The B's came out flying in the first. In the second, they were terrible. They were pretty even in the third. I tried to find Shots and SOG by period for last night, but couldn't. For a home game in the SCF, that's not ideal.
Game summaries can always be found on the NHL site. 3rd period shots were 13 to 6 at even and 14 to 7 overall. I don't think they were terrible in the second on the whole. The 1st unit PP did not execute well and they struggled with entries at tune, but they still played very solid D and didn't give STL many good chances. It's being over critical to say they played bad, never mind terrible. Only 4 giveaways with 11 takeaways and 15 blocked shots, which were very close to the game 3 stats. The problem was that playing "good" isn't enough. They had capitalize on the chances they had and have a bounce or two go their way, which is what STL did (if you consider shitshow refereeing a 'bounce').

B's badly outshot and outchanced STL last night. They dominated the 1st period, played a poor 2nd and outplayed STL in the 3rd. It is the SCF, the other team is there for a reason but to say BOS played poor last night is not accurate. This to me ,was the first game all series the worse team won. Partly due to Binnington and some post luck and partly due to horrendous officiating.
100% this. They outplayed one of the best teams in the league, had some bad luck, and ran into a hot goalie. St Louis is a great team. The Bruins are a great team. I'm as apoplectic as anyone about last night but I can't criticize the Bruins here.

+1. It may say more about me that I let it affect my mood so much but I can usually move past a playoff loss. This has grown overnight in light of Berube’s trolling and other deliberately obtuse takes.

I’m more worked up over this than getting knocked out of the playoffs last year, or g6 Chicago.
Berube saying his is the least penalized team in the playoffs shows he does not understand the difference between penalties called vs penalties committed.

I guess their attitude/mindset is they can't call a penalty every time we commit one, so have at it and see what happens.

And yes, he's strait up trolling right now; image a dead from the neck up cementhead like him dictating how the officials call a game; a long standing, well respected coach I can see, but someone like him, I don't get it at all, they should have laughed his comments off, but instead, they took his comments as gospel and acted accordingly.

Losing to a more skilled/talented team like the Canadiens of the mid 70's, the Oilers of the late 1980's and the Blackhawks in 2013 I can take, losing to this pack of shitbags is totally unacceptable, the first two lines need to wake the fuck up pronto. put pucks to the net, jump on rebounds and force a game 7.

Overall, the Bruins dominated play. Binnington played well. And the Blues gameplan is to take offensive zone penalties to create scoring chances.

If Krejci doesn’t make a chest save, we’re talking about two goals the Refs gifted the Blues by not calling obvious offensive zone penalties.

It’s a joke. They’re professional athletes, playing at the highest level. This “don’t let the refs decide it” shit is fucking nonsense that we tell twelve year olds. Nobody “let” them decide anything. The refs and the league got punked by a Blues coach and team who play to injure, complain, and then dive.

Those things fucking happened, as did the shot, chance, and hit differential.

How many clean goals have the Blues scored all series? I’m talking not coming off a missed penalty or a stupid play/turnover.

Naturalstattrick.com has everything you need.

To respond. Bruins had 7 high dangers chances in the 3rd to the Blues 2. They had 27 shot attempts to 11 and 13 total scoring chances to 6. They dominated the first, were slightly outplayed in the second and dominated the third. XGF was 3.13 for the bruins and 1.58 for the blues. Domination. Both goals were scored on plays that should have been blown dead for obvious penalties. This was a robbery. I can't be rational.

I’ve been unable to get the Bruins out of my head all day. Here’s what frustrates me about this series to this point.

It’s not the cheap play by the Blues. There’s definitely chippiness there that is over the line, but whatever. Rather, it’s the fact that despite that, I actually feel like Boston has been in control of this series in almost every game except for Game 4, and they’ve let the Blues hang around with shitty giveaways in the defensive end despite the fact that St. Louis can’t generate any offense on their own.

Looks at almost every goal the Blues have scored and they’re the result of Bruins giveaways or failures to clear the puck like NHL defensemen should be able to. Game 4 was a clusterfuck where Boston was outplayed for a significant amount of the game, but I don’t feel like either of the other two losses fell into that category.

But I also don’t feel like there’s enough urgency or edge to how the Bruins are playing. St. Louis has a 3-2 lead and it’s been a close series but we haven’t played our best game yet - maybe Game 3 was close to that. But man, all I want to see is the Bruins bring what they’re capable of, because I feel like when they do, this isn’t a close contest. So I’m nervous heading into Sunday because I haven’t seen it yet, but this Bruins team has yet to disappoint this year when facing adversity. Something has to give.

As with everything, don’t read the comments on that tweet. The Boston hate is high with STL fans and basically everyone on there.

I would’ve rather had the major last night then the suspension today. So they lose one of their goons for a night. So what.

The Bruins need to adjust because they’re not going to call them all.
The Seahawks thought they'd beat the Patriots playing this way. It took a while, but they adjusted.

Hopefully, the Bruins do too.

Problem seems to be partly that they’re calling really soft stuff on the Bruins.
I agree but Cassidy’s message might need to be-
“They can’t call them all!”

I don’t know. After game 5, they ought to get some calls in six so if they come out very aggressive maybe they lose an edge they’d have. But, if this goes 7, they have to know how that game is going to be called. (no penalties)

In practice how does this work? The B's add more goonery / late hits, but the refs have demonstrated they are calling it tighter on the Bs? Is Pasta gonna start crushing people all of a sudden? Brad was half his cheeky self and got 2 min for nothing.
How do the Bs adjust to add more players when one of theirs is blatantly tripped and possibly concussed?

When we talk about athletes adjusting, it means they can't get beat down or hold onto it like us fans do. There is a point though where one team playing outside the defined parameters of the game receives a definite advantage.

I'm all aboard the Bs coming out and crushing game 6 and 7, using their superior skill. Refs just gotta call some shit evenly. LETS GO

I’m not necessarily talking about doing things different for 60 minutes, but the next time one of their dudes goes head hunting, they need to be marked and obliterated, or someone has to drop gloves. Thing is, I don’t know who on the Bruins is capable or inclined to do so - Chara is hurt. Backes maybe.

I’m not bloodthirsty and I don’t want this to be a violent game again, but there needs to be some deterrence.

When a Bruins player bumped into their goaltender, one of the Blues came up behind him and put him in a Samoa Joe sleeper hold and yanked him down to the ice. No call, of course.

But the Blues have hit Rask a bunch of times this series, and not once have the Bruins made the guy pay any kind of price at all.

Exactly. I commented on that in the game thread. It was Pietrangelo on Backes. But even that stuff, that taps on Rask, I’d let slide. Nobody’s getting hurt there. I’m talking about the head hunting stuff. That needs to be snuffed out.

Coyle is big, shredded, young, and playing for the hometown team. We obviously need him scoring goals, but if Butch tells him to take five and make them count, I have no doubt that he’ll be able to land enough to make it worth it. Past the Backes, “Headbutt his fist” thing, anyway.

I’d love to see him do it at home. But I’d like to see him break Maroon’s nose in St. Louis even more.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but you’re going fast on ice and carrying a stick, it’s not all that hard to inflict pain so long as you have the will and timing down. You don’t need to be Z or Cam to crumple someone.

And no doubt Coyle is strong, I think I saw his sister hang cleaning 135.

Hell, Lil Tory Krug has had the hardest hits of the series for the Bs. Coyle crushing someone would rile the crowd up for sure, and me on the couch too.

But really we dont have the Thornton guy to throw down. Big Z or Carlo dont seem the type. Can McQuaid come lay some hits?

He needs to drop the gloves instead of the other retaliatory stuff. It draws a line of demarcation. And it’s only five. The other shit can be too gray in interpretation and punishment.

Maroon’s the guy. In his house, retroactively wipe that smug, shit-eating grin from the matching penalty he goaded Chara into. Fuck that city and its avatar.

The problem is they’ve been almost calling none.

edit to add.. there's no way to prepare for penalties like the two egregious obvious penalties, that led to odd man rushes and a near goal and a goal, not being called. You've played with one set of rules your whole life..and even though they say to play to the whistle..sometimes you stop when you see something that obvious. The B's have had that happen at least three times this playoffs. I don't know how you just play through that.

I know these guys are physically and mentally better than me, but I never had the ability to eat shit and play by the rules while being abused while also maintaining the focus and aggression necessary to play my best. I wonder how much of the deference when hit illegally has carried over to the unwillingness to take shots and the sloppy passing and stickhandling.

Seems poetic if Coyle destroyed fake tough Maroon as Bos wins in 7.

Any chance that a blues player would fake dropping his gloves though and goad a b’s player into dropping his?

It could be a factor. Being forced by the officiating to play with a different set of rules than the other team can really screw things up for you mentally.

where I was last at
I'm no expert in hockey, but the Bruins aren't going to out-physical, out-tough, or out fight these guys

They'll get their ass kicked.

So take the hits as best you can, dish out a few in return, hope for the make-up calls you deserve, but more importantly the Bruins have to use their advantages which seems skill and speed, and a better goalie, and get the most out of those.

So they have outskate them and tire the goons out and pepper the goal with shots, and hope Tuker is fucking impermeable.

One thought on the suspension...
St. Louis can clinch and Barbashev is missing the game. Might the “fear” of missing a game 7 cause any of the Blues to hold up just a bit in game 6?
Pulling up on one or two hits could make the difference in a series that has been this close.
