College basketball coaches seem to be having difficult time understanding how to coach with masks on. Huggins and Few had them as chinstraps
In Huggins’ defense, the refs completely changed the way they were calling the game from first half to second half and West Virginia had some awful calls go against them.

Aren't the games they are showing better w/o the fake crowd noise? Still pissed at ABC/ESPN for effectively shouting down Sean McDonough throughout the BC/Notre Dame football game a couple weeks ago.

Ok, so just how good is Luka Garza? Guy is putting up ridiculous numbers so far.

vs. N. Carolina Central: 26 points (11-14 fg), 10 reb, 3 blocks
vs. Southern: 41 points (14-15 fg), 9 reb, 3 blocks
vs. W. Illinois: 35 points (13-21 fg), 10 reb, 2 blocks

So far on the season: 34.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, 76.0% fg, 62.5% 3ptfg, 80.8% ft

He's got good size (6'11", 265), has got excellent shooting mechanics, and has good footwork in the post. Doesn't seem to be a great athlete, but seems decent enough. And it's not like this is some crazy leap. Last year he was terrific as well, averaging 23.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, shot 54.2%, and 35.8% from three.

But looking at 2021 mock drafts, the guy is nowhere to be found.

https://www.nbadraft.net/nba-mock-drafts/- Not even listed as a 2nd rounder.

https://nbadraftroom.com/p/2021-2nd-round/- Listed as a second round pick, at #53.

So is this guy a legit NBA player?

If this was 10-15 years ago, he'd be a top 10 pick. But, what he does well does not fit the current NBA style of play. He's too slow. Great college player, not an NBA player. He'll make a ton of money over in Europe or in Asia.

Well he may be slow on D, but he can really shoot, so on the offensive end of the floor he'd be a real nice asset. And not a Kanter, who was really only good in the post. Garza can post or he can hit the three. Would his D just be so awful that he's basically unplayable in the NBA?

I'd be very leery of him getting his shot off against more athletic centers in the NBA.

Why? His release is really nice. He may be slow of foot, but his shot looks fantastic. Just spot him up and when the big helps out on a drive, kick it to him. Or pick and pop and he shoots over smaller players.

I really don't think that's the issue. Defense is the issue.

I don't think he'll be as effective on offense against just as tall and more athletic bigs he'd face in the NBA. They will be able to close out on him faster than the players he's against now. Defense is definitely the bigger issue so any cut in his offensive value is bad for him.

Why? I'm the resident primary Zag fan on this board and love how Timme's game has grown over the past couple of seasons.
He was terrible in the first half then the refs gave him every call on the offensive end while getting away with much worse on the defensive end. In the process, he just rubbed me the wrong way.

Something to bear watching for its impact on all college sports pushing through the Covid period. U. Florida baskeball player just collapsed on the floor and is in critical condition.

“Johnson tested positive for COVID-19 during the summer. Although the cause of Johnson’s ailment was not immediately known, the coronavirus can lead to myocarditis, a viral infection of the heart muscle. At its most severe, myocarditis can lead to sudden cardiac arrest”

He was transported to Gainesville (UF Shands) yesterday and according to UF Athletics is acknowledging/responding to basic commands. Still, plenty to be concerned about.
Not out of the woods, but seems to be getting considerably better

Some much needed good news. I hope his recovery continues and is complete. I thought I watched him die on Saturday.

ACC Network/ESPN learned having remote announcers (in the works even without COVID) may save money, but when you're in Bristol, Charlotte, or at home to do the game, you're pretty much fucking clueless if any "unique" situation like this presents itself.

Pushback: a) how much more would the commentators know and be able to tell you in a situation like this if they were in the arena? And b) if a commentator is resourceful enough, there's actually a lot you can do remotely, especially if you have a partner who can vamp to fill time while you look things up online (or even get your producer to make a few calls and feed information to you).

I would always rather commentate on a game in personal if I could, of course. But at the same time, commentators shouldn't use being remote as an excuse to go through the motions.

Pushback accepted and returned. I'm not anti-remote, I understand it, and thanks to technology it's ALMOST seamless.

I notice it mostly because it's my profession and it's easy for me to see and hear there is an over reliance on days old conversations and an overbuild of pre-produced storylines that are harder to change on the fly when, with COVID, the producer and graphics ops might be remote as well.

As you point out and rightfully prefer, being in the building, watching teams warmup, having casual conversations with players and team personal and chatting with beat reporters during the course of the day makes a difference.

In this example, they'd have known a great deal thanks to their eyes, ears, and proximity. They'd likely be court side. They didn't have a sideline reporter on-site for this game, so oops x2. Sideline reporters have have been the eyes and ears on-site for most "remote" games, particularly football and not just for their on-air hits. This instance was particularly challenging because the truck was correctly not showing video of this particular incident and leaving the "talent" (I used quotes to mock myself for my award-winning career) blind. It appeared they only had access to the program feed. This was an example of breaking news and it showed a flaw in the system. I went to UF, so my emotional connection to the event went beyond a typical viewer and that should be factored in.

In closing, I know it's been a brutal year for the biz. Stay positive and here's hoping your work schedule (and that of so many others) will be busting at the seems ASAP in 2021.

Any women's hoops fans here? Paige Bueckers for UConn (freshman) is absolutely sick. She looks like she's about 15 years old but she's an absolute wizard out there.

The TCU KSU game is hard to watch with one team in purple and the other in lavender.
