I like the Nationals.

But I love Papi. He is in the you-have-to-smile-when-you-see-him hall of fame.

Just saw replay of Kendrick home run and his reaction to it. Seeing a life have his moment never disappoints

If I were a Houston fan in the stands I would be fucking beside myself right now. Maybe approaching 2003 ALCS grade inconsolable.
Um, they won it all in 2017. Get back to me if they fail to win another before the turn of the century.

That's great, but if we'd held a 2 run lead late in 2007 WS Game 7 and then it all went to the dogs, and we'd spent a grand so we could be there at a moment of great triumph, we'd all be fucking devastated too. I get that it wasn't one out away, or in extras, but that was pretty high up the pain scale, recent title or not. Not at the pinnacle of it, but pretty damn far up.

I thought the Nats would need 15-16 innings of premium bullpen in four wins if they were going to take the series, and I just didn’t see where it would come from. They only needed 11.1, Corbin giving them four and getting to use Guerra in a low leverage situation. They only gave up 3 runs in the wins, and just 2 in high lev, in the game they hung on to win 5-4. Here are the bullpen innings in the four wins.

Corbin 4.0
Rainey 1.1
Hudson 2.1
Doolittle 2.0
Rodney 1.0
Guerra 1.0

Stras going 8.1 was the key to this series to me. That he was able to do it in 104 pitches — against a team that sees so many pitches — was so enormous.

Looking at the TV coverage, it is nice that for all the (not necessarily untrue) stereotype of baseball fans being mostly white, there are tons of fans of all ethnicities partying in the streets of DC now

I feel like Eaton was totally overlooked in this competition. He was absolutely nails. Much closer call than people are crediting here.
yea him coming up big immediately makes that trade with it in the eyes of all nats fans. def some buyers remorse over the course of the season, but he came up big when it mattered

Really really cold.

Is he pissed that he didn’t get used tonight?
i totally forgot he wasnt on the WS winning team. he is almost definitely upset that he wasnt called in, especially after the bullpen completely blew the game.

Yep. I thought the same thing.

And hopefully this win will bring about a surge in interest in this team moving forward in the city.

My understanding from ownership is that we're all supposed to Stick To Sports.
Well then don’t diss the guy — that fought to bring the team here even though he’d gotten only a terrible TV deal shared with Peter Angelos, partly funded the stadium, ran the team at a loss for a while, still spends top dollar even though he looks out at half empty stadiums despite being consistent contenders for half a decade or more, and has massive local charities —because of the color of skin.

My next thought: how the heck did people know that a random Dick's Sporting Goods in Gaithersburg (is that the one in Rio?) would be open at 12:30am selling merch?

So glad for the team, but especially three guys:

Zimmerman, who WAS the franchise for a while.

Strasburg, who was unfairly maligned for a 2012 decision he didn't make.

Kendrick, who seems like a great guy who's had a solid career and picked the perfect time to have his best year.

He also can't stand the current POTUS, so he's a big winner to me!

Upthread I'd said this could be the big nut punch loss for this franchise even when compared to 1986, but the ones vs. the Phillies in '80 are probably worse.

This was at least #2. Two-thirds of this game was spent with the Nationals looking like they were toast. Then Kendrick, on a good pitch, clanks a rocket off the RF pole for a go ahead/come from behind HR - with almost (but not quite) Bucky Dent shock value. From that moment on, the Astros did very little that looked like a contending team. It's a really bad loss.

Kendrick hit .344 with a .966 OPS this season. It's gotta be the quietest OPS+ of 142 in baseball history. And it wasn't like he was a bench guy -- he played in 121 game and had 370 PA.... though he did hit a .900 OPS in his 70 starts, and a 1.278 OPS in games he was a sub. Wow.

I said this after both NLDS (not sure if here), I'm just thankful our run last year was so smooth and it really is all the more impressive.

it doesn't take much going wrong to lose a postseason series, even for a 107 win team.

it was definitely shocking to see the Astros fold against any Nationals surge. I think their lineup just was too cold, only Springer/Altuve were consistent and even that went away in these last two games.
