He signed a 2 year, $7M deal. $3.5M per season. Watson saves $2M. 10 games of Allen would cost right around $2M by this math. If the Pats want Allen they can get him.
If he's healthy he makes a lot of sense. I think he probably could be cheaper than that. But "coming off knee surgery" is a bit scary for a team that doesn't have enough cap space to make mistakes.

I love the sentiment but I bet Watson could earn a roster spot if he was willing to play for the vet minimum.
Perhaps Belichick is giving him a chance to inquire around the league and see if he can improve upon that.

Or maybe he really has nothing left in the tank, the PEDs were a last-ditch effort to get healthy or strong enough to compete on the field against players 15 years his junior, and there's nothing left for him here except testimonials to his 100-yard rundown and touchback.

Can you suggest an upgrade? Who do you want to replace? Do you not think Wynn is coming back? Not think he'll remain healthy?
No I can’t. Maybe there isn’t one. I assume Wynn is returning. Seems we have more than one hole. Would be good if his return slides
Everyone else back to a place they are much more comfortable and those holes shrink

I don't recall any notes from the local beat reporters about how Watson looked in camp. My assumption is that he didn't really stand out all that much; I looked through the Globe archives but did not see anything notable, beyond his concussion in game 3. His preseason stat line was 3 targets, 2 catches, 24 yards. But if anyone has any different recollections, it would be good to note.

I'm guessing there was a combination of a numbers crunch, cap crunch, and the fact that LaCosse and Izzo may very well give the team 90% of what Watson would give them at this stage of his career.

Few players have had much success after being released by the Pats. Anyway, too bad he couldn't have capped off a great career hoisting the Lombardi one final team in a Pats uniform.

And how exactly do we fit Gronk in under the cap?
If Gronk is the big move for the year, then they would have enough. A month or whatever of Gronk isn’t going to cost $10M. He’s also not coming back so not an issue we’ll have to resolve. More restructurings will obviously be needed if they make a splash at or before the deadline.

Here
Watson’s money will go to Emmanuel Sanders after he agrees to restructure with Denver. Pats will trade a 5th and get Sanders and a 7th rounder from Denver.

The deal will initially be reported as “Sanders for a 5th,” but we will later learn of the 7th coming back as well.

Just fyi.

The article is dated January of 2018. As the league hasn't done anything a season and half later, it seems unlikely Roger will impose any discipline. Given that it was a failed indictment, I have the feeling Bill and Bob will not lose any sleep over it.

Bill and Bob's. Anyone hungry?

Bedard continues to beat the drum that Develin will be quite capably replaced by Jakob Johnson, who did fine this past Sunday. If that pans out, then Harry and Wynn (barring other players on IR) are in line to be the returnees.

I think Harry is eligible to begin practicing on Monday, two weeks prior to eligibility for activation... something to keep an eye out for after Thursday's game.

Honestly, if they get Wynn and Harry back at full health, I'd be ecstatic. Any trades on top of that would just be gravy.

We've pretty much never seen what N'Keal can do, right? It seems like he was hurt very early - did he play at all in pre-season?

Due to when he was placed on IR, he had to be out 8 games, do we know how his injury timeline matched up with that? To put it another way, is he healthy now and getting up to speed on everything he needs to know so that in game 9 he's going to be a force, or is he going to be not practicing at all until game 9 (or later) and we should expect very little from him this season?

Yes, he played in preseason--in training camp in in some games.

He played a bit in the pre-season game against the Lions, making 2 catches. one great one on the sideline. The other was a good catch with some yards after contact. On one of those he tweaked something (hamstring, i think) and wasn't seen in game action again during the pre-season, although he did practice intermittently.
He is eligible to begin practicing next week so we should get some sort of idea when the injury report comes out next Wednesday.

There were rumors that Harry suffered a high ankle sprain at some point, but they were never really confirmed. If so, the recovery time seems about right for him to begin practicing next week. And he was seen working out on a separate practice field just this past week, so I would be surprised if he wasn't practicing next week.

FWIW, once he is practicing with the team, he officially becomes one of the team's two designated players, even though he would be ineligible to play until Week 9 game against the Ravens.

Is it just me or do there seem to be a lot less end-of-the-roster/practice squad juggling than in years gone by?

Ross Ventrone weeps at the thought.
I think it's because the roster is so deep right now the guys they're cutting and bringing in aren't practice squad eligible.

But it's a little surprising that they bough Jordan Richards back considering they have Obi (I had forgotten about him) on the PS. Seems like a similar skill set.
I don't think they think Obi is good on special teams. If he were, they could have activated him down the stretch.

He's a great athlete, so you'd think he'd work on ST, but he just isn't the kind of crazy man you want there. I watched some of the kickoff coverage from the preseason and Winovich and Crossen were flying down like wildmen while Obi just didn't seem to have that kind of urgency. One of the qualities I liked about Melifonwu coming out was he ran the alley while staying in control instead of just flying past dudes, but on ST you want more of that lack of regard for life and limb.

The other thing is that Richards' spot might only last until Ebner is healthy, and they don't want to keep jerking Obi around.

I hope Kraft isn’t just teasing us. Implying Gronk might come back and then leaving us hanging would be as frustrating as... well I can’t think of a good analogy, but it’d suck.
If Gronk came back and passed a drug test, it would seriously fuck up his CBD business.

If he hasn't retired isn't he still being drug tested? Wasn't this the issue with Watson, when he unretired he was immediately drug tested and knew he would fail.

Michael Bennett appears to be fifth on the interior linemen depth chart with Wise the latest to surpass him for snaps. I don’t believe that they are “saving” him. He’s too expensive for his current role but they would have to trade him to gain any significant cap space. I don’t think he’s long for this team.

Internally, the Patriots have sounded hopeful they could pry away Stefon Diggs from the Vikings, though that still has the appearance of an overly lofty goal.
If the price for Diggs is too steep or the Vikings prove unwilling to shop him, there’s a decent level of production in the next tier of potential targets: the Bengals’ A.J. Green, the Broncos’ Emmanuel Sanders, the Falcons’ Mohamed Sanu and maybe even the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald.
LARRY FITZGERALD!!!

Others mentioned: Agholor, Hurns, Cobb, and old friend Thomas.
