Thanks for posting this. I particularly enjoyed the "Roast him? We play them this year, I'm not sure I want to roast him!" response.

Miguel Benzan had this on BSJ a few days ago:

Miguel, is it significant Brady has not received a contract extension? What is the hold-up?

Answer: It is not significant. The Patriots have been able to build the leading Super Bowl contender with Brady having a $27 million cap number. The hold up is most likely the length of the deal. My prediction remains Brady will be extended before 4 p.m. Saturday, September 7 — probably after Ernie Adamsdetermines how much cap space the Patriots need to have to operate during the regular season.
How much 2019 cap space could Pats realistically open up with a TB12 extension?

Answer: Four to five million. My guess on what will happen is that the Patriots will lower Brady’s cap number from $27 million to $22 million in an extension whose new money APY is $28 million. Jimmy Garoppolo‘s APY is $27.5 million.

Signing bonus: $30 million
Guaranteed money: $52 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $50 million
New money total: $84 million ($99 million over four years)
Contract length: Three-year extension
Average per year: $28 million

Apparently agreed to but terms not known

Edit: no source because it was a notification from NFL

Pats only had about $7.5m in cap space as of this morning, so I'm curious what ju-jitsu they do to lessen the cap hit.

Edit - looks like Miguel has some predictions, quoted above

Edited again: this is interesting:

Tom Brady’s two-year extension takes him through the 2021 season, but the deal will be adjusted each year he continues playing, per source. It will pay him $23 million this season - an $8 million boost over what he was scheduled to make.

The #Patriots and QB Tom Brady are in agreement on a 2-year deal worth $70M, source said, thru 2021. He gets $23M this year, then $30M and $32M in the following years — though both sides are amenable to adjusting it if the situations warrants. It’s essentially year-to-year.
Okay, that's silly. Why would the Patriots agree to that unless Brady is retiring at the end of the year and the extra 8M is a goodbye present. That's pretty close to what the franchise tag would be. Maybe you save a little bit, but not much.

The cap hit for the current season drops something like $4 million, which is pretty valuable to the Pats.

Because he's still really good.

But as mentioned upthread they aren't hurting for space right now and it means the hit would be well into the 30's in the other two years.

Unless the Patriots are working on a trade which would eat up most of that 7.5 mill...

I believe $7.5 milion available is a lower amount for this point in the season than previous years, but I can't find the data right now.

That figure doesn't include Gordon's $2 million if Goodell grants his reactivation request. The Pats also might want to reserve some space for an (unlikely) Gronk un-retirement. There will inevitably be some training camp cuts from other teams that the Pats will want to consider as well.

That 7.5M will disappear quickly.

Right now only the top 51 salaries count.

Subtract a million once you hit opening day and 53 guys are on the roster.

Anybody on IR? Their salaries now count too.

Replacing anyone that gets hurt in-season? Their salaries count.

Having a practice squad? That will cost around a million bucks.

7.5M is basically dust.

My recollection is that Miguel agrees with your concept but says that about $5M is needed for the things you lay out.
So this gives them about $7M to play with for some new acquisition(s). Figure that $2M goes to Gordon if he gets reinstated.

How far Brady is ahead of the next best guy in the playoffs....

Playoff wins: 30 (2nd place: Montana with 16)
Super Bowl appearances: 9 (2nd place: Elway with 5)
Super Bowl championships: 6 (2nd place: Montana, Bradshaw with 4)
Playoff passing yards: 11,179 (2nd place: Peyton, with 7,339)
Playoff passing TDs: 73 (2nd place: Montana, with 45)
Playoff game-winning drives: 13 (2nd place: Elway, with 6)
Playoff 4th quarter comebacks: 9 (2nd place: Montana, with 5)

Tom Brady is so far ahead of everyone else in terms of these playoff numbers it's ridiculous.

Tom Curran's descent into hot-take-iness is really starting to bun me out. Check out his article about the extension v. Reiss's. They both say the exact same thing, but Curran almost makes it sound like a bad thing.
Which is funny because this contract is the exact opposite. He gets an additional 8 mill this year and the following two years is pretty close to what the franchise tag would be.

Staking out terrain on ‘TB12 finishes his career elsewhere’ isn’t gonna be a profitable endeavor.
I haven't read Curran's piece, but Curran loves to harken back to Tom's dad talking about how Tom won't finish his career with the Pats.

From the great Sally Jenkins in today's WaPo:

"Of all of Brady’s time-defiant feats, maybe the most impressive one is his physical resilience over the past decade from the age of 32 onward: In nine of his past 10 seasons he has started all 16 games. The only thing that could keep him off a field was NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s tyrannical suspension in 2016. So laugh at Brady’s avocado-chia smoothies if you want, but his habits line up with everything scientists know about anti-aging and avoiding illnesses such as arthritis. "

Sally, with the exception of the season his knee got shredded, Brady has been playing 16 games since becoming the starting QB. She goes on to contradict her own opening by talking about Brady's ability to stave off mental fatigue and maintain competitive fire as being most important.

Here's The Athletic on Brady and the contract.

There's a bit of "we're not saying anything shady has been going on, but you know, it's....interesting.

https://theathletic.com/1116192/2019/08/04/league-execs-and-cap-experts-weigh-in-on-the-impact-of-tom-bradys-contract-history-with-the-pats/?source=dailyemail
One section talks all about how the Broncos got in cap trouble deferring money to Elway and Sharpe and then goes "But hey, we're not saying that's happening here." Then there's an update that the NFL has already come out and said that didn't happen here. The NFL said that in 2015. The article apparently had to be updated to get this 4 year old info in.

There’s no indication New England has done anything along the lines of what Denver did in the 1990s. It’s entirely possible Brady has simply pursued deals that worked well for both parties. (Update: In 2015, the league determined no violation occurred when the Patriots bought services through a company Brady owns near Gillette Stadium.)

Compare this with recent NFL analysts saying Brady is only the 8th best QB in the league. So he’s getting paid like it. Whatever.

Also, Brady has always valued rings over money. Drew Brees played it the other way, and guess what - he has fewer rings. Ditto for Rodgers.

The most relevant and prevalent opinions cited in the article credited coaching and the Patriots philosophy of having fewer outright stars and more middle class players. Steelers had lots of stars, decent coaching and top paid QB. Hasn’t worked out nearly as well as the Patriots.

Offseason nothingburger of a story. As I read it, the article was pretty even handed. Can’t wait for football to start (and for the offseason BS to end.)

If Brady truly believes he's on a 1-year deal and has to prove himself all over again, then he's got extra motivation to crush the NFL this season.

How does that get announced as a 3yr contract if it is automatically voided at the end of the league year?
Why not make it a 10yr contract at that point, seems silly and unnecessary. Hope this doesn't end up an unnecessary distraction.

Why would it be a distraction? Brady seems very happy with it, and the team seems very happy with it. The only people who will be distracted by it are the fans and media.

So this was 100% the Patriots asking for salary relief in exchange for committing to not tag him.
This sucks more than it did yesterday.

Not sure why it sucks.

The Pats pay out more money to Brady this year, but get to reduce Brady's cap number in exchange. And the limitation is that they cannot tag Brady, which was an unlikely occurrence regardless.

I think the "voidable" part of this contract needs a better explanation than what we've received so far from the peanut gallery of media trolls. The details of that clause are likely more complex than what's been reported.

I think the "voidable" part of this contract needs a better explanation than what we've received so far from the peanut gallery of media trolls. The details of that clause are likely more complex than what's been reported.

One day after finalizing a new contract that increases his pay by $8 million this season, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady acknowledged how the deal doesn't tie him to the franchise beyond the 2019 season.

"It's a unique situation I'm in -- 20th year with the same team, I'll be 42 years old. So pretty much uncharted territory for everybody," Brady said Monday after a joint practice between the Patriots and Lions. "I'm going to go out there and do the best I can this year and see what happens."

Brady's new contract is technically a two-year extension through the 2021 season, but 2020 and 2021 are void years, a source told ESPN's Field Yates. That is similar to the Saints' five-year extension with quarterback Drew Brees in 2016 that included three void years, which essentially made it a two-year deal.

Teams use void years for salary-cap purposes, although this is the first time the Patriots have ever done so.

So Brady and the Patriots will have to revisit negotiations before the end of the 2019 league year to extend the contract, and it is expected they will do so. The Patriots have agreed not to use the franchise tag on Brady, according to a source.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27327683/brady-age-tenure-put-uncharted-area
As others have said, it's hard to imagine what team can offer Brady a sufficiently enticing deal to stick it to the Pats and leave, but the chances of that happening are higher than 0%, which will give the talking heads something to yap about.

Edit: I should add that I guess this means Curran had it right all along, even if he didn't explicitly say so. I wonder if he knew this from a source but couldn't report it, or just made a good guess but didn't write it clearly.

It is a 1-year deal.

Sources: #Patriots QB Tom Brady’s new deal includes a provision that does not allow NE to franchise or transition tag him for the 2020 season. The final two years automatically void on the last day of the 2019 league year, but he cannot be tagged. Brady will be a free agent.

View: https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1158441849075298305
This doesn't make any sense. Why would the league allow a contract that give the Patriots cap savings this year, but the final two years are just fiction because they automatically void themselves?
