They were awarded four comp picks, so here's what they're looking at:

1st Round: Own selection.

2nd Round: Bears (56th overall); Own selection.

3rd Round: Lions (72nd overall); Compensatory pick (Solder); Compensatory pick (Butler).

4th Round: Own selection.

5th Round: Compensatory pick (Amendola)

6th Round: None.

7th Round: Browns (Josh Gordon trade); Eagles (draft pick swap from 2018); Own selection; Compensatory pick (Flleming)

That's a lot of ammo for them. I assume it means lots of movement up, down, and out of the draft.

I want Christian Wilkins. If he stays in the teens/low 20s, use a 2nd rounder to move up and get him. Such a disruptive player.

Comp picks can now be traded, right? (Didn’t they change that rule recently?)
As for their own selections, is their draft slot 26th or 27th in each round unless they make it to the Super Bowl? Or are all the playoff teams’ picks re-ordered based on playoff results?

Hopefully they turn those 3rds into either 4ths or 2nds.
Their draft history in the 3rd rd is quite poor. Since 2013 Thuney/Harmon/Logan Ryan are about the only hits compared to Shaq Mason, Flowers, James White all in the 4th.

comp picks can be traded.

picks are adjusted based on post season performance. the super bowl winner gets the 32nd pick. super bowl loser gets the 31st pick.

What do you think the league-wide hit rate in the 3rd round is?

My unscientific research (looking at the last 5yrs third round picks) leads me to believe it is around 25-30% though 2017 you can easily argue the 3rd rd was more productive than the 2nd rd. Kamara, Shaq Griffin, James Conner, Golladay, Ogunjobi, Anzalone, Cooper Kupp. Chris Godwin, (Kareem Hunt)

So with this context (and the numbers from @dynomite ), going 3 for 8 since 2013 is a tick better than par for the course, especially when you consider that many of NE's picks are late 3rds / comp selections. They are on a pretty good run of fourth-round success, as you note, but that strikes me as more of an oddity than anything (draft results in general are SSS and parsing finer to certain positions / rounds just amplifies the noise).

I’ve posted this in other threads but it belongs here too. This class has depth at TE, WR, and DL/Edge. I’m especially excited about the tight ends. TJ Hockenson is a guy I really like for them. He is a double threat as a blocker and receiver and with their emphasis on the run and perhaps replacing Gronk he would be the rare breed to have that kind of upside. Two caveats: he hasn’t declared yet and we don’t know his athletic testing.

Pats really nailed the comp picks. Two 3rds (and tons of cap space) for players they didn’t really miss this year.

At this point, the only positions i don’t want to see them draft early are RB & OL. Pretty much everywhere else could use an upgrade.

RB? Total agreement. OL? Not so sure. Cannon is going to be 31 next year. We don’t know what happens with Trent Brown or if Wynn is a guard or a tackle yet. Indicators were that he was on track to be a tackle before the injury. Depending on what they do at LT I wouldn’t rule out a high pick there. Same as last year essentially.

Wynn is also coming back from a very serious injury so there is additional injury risk with him. Have there been any reports on him? I’m assuming/hoping he’ll be ready to go by training camp.

Yea they definitely need to go the 98 Broncos route and build around the last few years of effective Brady. They seemed to have gotten the RB down, and (assuming they can Bring Brown Back and Wynn comes back as advertised) the Line.
Time to builld on Defense. The McCourtys are getting up there and non of the young kids on the line are doing much to help Flowers. And thats not even getting into the LBs and Hightower who is probably next to see a marked decline moving forward.
With 2 of those first 3 picks they need a couple athletic LBs and or a DE. With the 3rd a DL "Stud" or close as they can get.
Safety help in rounds 3 or 4. Fill in with a TE, WR and QB they really like and can groom.

Mostly agreed but would focus on the front 7 and a TE early. The McCourty's are getting up there but they both played quite well this year and don't seem to be showing to slow down yet, so if focus is on optimizing next few years (a la Broncos) fill biggest gaps. First is LB, second is DL, third is probably either WR or TE (depending on what the real deal is with Gronk, if he's hurt or just toast). The secondary has been the best unit on the team, IMO.

There is so much front 7 talent in this draft that I'll be pretty disappointed if we don't nab one early. There's no guarantee that Flowers is kept. We really need some bodies there.

Brady will need targets. Jules and Gronk are approaching the end. There’s not much past them.
My sense is that the early picks (first two rounds) will be TE, WR, and DL (not necessarily in that order. S and LB will be middle round picks.

I actually think Murray goes in the 1st and if Brady isn't going to be around after 2019, I'd be good with the Patriots picking Murray to be the heir apparent. Yes, he's very small. Yes, passing from the pocket at 5'9"-ish is going to be an issue in the NFL. However, he has a big arm, he's very accurate, he can read a defense and he can obviously make plays with his feet. With the new QB protections, I'm not as concerned with him holding up physically (as long as he's smart when leaving the pocket). He's a fascinating propsect; I'm a big Haskins fan (he's my QB1 - even had Herbert left Oregon), but in the right scheme/right coaching, Murray could end up being special.

So let's say that Kyler Murray (whom some of you have brought up already) is available when the Patriots pick at the end of the 1st round.

Do you pick him there, knowing that there's not a high likelihood he lasts til your first 2nd round pick? Do you not pick him because you think he's not going to be a good NFL QB, or because you're worried he might give up and go play baseball, or because you like the player, just not for your 1st round pick?

I can't imagine the league grinding its teeth if BB were to get his hands on Murray. Years 1 and 2 he could serve in a Swiss-Army-Knife sort of way and then take over QB full time when Brady retires.

If, that is, he's going to be a good NFL QB, which he might not be. Being, what, 5'9" tall won't exactly help.

So what do you say SoSH? Murray is available to the Pats for their 1st round pick...do you take him?

I don't see the Pats using this year's first round pick on such a long shot. In Murray's case, there are too many things that could go wrong, and too many immediate needs on the squad.

Not that it means anything - in fact, it means this is highly unlikely to happen - but Kiper mocked Duke QB Daniel Jones to the Pats in the first round. I've kind of been pumping his tires a bit this year to my dad and brother. I'd be pretty happy with the pick even if it doesn't address an immediate need.
