I am trying to come up with a witty title but cannot find one.

The Niners have started the season 2-2 in what is probably the toughest division in the NFL. This after eeking out a division win last year that helped them go all the way to the Super Bowl, where one play where Tyreek Hill was all alone, plus an overthrow to Sanders (who had beaten his coverage) led to a loss . No, I am not biiter.

This year started with a stupid loss vs Arizona, plus back ti back games at Met Life where they lost their starting QB, starting RB, Kittle, two stars on defense, plus their backuo TE.

They are starting to recover at least on offense, but Nick Mullens directly led to their defeat vs the Eagles last night (a fumble a pick 6, a misthrow).

As they regroup to play the Dolphins, what can we expect? A mediocre year (somewhat typical of Super Bowl losers)? To pick up the pace and contend for the division title?

I think they have built a good, soild team. And they found a good weapon in Brandon Ayiuk in this year´s draft. One thing is for certain, there is no QB contriversy.

I know there a few fans in this board. Let´s see what we all think.

The question is Jimmy the guy long term? To my eyes, he seems like an average QB surrounded by very good players in a great offensive scheme. He’s also not the picture of durability either.

I don’t think the 49ers will be this bad, but if they are on the clock in April and Justin Fields is on the board, to me that’s a no brainer.

Gave the title a go but certainly open to change.

What's fascinating about SF is that JG is now mostly dead cap friendly release/trade ($2m+) after this year:

Weren't a good portion of their fan base calling for Mullens anyway?

Million dollar question. I don't think there was widespread support for benching Jimmy, but his playoff performance leading into an iffy week one performance didn't do him many favors. He still throws 1-3 horrible passes a game where he just doesn't see the defender. I think in today's league you almost need to be a threat to run or have elite pocket awareness to make up for it - he has neither. What worries me is Shannahan's partially correct sense that he can make it work with any QB (see: Cousins, Kirk) and they won't try to replace Jimmy with an upside QB in the draft. I'd like to see Kyle work with a mobile QB again like he did in RG3's rookie year, which was awesome to watch minus the injuries.

Overall I think the team is on the way to a 8-8, 7-9 type year due to all the injuries. They've had a pretty easy schedule so far and it gets brutal after this week. Rams, Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, Saints, Rams, Bills.

I´ve been thinking for a long time that Jimmy G is not a playoff winning/championship winning QB. He's good but something is missing.

Then of course, the Niners made the Super Bowl and everyone was happy, but the defense blew a big play and another play and Jimmy G had to win, and he failed. Losing the Super Bowl does not fall on his shoulders alone of course, but how many QBs do not miss that throw to a wide open Emmanuel Sanders so badly?

But Jimmy G coming in made them more complete. It was an opportunity the Niners had to take. I just hope that if they have a chance to grab a good QB in the draft they do so. And with their injuries and upcoming record, they might pick in the middle of the 1st round, where a good QB may be available.

Today's game vs the Dolphins proved that the defense is not up to par after all the injuries. This team is a mere shadow of what it was last year, but losing so many key players on defense will do that.

Maybe they rished Jimmy G and he wasn´t ready? Maybe. The offense has the potential with Mostert, Jucsyk (sp?), Kittle, Samuel, and now Ayiuk and Mckinon.

They are better than their record, but the bad news is their schedule gets very tough going forward.

So call it a weird Covid lost season and get a very good draft slot. Add pieces, get guys back for next year, and they should be in great shape for 2021 and beyond.
