Those are cool numbers @BaseballJones and tell us what we know. Defense wins championships.
But..
Some part of Brady must want his life to be a bit easier. That would mean more weapons/resources allocated to Offense. All the more so now that he is older and "doing it all" or as you put it "Figuring it out" has to be more difficult. This is just human nature. While dispassionately he knows the Best way for the Patriots to Succeed is with a Great D, in his heart of hearts he wants a fun easy offense.

So while I am sure he wants to win Championships, he probably wants to win with offense too. At 42 with family pressure mounting and his health still good, does anyone begrudge him possibly thinking "I wish the Offense was elite and the defense was eh". And knowing its probably not gonna change quickly....does he mull leaving even more seriously.

Finally BB is a friggin savant so far ahead of us its not even funny. Your about (lets face it in the next year or 2) to lose your Frachise GOAT qb. So how do you replace him? You dont/cant. While everyone hand wrings about it ,You develop a kick ass elite Defense moving forward. Instead of spending money on a declining Brady (even if the decline is <5% and he is better then 75% of the other qbs) you spend it on what will be here moving forward and on what has a chance to improve. Sure you patch (Brown>>>>>>>>>Sanu) but at the end of the day you know this is a Defense team now and hope that Brady can hold the offense together for another year or so.

The offense the last month hasn’t been middling it has been bad. And I would place 70% or more on the O line honestly. It’s no one’s fault. Mason isn’t playing well possibly injured. Ditto Cannon. Playing with 3rd string center. Wynn missed 10 weeks. Thuney is the only bright spot. It is what it is.
That's how I see it. In terms of blocking they might well have survived Gronk's loss and one other bad thing. But Gronk, Andrews, Develin (and then Johnson), and Mason and Cannon look hurt, and Wynn looks good now, but missed all that time.
A lot about football has changed in the last 25 years, but I think Parcells's view that you have to build a team from the O and D lines out still holds true. They may not be sufficient, but they are necessary. The Patriots *might* be able to win anyway, but the bad 0-line play is the most-likely thing that will keep it from happening.

I think the only way this team wins (without adding a mythical not going to happen gamechanger piece) is if the OL gels enough that they give Brady time for his receivers to get open.

The game in Houston seemingly represented progress, but there was a step back this last week, possibly / probably due to Karras' injury.

He's frustrated this year because, as others have pointed out, the offense lately hasn't been "middling". It's been BAD.
Bad may be over selling it too. The season stats are skewed because of the first half of the season. I saw a stat (wish I could dig it up) but I believe it showed that since the second Jets game they are bottom 5 in many key offensive stats. It will be quite a challenge to get this offense to average given the current talent level.

Correct. Since week 8 or so they are like 26th or worse in a bunch of categories.

The offense being bad is definitely not strategic. They've used their last three first round picks on offense (Wynn, Michel, Harry), and for a variety of reasons they are getting very little out of those players.

Ideally, the offense and defense would both be great. But that's pretty rare to see.

Just points for/against rankings...
Baltimore: #1 points scored, #5 points allowed
New England: #8 points scored, #1 points allowed
Buffalo: #20 points scored, #2 points allowed
Kansas City: #4 points scored, #14 points allowed
Tennessee: #10 points scored, #9 points allowed
Houston: #11 points scored, #20 points allowed
Green Bay: #13 points scored, #13 points allowed
Minnesota: #7 points scored, #7 points allowed
New Orleans: #5 points scored, #17 points allowed
San Francisco: #2 points scored, #3 points allowed
Seattle: #6 points scored, #22 points allowed (man they're a LONG ways from their Legion of Boom days)
LA Rams: #12 points scored, #11 points allowed

So of this list, only two teams are top 5 in the NFL in both points scored and points allowed:
Baltimore: #1 points scored, #5 points allowed
San Francisco: #2 points scored, #3 points allowed

It's really really hard to consistently have both a great offense *and* a great defense. Also, part of NE's problem has been the frigging kicking game, which has been abysmal this year, obviously. I know kicking is down this season, but the Pats are 21-28 (75.0%) on FGs and 31-37 (83.8%) on PATs. Even if you forget the failed two-point conversions that had to be tried because of previous missed PATs, that's 27 points lost due to bad kicking. In contrast:

- Pats' opponents are 12-14 (85.7%) on FGs and 18-19 (94.7%) on PATs against NE this year.
- Rest of NFL *excluding NE kickers* are 80.7% on FGs and 93.9% on PATs.

So even in a down year, relative to the rest of the league, these kickers are costing the Patriots big-time.

Ferentz can’t move anyone or anything right now. It’s not fair to expect much from your 4th center (Schwenke retired) but he had a bad game. Wynn to me looked better than Newhouse but has struggled now two games in a row against good competition.

Wynn has struggled with every part of line play. He is having trouble recognizing loopers in the stunt game (HT Mark Schofield and Taylor Kyles), he isn’t getting enough push on running downs, and he is too passive in pass protection losing 1:1s. I think all of these are correctable. A lot of the 1:1 play is technical and mental errors. His hand placement needs to be more aggressive. In college he would latch on and the DL wasn’t going anywhere. He had the best hands of any OT in the draft. I keep waiting to see that in the NFL. The good news is he is more than athletic enough to play OT in my eyes. I don’t see his length as an issue either.

Quick edit: in the run game I’ve definitely seen flashes with him that impress me. I think right now Thuney and Wynn are better to run behind. They both have shown speed to get to the second level too. Wynn is making plays up the field in the run game that Newhouse couldn’t.

Look, I think to Nomario’s point that they wanted to be a different offense this year but without a TE who can block, and injuries to both FBs and the OL they lost what worked for them last year. An up tempo heavy offense can and will work against lighter defenses but they don’t have the guys on the roster to execute it.

The most concerning thing to me regarding Brady is the fact ticket prices for last home game seem to have gone up significantly the last 24 hours. Seems odd.

I mean, that's just a positive feedback system at work isn't it?

1. People write stories about Brady wanting to leave after this year.
2. Ticket prices increase in case it's Brady's last game as a Patriot.
3. People see ticket prices for the last home game increasing.
4. Go back to Step 1.

Week 16 has essentially been like a preseason game for them recently, sitting starters or guys with injuries etc, as they usually already have a bye locked up. This year there will be something to play for. Simple as that, don't lose sleep reading too much into it.

Edit: Week 17 obviously, sorry.

So looking at Brady's stats, he is 20th in passer rating this year. 28th in Yards Per Attempt and 29th in Completion Percentage.

His stats are pretty similar to 2013. There are other similarities too.
Brady's stats a handful of similar years to this...

2002 - 373-601 (62.1%), 3764 yds, 28 td, 14 int, 6.3 y/a, 85.7 rating - Pats 9-7, miss playoffs
2006 - 319-516 (61.8%), 3529 yds, 24 td, 12 int, 6.8 y/a, 87.9 rating - Pats 10-6, lose in divisional round
2004 - 288-474 (60.8%), 3692 yds, 28 td, 14 int, 7.8 y/a, 92.6 rating - Pats 14-2, win Super Bowl
2013 - 380-628 (60.5%), 4343 yds, 25 td, 11 int, 6.9 y/a, 87.3 rating - Pats 12-4, lose in AFCCG
2003 - 317-527 (60.2%), 3620 yds, 23 td, 12 int, 6.9 y/a, 85.9 rating - Pats 14-2, win Super Bowl
2019 - 331-551 (60.1%), 3565 yds, 21 td, 7 int, 6.7 y/a, 86.5 rating - Pats 11-3, and who knows

So it's not like we haven't been here before with Brady and the Patriots. And for the most part, those seasons turned out pretty good when all is said and done.

There’s no chance that if Brady goes to the Chargers Anthony Lynn is anywhere near that job, is there?

Putting aside the extreme bender I’d go on if it happened, I would actually find Brady playing for someone like Bruce Arians to be pretty interesting.

This, IMO, is all posturing for the contract. I believe he’ll be back in NE. It would be ridiculous and out of character for him to leave and essentially start over in a new offensive system. If he does, though, it’ll be fascinating to watch.

Seriously.

Has there been any — even one — comment by Brady himself that he is considering leaving or retiring at the end of this year?

Or has it all been (as it always is) conjured up by eyeball seeking mediots?

That’s exactly it. There’s no evidence that Brady is leaving. Nor is there any evidence that - contrary to what WEEI callers say - he’s looking to “get paid”. As in, he will stay only if he gets a huge deal. He’s NEVER had that as his M.O. Why should we expect that to change?

This is all just talk radio and message board fodder invented out of basically thin air.

This is correct.

Do not listen to sports talk radio or the ESPN talking heads TV shows. They are all fucking morons and/or clickbait whores.

Any post that starts with "they were just saying on Felger and Mazz" should get someone a timeout, imho.

The only real evidence (not that he's leaving, but that money may not be of no concern) is that his camp got the "no franchise" clause for next year in his last contract.

Has he ever been franchised?
I don't believe so. However, he asked for and received a no franchise clause in his last contract. It might not be about money as much as a desire not to go year-to-year, but whether that or money (or perhaps something else) his camp felt the need to ask for it.

Exactly--because if he only wants to get paid, then he knows there will be cuts elsewhere if Kraft pays him. And then the team suffers. Do we really think Brady is going to go for the money in his last season and suffer throwing to lesser players elsewhere?

Seems like we all agree. Perfect.

Just to throw some gas on these embers, if somehow they do manage to win it all this year, I wonder if Brady wouldn’t think “7 is good. I’m done.”

He’s not going anywhere. If you think he hasn’t looked good this year in a system he knows like the back of his hand, with White and Edelman playing pretty much every game, he’s not going someplace else with a new system and new players.

Well, what if he went somewhere to team up with some receivers he’d played with in college? They’d probably still have the old rapport and chemistry.
