Bummer for Lamelo. If they needed an MRI to see/confirm the fracture, it's likely not displaced.

Scaphoid would be the fracture to worry about and the one that seemingly could knock him out for the year. Limited blood flow makes these at risk for poor healing and possible avascular necrosis (dead bone).

I'm not sure any other non-displaced wrist fracture would knock him out automatically for 2+ months and the playoffs.

Not sure if this narrows it down at all but:

Woj says it is in the area of his thumb. He also played after it happened in his last game.

Scaphoid is on the thumb side of the wrist so could still be that if it's truly a "wrist fracture".

1st metacarpal base fracture would be another option, one of the bones of the hand but that part of the bone articulates with the wrist so pain is basically at the wrist.

Scaphoid is the bad one that they will surely be cautious about, particularly if it's in the middle or proximal portion (closer to the forearm) of the bone. These part heal poorly compared to the more distal (hand side) of the bone.

Perhaps nobody. That's the thing though, they can go 0-14 over the next 4 weeks and still be well in the playoff race at 28-28. Then getting AD and Lebron back rested and healthy and well...
It’s the NBA. Teams will lay down expecting an easy W. The Lakers have played a couple games without them already.....they blew out OKC last year and lost to Sacramento this year on the final possession.

76ers survive Knicks 101-100 in a game they deserved to lose. That’s how it’s going right now. Off to see the Warriors on Tuesday night and short handed Lakers on Thursday.

With LBJ and Embiid missing so much time, who is the MVP leader at this point? If you’re talking most valuable, Harden has been unbelievable, keeping Brooklyn so close to the top while dealing with an injured Durant and the emotionally fragile Irving.
If LeBron and Embiid miss enough time to disqualify them it could get really interesting. I think Harden is disqualified for his Houston exit. KD has also missed too much time. I think Jokic is the favorite right now, but depending on how the West standings shake out I could see Dame also getting in the conversation. Denver and Portland are both 25-16; if one of them catches up to the 1-2 seed in the West they will be the MVP. Dame has a great narrative going in that he really carried a limited Portland team to 25-16, and with CJ back they pose a real threat to go up in the standings.

Kawhi and George are having strong seasons but might cancel each other out. It would seem unlikely that the Giannis wins his third straight MVP, but Milwaukee is 2 games back from the #1 seed and I mean, he is averaging 29-12-6 and shooting 56% from the field with great defense. Luka and Steph are having great seasons but I don't think their teams are going to be good enough to be seriously considered.

Current odds for context:

Jokic -110
Bron +450
Embiid +600
Giannis +800
Harden +800
Lillard +1400
Doncic +1600

Jokic is the obvious fave but if the criteria is impact on W/L record, Chris Paul has jumped Phoenix a few levels.

Chris Paul has 0 chance. Literally none at all. Phoenix could go undefeated the rest of the way and Paul still wouldn't merit consideration, statistically he's just not good enough. 16 points and 8+ assists isn't in the realm of possibility. He was a deserving all star and maybe he gets 3rd team all-nba, but that's gonna be it.

I mean, obviously, I know how MVP works. I was saying (not very clearly) that his impact has been immense.

Fabulous regular season going on for the 76ers, must be nice.

What has Brett Browns' post-mortem been like in Philly?

Haven’t heard anything about Brown except that he quit as coach of the Australian National Team. He must still be living in the Philly area with his family, waiting for a college job to open up. He played at Boston U under Pitino so maybe Rick can help him out.
As for the 76ers, it is so nice to see a team over-perform its talent level, play smart in late and close situations. So much of it can be traced to Doc’s experience and his credibility with players.
Brett Brown was a nice guy with no winning experience as a head coach in the league, and he never played pro ball. He coached under Greg Popovich but that was a long time ago.

Doc refused to let his team lose after they blew a late lead. Simmons and Harris both went 0-for-2 from the line in final minutes. Harris had two with 16 seconds left and missed both. He’s an 88 percent FT shooter, said later he couldn’t feel his right arm after a hard foul from Randle in a rebounding skirmish following a Knicks miss. Then Randle hit a lucky three to tie it. Ball hit far rim, went straight up in the air and fell through the hoop.

Knicks opened OT with another three and Doc called timeout, gave them a breather, and said they could win this game. Second game of a back-to-back. They blew a similar game to Milwaukee last Wednesday. But this time they found a way. Randle’s stupid shove on Harris in another rebounding tussle gave Tobias a chance at redemption with 5 seconds left in OT. He made them both. Randle spent the final 10 minutes bitching at the refs and paid for it when he shoved Harris. That late in a game, maybe refs look the other way. But not when a guy is complaining on every call.

Any news on Hunter? He was supposed to be re-evaluated on the 19th. I think he's going to be better than Collins but I'm a fan boy.
Hunter is listed as "Questionable" for tonight against the Clippers - first time he's not just been "Out" since the injury. He's definitely supposed to be back in action at some point during the current road trip, and probably sooner rather than later, which is obviously great news for the Hawks.

Obi Toppin last 5 games (35 total minutes)

0 points (0-8 fg)
3 rebounds
0 assists
0 steals
0 blocks
-34 plus-minus

It’s okay that he’s 23 years old and can’t guard an NBA position, since he’s such an NBA-ready offensive dynamo!

Not like they badly needed a PG and Tyrese Haliburton was staring them in the face at #8...

The Knicks made up for it with Quickley anyway. That is one ugly stat line though lol.

Toppin is in the wrong situation. Thibs isn't interested in playing him and when he does, it's as a wing and where he is just told to sit in the corner, which is not going to be his game at the NBA level.

Crazy watching a team push the pace off every defensive rebound. Wonder what a team with athletic wings could do with that mindset.

I guess you have to get stops first, to be fair.

TNT getting a Lakers team without LeBron and Davis and then the Curry-less Warriors has not led to the most competitive slate of games tonight.

Sixers began sleepwalking in the 2H and are going through the motions in the 3Q. They better FTS or else it will be a road loss.

Edit: The game has clearly slowed down for Jordan Poole. Don’t want to hear “small sample”.....when the game slows down for a shooter it slows down, period. It’s the leap once it does.

Replay totally broken if you are looking at a loose ball tangle-up foul in the backcourt to assess for clear path after being talked into it by the player/coach.

Anyone still unsure of how valuable veteran rotation players who “get it” are to a team can watch Jeff Green during the final 6 seconds of tonight’s Blazers game as an example.

Nets up 3 and need to inbound side out from the frontcourt against full blown deny defense. Green patiently waits for Harden to break from of the double team (he doesn’t), he then looks for Harris on the baseline but he’s smothered, now Green allows the final progression to develop with Tyler Johnson sprinting back into the play but that isn’t really there.......no panic, Green calmly uses the Nets final TO at about the 4.5 count. Following the TO, the Nets run the identical action except Harden is used as a decoy while Harris makes a hard cut back to the ball quicker than the Blazers expect. Green delivers to ball over the top but recognizes while ball is in the air that Harris won’t be able to stop on a dime without traveling as he takes two quick jab steps to establish position inbounds as Harris tips the ball back to him on a bang bang play. Green secures possession, is fouled, makes a FT. Two perfectly executed inbounds plays by Jeff Green to secure the win. That was some beautiful basketball right there.

Yeah, Quickley was a nice save, but can you imagine a young backcourt combo of Haliburton and Quickley, the steady, uber-efficient floor general and the microwave scorer? One of the great things about Haliburton is that he’s such an easy fit with basically any personnel. They would have been set for years to come; and it’s not like people at the time weren’t imploring them to pick him.

You can say they made up for it with Quickley ... or that they came thisclose to a franchise-defining draft. And I’d say the same about the Suns, who like the Knicks have been skating on the good vibes of a much-better-than-expected season ... but imagine how much more stoked they’d be with Haliburton as their third guard — and long-term running mate with Booker when CP3 ages out in a couple years — as opposed to Jalen Smith, a somewhat stiff stretch 4 who was projected in the late first round?

Anyway, it’s probably too soon to write off Toppin or Smith, but if I were a Knicks or Suns fan I’d be kicking myself madly while also enjoying my team’s progress.

That is absolutely true about the Knicks and something I have been thinking since the first time I saw Halliburton for SAC, but it’s also true that when you read the recent draft day Knicks decision making story, they barely took Quickley after a F in Toppin, zero chance they take him if they had taken a G in Halliburton earlier, which oddly makes me feel better.

And yes, Toppin is completely lost offensively. He actually made some nice defensive stops on Hachimura tonight, but taking him looks awful right now. He needs regular minutes but he does nothing positive when he does get his rare chances.

If you were building a real life (not fantasy) team for this year’s playoffs, would you rather build around Harden or Lillard? I think Harden but really not sure.

That’s plain greedy though. Hey, hitting big on a mid to late 1st round pick is something I’ve been waiting for Ainge to do for two decades now. It’s pretty astonishing that when he finally selects one who can actually play in the league they are off to their next destination soon after their rookie deal has ended.

How come officials don't use an actual stopwatch for out of bounds 5 seconds call? Like they literally could just have a preset button that is on their wristwatch that they start immediately start after handing the ball to the out of bounds player. It beeps at 5 seconds. Why we rely on someone counting with their arm extending out every second seems ridiculous. Same could be said for 8 second backcourt violation

Haven’t NBA officials used the shot clock to call an 8-second violation for over a decade? They haven’t used the arm signals in forever.

The visible counts are a clue to the coaches and the players as well. Also, unless there was a separate official timing stuff you don't want the refs taking their eyes off the floor.

The arm swing is supposed to be a second. I presume they practice it. https://www.myvirtualofficialsassociation.com/?p=626

I think they confirm it with the shot clock when it's on (or game clock) but from memory, I think they still do the visible counts as a matter of habit. They have to do it for other things like inbounds so without checking, I think they are doing it for the backcourt count too.

Maybe they do it or maybe some do it. It’s one of those things I’d wager my life on that it hasn’t occurred in a decade since I don’t recall seeing it and I probably end up dead.

They wouldnt need to take their eyes off the floor to press a button. I don't know, seems archaic to have them count to 5 with their arm considering the technology availavble to them

The official is facing the shot clock and surely has the peripheral vision to see the clock go from 16 to 15 especially when trained.

I was also referring to Jefferson, West, Allen, Avery Bradley, Sully and Olynyk as well. Rondo is the only one really.....in 20 years!!
What's being argued here? Jefferson was traded for KG and West was part of the package for Ray Allen. They resigned Bradley after his rookie deal and traded him in his final year for a better player in Marcus Morris who was signed for an additional year at $5,000,000. As pointed out Olynyk was a lottery pick, and they were already paying Al Horford the max, and they replaced him with Theis on the minimum.

Ainge isn't a perfect GM, but I'd say the underlying logic of many of his moves has been pretty strong, and many of the criticisms he's getting now are just revisionism.

One could argue since 2011, he hasn't hit on any non lottery picks outside of Terry Rozier. PP and TL may change the narrative.

That covers quite a lot of 1st round picks too.

Not sure what HRB is arguing though. Maybe that they don't sign their non lottery picks, but none have been worth signing outside Scary.

Yeah but they would have to take their eyes off the court to look at the stopwatch/timer.

Plus, the interweb is telling me that players/coaches look for the visible timing cues. I don't know how much players do it but I'm sure some coaches/assistant coaches look at that.

Since 2011
Sullinger- got 4 years of better than slot production, then got out right in time before he fell apart
Melo= Bust
Young- didn't do much
Hunter- Bust
Rozier- key contributor, swapped out for a perennial All-Star
Zizic- traded as part of a package for an All-NBA player
Yabu- Didn't do much
TL- We'll see what happens, but looks like a real hit.

So 8 late picks, and he did about average, got one really good player (didn't re-sign because they could get a better player instead), traded one immediately, couple busts, couple deep bench guys, 1 solid player who they got value from then didn't overpay.
