By NFL rules, if the receiver has completed the catch, he's not considered defenseless.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying what their definition is. In other words, if that's a fumble, he's no longer defenseless.
But, didn't he take a head shot?

Targeting means leading with the head. Shoulder to head of runner/receiver isn't covered. There's 2 different things:

Defenseless--does not apply because he was establish runner
Targeting--does not apply because it wasn't with helmet

I didn't think he was defenseless, but I thought a shot to the head, shoulder or not, would be unnecessary roughness. ... Oh well, I didn't realize that as long as you don't target, you can hit a guy in the head as hard as possible

I hate the 'late hit out of bounds' flag when the ballcarrier is still trying to gain yardage and the contact is made in bounds.

I wasn't listening to the ref, but was it the location or helmet to helmet?
