatically reviewed if the ref doesn't call it dead first. Just make all potential turnovers and potential scoring plays up to the booth. In exchange give coaches just one challenge that they get to keep until they lose a challenge. If all turnovers/ scoring plays are auto reviewed it dramatically reduces the need for challenges.

I'll be a bit surprised if this isn't addressed in the off- season.

So Michel's first 16 games in the league where he accumulated 1200 yards and played a crucial role in leading the Pats to a SB win are just going to be ignored because of yesterday's game?

Come on now.

If you want the fairest solution, just use what they do in college football - any play with any hint of controversy goes straight to the booth for review, period. Of course, the games would probably last for three-and-a-half hours on average, so that won't happen until someone can convince the NFL that this is an opportunity to generate additional revenue. (Which it would be, but perhaps at the cost of making the product slightly less attractive to the average viewer.)

No, he's being reviewed for the entire 2019 season, which has been a pretty bad disaster.

Michel YTD. 189 carries, 653 yards, and EXTREMELY impressive 3.5 yards per carry. But hey, he's got 10 receptions, which is 3 more than last year. So he's a dual threat.
