If Tom Brady (42 years old when season starts) completes a pass to Ben Watson (38, will turn 39 in December) this season, would that set the record for the oldest age total for a passer/receiver?

(Amusing, until I tried looking up other contenders, I hadn't realized Pro Football Reference listed Flutie in his age 43 season with the Patriots as a kicker)

Edit: there was Gannon/Rice for the 2001-2004 Raiders, which in 2004 would have put them at 39 and 42 years respectively, but need to check if there was indeed a Gannon-Rice pass in 2004

Edit #2: Yes, there were at least two such passes, in this Steelers-Raiders game. At that point, Gannon was 38 (his birthday was in December) and Rice was 41, one month from his 42nd birthday. Which means a Brady/Watson pass this year would beat at least that combo out.

Can’t find the video but I was always partial to Watson’s 63 yarder against Jacksonville in ‘06. It was 3rd and long and the pass was basically a dump off IIRC and he shook a man off his back and proceeded to beat everyone down the sideline for the score.

My first thought was Vinny Testaverde. It looks like on 11/18/07 he threw a TD pass to Christian Fauria. Pro Football Reference has Testaverde as age 44.005 for that game and Fauria age 36.057. So Brady/Watson would have them beat.

For those in the “Gronk is coming back in December” camp, does this affect your thinking?

I don't view it as a Patriots desire to have Gronk back, but Gronk missing being around the team/playing every day come the fall. Maybe marginally it impacts someone like Brady/Edelman calling Gronk to try to lobby him to come back? But overall, this doesn't change much. As long as Gronk stays in game shape and the team is doing well, I feel like there will be some smoke come October. If we don't hear from Gronk between now and then the odds have to decrease, but him doing promo adds for the Draft with Julian give me some hope.

Edit - obvious caveat that we have no idea what to expect.

I'm not one of those people, but I doubt it makes any difference. If the best TE in NFL history wants to sign a deal mid-season Bill will find a way to make it happen, but won't plan around it either.

Maybe something involving Warren Moon?

I'd be curious to hear any impressions about Ben Watson as a blocker in the past 2 or so years of his career. Part of me wonders if this move is really about bringing in a veteran guy to play next to Isaiah Wynn that can be trusted to at least make the right read, pick up the right guy, etc...
Everyone is penciling in what is essentially a rookie as the starting left tackle. There may be value in having a veteran guy who isn't going to be easily fooled by a defense to his left at times as he gets up to speed/comes back from injury.

George Blanda is also out, at least from a look at just his last season (age 48). He completed a pass to 31 year old Pete Banaszak on 12/21/75 when KC visited Oakland but Brady and Watson would have that beat.

I love the Watson signing unconditionally. One of my favorite Pats players ever. Glad to see him have a chance for a 2nd ring and be part of the group to attempt to "replace" my #1.

This has to be posted.

Another big guy (HT The Athletic and Phil Perry) 6'2"+ 200+.

He has the athletic testing and size to suggest he should be able to play inside and out. Keep loading up, Bill, one of these guys ought to be serviceable enough. Might even luck into 3-4 quality receivers this year.

I saw somewhere on twitter that this is the answer, now that I think about it I think it was the EEI account with the obvious Fauria connection.

Love the Watson signing and hope that he sticks.

Here's the highlights of my favorite Ben Watson game ever. I had forgotten that it had a somewhat scary Miami Miracle type finish.

Brady’s 2nd TD pass to Watson in that game for the winning score was absolutely perfect. Watson was well covered and Brady threw it to the place where only Watson could get it. Hope to see a few more like that in the coming season.

And it was set up by probably the cleanest pocket you'll ever see in the red zone.

That 3-cone doesn't look right to me. I couldn't find another contemporaneous report, but was reminded during my search that old friend Ras-I Dowling also participated in that pro day.

Man. If only they had called that Watson play correctly as a touchback, Steelers still have 5 and Brady has 7. (Yes i realize lots of other things happened that game, shh).

Wasnt that the post stroke Bruschi year too?

if they call that play correctly, we probably still lose that game. If we don't, we're facing the best Steelers team of the Roethlisberger era, still coached by Cowher, on the road. If we beat them, we get the 13-3 Seahawks, and probably not the same favorable whistle that handed it to the Stillers.

2005 is not a year I look back on thinking "man, if only". I wish they'd have called that play correctly for Ben Watson's sake, not because of our franchise's destiny.

Blasphemy. The Patriots remain undefeated in hypothetical games never played

The Steelers were a 6 seed. We would have played them at home.

I wonder if PI becoming reviewable factors into their strategy here. Bigger bodied receivers (Gronk for example) tend to draw a lot of contact when fighting for the ball.

I wonder if its simpler than that. Defenses -- especially at LB and DB -- are trending faster and smaller.

Rapaport just tweeted that the Patriots are in talks with Jamie Collins about a return to the team.
If this ends up being a cheap deal with little ramifications if he gets cut, I like the idea. Maybe he's more coachable this time around.

This feels like a bit of hazing/testing for Mayo. "Welcome to coaching - figure out how to make Collins a useful player again. Good luck."

They were talking about his very thing on the radio today. Zolak said Mayo’s main responsibility will be inside linebackers so he wouldn’t be directly coaching Collins
