Osweiler. All the Jets did was light money on fire. Houston had to light a 2nd round pick on fire to free themselves of Osweiler.
Bell and Osweiler were equally useless, but the Texans probably would’ve been content to let Osweiler hold a clipboard if they were as bad as the Jets. They only moved the pick because they were a good team that didn’t want that much cap space tied up in a useless player.

Not even sure Bell made a bad choice. He got paid. Now he can negotiate a new contract.
I mean, I guess if his goal was to sign one contract, then he succeeded. But he went from one of the best RBs in the NFL to mediocre, cut by the worst team in the league, and probably signing for the league minimum.

Sitting out a season during the prime of his career was disastrous for his actual playing abilities, apparently. He did get his $35 million, yes. But he gave up $14.5 million in the process, and now will be playing for peanuts.

Are we sure? He turned down a rumored 5/70 deal with Pittsburgh that had something north of $30M guaranteed. Then, he gave up his entire 2018 salary of almost $15M. I think he will have ended up worse off. Almost reminds me of the Nomar situation.

He's only signing for the minimum for the remainder of the year, and at that only because the Jets owe him for this year and there is no reason to give them the offset.

He probably lost some money, though not much (more that he lost the year), he got 28M for a year plus with the Jets, and now he can choose the best place to showcase himself for a new deal at 28.

So he probably gave up some money, but turning down a 5 year deal with 30M guaranteed then making 28M in 2 years isn't a bad trade-off. Can't know the structure for sure, but he might have made around the same amount over the last 3 seasons as he would have with the Steelers and he played a lot less games. Yes he doesn't have the rest of that deal out there, but it's the NFL, who knows if: 1. It was real money, 2. The Steelers would have kept him and paid anywhere near 70M.

This makes more sense as to why they didn’t eat money and get something back

Aware of Bell's frustrations, the #Jets started shopping Bell on Monday. Contacted every team. Also gave his agent permission to speak to teams. In the end, biggest deterrent for teams wasn't $6M remaining base for 2020, but $8M injury guarantee for '21. Risky.

NFL RBs have a short shelf life; most are past their prime by their 7th or 8th season. Bell is 28 years old and in his 7th season, not counting 2018. I think you have to assume he’d be the same diminished player today that he is now if he had played in 2018.

Bell is a bit unique in that he’s not an overly explosive player. He doesn’t get his yards in big chunks. His gift is his vision, and his ability to handle a huge volume of work. In 2017 he was an All-Pro and his longest rush was 27 yards.

I don’t think Bell will ever be All-Pro Le’Veon Bell again, but I think he can still be productive on a team with a good line that will give him the touches he needs.

I agree with a lot of this. If you give Bell a good zone blocking scheme where he can use his patience, he'll be succesful.

The point, of course, is that statement is true for the majority of NFL RBs, which is why the position is largely fungible. Bell was an upper tier RB because he was a + runner and ++ receiver. You could design a lot of plays for him and let his patience and vision get you chunks.

At 28, his days as a plus runner may be gone. That sucks a lot of value from him. There are plenty of receiving backs out there today.

My bet is he ends up on the Ravens. Their running game isn't nearly as potent as last season. Mark Ingram is a bit long in the tooth, and Bell's trademark patient running style might really work in the read-option offense. Texans, Cardinals, Bears, and the Chargers make sense as well.

The Ravens do not need a RB. Why would they bother with Bell and take up a roster space?

On your list, the Bears makes sense. That's about it. Why would any team pay for a malcontent when they have perfect good RBs?

He loves pass catching backs. Great 3rd down chess piece and have the best offensive line in the league.
Bell hasn't been a worthwhile running back in the NFL in 3 years. That is like 30 years in human age. And he's seemingly not a great clubhouse guy either.

I don't understand why any team would take this on. There is not much upside and plenty of downside. Bell isn't that good anymore.

I don't think they'd let the immortal Gus Edwards block them from improving their run game, but yes it's not a perfect fit. That said, Ingram is 31, Dobbins is raw, and Edwards is a JAG. They're also not a team to shy away from a malcontent, like at all. Taking a closer look at their stats they are second in total rush yards, which is surprising to me because they haven't given an RB more than 11 carries in a single game this year and Lamar is running a bit less. Bell could also improve their passing game.

He was last good in 2017. For an NFL RB that may as well be 2007.
Bell was phenomenal behind one of the best lines in the NFL. Most RBs can do that.

But, yes, that was three years ago. Signing Bell would be crazy. The only team that makes sense is the Bears or the Giants, just for the yuks.

There is no way the Ravens sign Bell. They have too many players in the RB room already. And Edwards may be JAG, but he is a 235 pound JAG that they like to pound people in the 4Q.

Someone will need a running back. Someone always does. Maybe week 7 or maybe week 9 but even if there is not a perfect landing spot today the odds there will be increase significantly every Monday morning.

Gus Edwards has one fourth-quarter run on the entire season. Ingram could easily take the role of 4qtr grinder.
Well that can't be correct because according to this PBP - https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/202009130rav.htm#all_pbp - Edwards ran three times in the 4Q against CLE alone.

Also, this article says that as of 10/1, Edwards had "piled up 121 yards on 15 rushing attempts (8.1 average) during the third and fourth quarter of games". The Ravens like to use him as a "finisher" (whatever that means in football) and he was used that way a lot last season.

More seriously, the amount of soft tissue injuries the Jets have had over the past 2 years is annoying, don't know if it is luck or staff or how Gase runs things. I assume we are doing something wrong. This happened to the Yankees about a decade ago and they fired the trainers (I think).
And the Jets promptly hired them.

Gregg Williams trying to get Gase fired and be installed as the new head coach

The tension is building within the New York Jets' organization.

On Friday, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams took a veiled shot at coach Adam Gase's offense, suggesting the defensive struggles aren't entirely the fault of the defense.

The 0-5 Jets, who face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, are allowing 32.2 points per game, worse than every team except the Dallas Cowboys.

"It's not a very good number -- and a lot of it's not all defensively," Williams said after Friday's practice. "It's points on the board and we've got to do a good job of that and how you do that is make them kick more field goals, got to do a better job in field-position-type things.

"As you see, the scoring is up in the league, but it still makes me sick," he said.

Seven words hung in the air: "A lot of it's not all defensively." When asked what he meant by that, Williams turned cryptic.

"You'd have to figure it out," he said, ending his video call with reporters.

The embattled Gase wasn't available to comment, as he already had spoken to reporters.

Isn’t this pretty much the same thing he did to Hue Jackson in Cleveland?
Yes. According to Greggg, he was interviewed dozens of times for coaching positions. Everyone wants him.

Gase is definitely a problem. But Greggggggg is most certainly not a solution.

Yahoo Sports with story that a league source said Trevor Lawrence is so good that the Jets should absolutely NOT fire Gase.

Until after season.
