Colts took Eason
Curious what the tape guys here like @SMU_Sox and @EL Jeffe have to say about him. Mina Kimes, who lives in the PNW and knows her stuff, didn't seem very high on Eason when I heard her talk about him. Made him sound like a guy with a million dollar arm and a ten cent head.

Sure, but we got Hollister as a UDFA then dumped him for a 7th, and are now trading 2 4ths and a 6th to try and replace him with a player who might not even be as good.
Almost like situations and circumstances change.

Sure, the point was more that it's a really bad use of resources to trade a bunch of picks to take a fungible guy in the 4th just because you want a 2nd TE. I was fine with Asiasi because he was their best TE available, but Keene is a bad trade on pick value alone, but then picking a fungible guy... ugh.

edit- I really dislike drafting for "need", I dislike it even more when it means burning up a bunch of picks to take 2 guys at the need position over more valuable players because you don't trust either to be good enough.

The NFL.com draft tracker also shows the ownership of each pick. The #129 went NE to BAL back to NE then to NYJ

Wasn't aware he was fungible. Wasn't on his draft weakness list.

I’d love to know the thinking of Jets taking a QB. Maybe they have a high grade on him and are going BPA?

Their Qbs after Darnold are Fales and Mike White, they need a backup badly, and a 4th round pick is a nice place to get one cheaper than FA who has a chance to be better

Bad social distancing in Green Bay. They know he's not going to the Packers, right?

Jets took a QB but it wasn't Fromm?
Eason is definitely a better prospect than Fromm. Eason has an legit NFL arm with bad footwork.
Fromm's arm is borderline and a lot of teams probably think he doesn't bring the kind of accuracy and mobility to offset that. I watched a lot of Fromm at Georgia since a bunch of my friends went there. He's a game manager at best, he can't throw an out over 8 yards without it hanging forever.

Don’t want to point out the obvious, but presumably the pats think he’s pretty good.

That's been the local stories in the PNW. His work ethic has been questionable as well as his attitude.

I saw two of his games this fall and he just didnt look like he wanted much to do with his teammates

ESPN voice/studio/Wingo falling far behind their scrolls. Horrible coverage.
Never watch the third day of the draft before? It's 5 min between picks, and they need to talk about the picks that are made. This is usual procedure for the third day

You weren't aware that SoSH posters were better equipped to evaluate college players than the Patriots front office?

Good Lord Parkinson? Okay, I guess everyone misread what the league thought of TEs in this draft. I will end up talking myself into the Keene pick at this rate just from all the bad TEs going in the 4th

To be fair my evaluation is in large part based on a wide range of other people's evaluations, and some of those people do have a better track record than the Patriots front office

I figured he was fine because we have heard of his college.

Eason struck me as an extreme caricature of Bledsoe: big, strong guy from the Pacific Northwest who just wanted to sling the ball everywhere, interceptions be damned.

Any thoughts on loosening the no spoiler thing today? ESPN is now 5 picks behind

Correction- they seem to be showing them within 1 pick....but they are doing commentary 5 picks behind. Nevermind I guess...

So who specifically said Rambo is fungible? You’ve got Ozzie Newsome on the blower?

fungible as in not significantly different from other options? Just about every analyst? PFF, Nystrom, Miller, Wright all had him as not significantly different from a number of other TEs in the same tier.

I mean I get that the front office is good at their jobs, but people are allowed to disagree with their picks, they make a lot of draft mistakes just like all front offices. The reflexive "oh so you and the EXPERTS think you know better than Blill and Caserio" stuff is really tiring.

Eight TEs went in a span of 45 or so picks--6 in a span of 27. If the Pats liked one, it was time to act.

yeah, I did mention upthread that the number of TEs that went in the 4th made me less upset about Keene. Personally I don't think a 2nd TE had value compared with the other positions on the board, but if they did think the TE class was better than generally thought, it makes more sense. I'm never going to like the trade up, but my issue with Keene is less that I think he's worse than the TEs he went before, I don't, I think they are all essentially the same value-wise, but that I don't think that trade makes sense for your 2nd favorite TE in this class

Would you like to provide a more detailed analysis on Keene? It seems no one, including our very own SMU, Inside the Pylon folks, and other posters seem to think the TE's "fungible".

Okay, 4 rounds in the books......
The most obvious difference from projections is TE vs WR. This was generally considered a very weak draft for TE and a very strong one for WR. People assumed that meant that a ton of WRs would go in the first 4 rounds and very few TEs. Seems like it's the opposite, teams are more concerned with getting the guy they like at TE and willing to wait on WR (maybe because they see less differentiation?). I also wonder if it's a case of TE being pretty weak around the league in terms of vets. So while these TEs aren't great, they are cheap and a cheap okay TE who has a chance to be good is better than paying a little bit better vets more money with no real upside?

I don't know if I'd say that. Listen to the ITP guys' podcast on TEs, they talk a lot about how there are a lot of different options and only Kmet is a clear tier above a big mess, and Keene gets brought up as a late rounder option. It seems people are really taking exception to the word "fungible", which is weird to me, would y'all prefer "replacement level"
