So the OF to start the season will probably be: Stanton, Tauchman, Judge and Gardner. Very solid, and despite Gardner’s age, he more than deserves returning especially when looking at his impressive stats from last season. I kind of overlooked that he had a 4 bWAR.

Not only did he have 4 bWAR last year, he has consistently been such a good defender and baserunner that he has totaled 26.4 bWAR over the last seven seasons, around a 3.8 average.

If NY moves one of Andujar/Ford/Voit (most likely Andujar), Stanton can be the primary DH and maybe a spot would open up for Maybin at least until Hicks comes back.

Sanchez
Voit
DJL
Gleyber
Gio
Tauchman
Gardner
Judge
Stanton

bench: Higashioka, Wade, Ford, Maybin, with Clint Frazier/Thairo Estrada in AAA to start.

That lineup needs a lefty.

OPS against rights/lefties

Sanchez - 867 / 759
Voit - 860 / 790
DJL - 830 / 1.066
Gleyber 861 / 792
Gio 895 / 876
Tauchman 823 / 974
Gardner 892 / 654
Judge - .847 / 1.124
Stanton - 792 / vs 1.036

Or does it? 800+ across the board except Stanton but nobody is really elite vs righties. Gardner/Urshela having the best OPS vs righties goes to show what lefties mean to the lineup. Our best hitters simply aren't the same against the righties.

Interesting point, nice to see those numbers laid out like that. I would counter that those nine against righties average out to around a .850 OPS, Bryce Harper last year had a .849 OPS against RHP.

There was a little twitter fan trade making the rounds of Voit & Andujar for Josh Bell (lefty, 27, power..etc) but that would be an overpay to me. However, Bell is a good fit. Crushes righties, stays on the field, and is 1st year arb so 3 more years of control.

Yeah, that was Jim Bowden stupidity, Bell is an even worse defender than Voit at 1B and Voit has two more years of control. Bell was incredible the first part of the season but mediocre down the stretch (.780 OPS in his final 55 games), Voit has been fantastic for NY until he hurt his oblique and tried to play through it.

Would I trade Voit straight up for Bell despite Voit’s extra years of control? Probably. Would I throw in someone like Albert Abreu too? Sure, they need to clear 40 man spots anyway, but that’s about as far as I’d go.

Today is my birthday, here is my dream scenario:

==============

NY: “Guys, just tell us what it’ll take here. We’ve offered 8/264, by far the biggest deal ever for a pitcher. We’ll go farther if we have to but at some point it starts to impact our ability to surround you with as much talent as we’d like.”

Cole: “Yeah, the money’s good (we hear Boras choking a bit) but we do have one more request.”

NY: “Sure, name it. You want us to bring in last year’s personal catcher Maldonado? Just say the word.”

Cole: “Nah, I read that article Jon linked on Higashioka’s framing skills and I see his AAA power numbers, excited to work with Gary and him if we agree. It’s something different, but it’s a little hard to say.”

NY: “Gerritt, you can talk to us. Whatever it is, we’ll do our best to make it happen for you.”

Cole: “OK, cool, so it’s your stupid-ass antiquated no facial hair rule. I like my beard, I’m not shaving.”

NY: “Oh, wow, hmm, ok.”

Cole: “And it needs to be portrayed as the team’s idea, not mine. I’m not coming to NYC with an old school purist contingent pissed at me before I even take the mound.”

NY: “Yeah, you got it, Gerritt, of course. So does that mean we have a deal?”

Cole: “I wanted to wait another month or two, but yeah, let’s do it, for Jon.”

NY: “For Jon! We need to hook that guy up with some tickets.”

============

You’ve got 21 hours left to pull this off, Brian, thanks in advance.

Peter Gammons obliquely tweeting that Cole to NY is done, who knows.

When I saw this thread pop up on the “Recently Updated” list, my first thought was terror/righteous indignation that the MFY had indeed signed Cole. But my second thought was how glad I was that a thread like this and the MFY fan community we enjoy can exist and thrive here at SoSH. At the risk of angering the V&N gods, there are a lot of important people who could learn a thing or two.

I live with a perilous nuclear family, with a Yankee fan wife born in the Bronx, and two now adult sons whose allegiances we agreed to unnaturally select, manage and divide. Through the 90s and 00s, our home turned into a reality TV show in October, not always in a good way. We’ve all matured a little, with 2004 being the Big Bang, but nobody has lived with the rivalry more than me. I haven’t always been proud of my behavior, though you know, the Yankees suck.

But to the matter at hand, a sincere happy birthday and best wishes to @jon abbey , and thanks as well as coconspirators @crow216 , @EvilEmpire ,@Wingack , @terrynever @TheDivision , @ThePrideofShiner and others I apologize for not coming up with right now. May none of your baseball wishes come true, but all the rest is good by me.

Thanks dude, same! I'm a glutton for punishment. Post on a Sox board every day and married into a Sox fan family. And Celtics. And Pats. Our wedding speeches included Sox and Yankees jabs.

Wouldn't have it any other way.

If true, there's basically a 99% guarantee Happ is gone. It sure does feel like a lot of dominoes could fall if one or both of these things happen.

I saw speculation somewhere recently about Frazier for Ray, but that seems light.
I'm looking forward to Frazier being traded. I'm not looking forward to him openly talking shit about the team once he's shipped out. He seems like exactly the type who will publicly crap on the team for mistreatment of some sort.

Eh. I'm looking forward to him being traded too, but only 'cause his defense sucks and I'm skeptical that he'll be able to fix it too much. But beyond that, I hope he enjoys lots of success and I don't care at all if he runs his mouth. More power to him. The cockiness and swagger is all part of the package. It is what it is.

If Abbey has hit 50, Crow’s warming up in the bullpen. Youth must be served.

Happy birthday, JA. You are the Most Valuable Poster!

Wow, wasn't expecting all those birthday wishes, wasn't angling for those, just trying to nudge karma a bit. Thanks to everyone for your kind words, though.

@Mugsy's Jock, nice post. I have something of a mixed family now too, my sister-in-law and her family are hardcore Sox/Boston fans, her brother drove around the country one summer to watch Pedro pitch in as many stadiums as he could.

We got a lot closer than I expected today, this seems to be moving faster than anticipated. Get it done, Brian.

I doubt this is going to be high enough but a strong first bid anyway.

"I'm told #Yankees have a seven-year, $245 million offer on the table for Gerrit Cole. Would be a record-setting contract for a pitcher, surpassing Greinke’s $34.4 million AAV. Question is whether #Dodgers or #Angels will go to 8-9 or even 10 years."

View: https://twitter.com/BobKlap/status/1203748448870313985
Considering he’ll be 29 to start the season, it will not be surprising if a team offers him 10 years to get it done. If the Angels do that then that’s close to three-quarters of a billion dollars tied to two players for a long time. Great players, especially Trout, but nevertheless that’s a lot money.

Hate to see the Yankees get Cole but love to see them tie up that much money on one player. Same reason I go back and forth on Mookie.

Yeah, it's definitely risky, but NY has a lot of commitments expiring soon and hopefully a wave of young pitching ready for the majors in a year or two. Also we have no idea what the next CBA will be, after the 2021 season.

When have those deals ever hampered them from putting a winning team on the field? Win 1-2 World Series in the first five years of the contract and then sign the next Gerrit Cole during the backend of it.

I think there is also a decent chance the $248/top cap gets eliminated in the next CBA. If the players should focus on anything, it should be erasing hard caps that seem to have stopped some of the big teams from exceeding.

Heyman says Cole will likely be signed by the end of the meetings or just after, and he will go to the highest bidder. And who would know better than Boras' designated spokesman?

Even if he's not going to the highest bidder, if he's already decided to go to NY or to Anaheim, it's worth it for Boras to have his sock puppet imply that bids must be maximized.
