Going into tomorrow the positions the Pats are ok at for the next 2 years: OT, CB got eaten up. Meanwhile the WRs, TEs, Safeties, edges, DTs are all sliding back. I love the way this turned out. Tomorrow is going to be freaking huge for this franchise. I am so excited to see who they pick.

Yup. Someone good will be there at 37, if they keep it. Curious to see if Thuney gets dealt tomorrow. Guessing probably not.

I am sitting here looking at a board that I feel pretty confident is STACKED with franchise changing players. Throw all the cold water on my face that you want - this is a good draft year and all the right guys are slipping. Be excited.

Looking at my own rankings here is who I would be crazy about: these are, if possible, the gold or green players in my legend. These are the guys with the best tape and projection. Green is ++character, athletic and size fit, and good scheme/role here. Gold is all of that + has ST experience.

Here are my 2 favorites at each position:

X-WR: Michael Pittman (Gold), Denzel Mims (Green). I remember watching Mims and Pittman and thinking: why does the league like Aiyuk, Reagor, and Higgins more than these two? Pittman and Mims are studs at X. They can both beat press. They are both fantastic athletes. Pittman is a ST stud who can do coverage AND returns. His bio is littered with awards and he is a leader and an ideal professional. He's also a dominant athlete at his size and can play X or big slot. His blocking is as furious as it is ferocious. Mims can also throw you out of the club. He can beat press and play X and runs a 4.38 with a 6.66 3-cone. He needs route running refinement as well as expanding his route tree but he is a better X receiver than Harry is now.
Z WR: Bryan Edwards (Z and slot) (Gold) Edwards is going to slide because people think he is slow like they thought JJefferson was slow. Edwards is fast and dominant and could be a Z or big slot. He and Duvernay are my answer to who is the next Deebo. Personally I like Duvernay more but Edwards has better tape.
Slot: Devin Duvernay (like Edwards he can play Z and slot) (Gold), KJ Hill (Gold) Duvernay has sub 4.4 speed and adequate agility for a slot but not great. He is terrifying after the catch and built just like Deebo, an RB shaped WR. KJ Hill is one of the best route runners and slots in the class and has a ST background but is slot-only and is a mediocre athlete so there are ceiling concerns.

TE-Inline: Cole Kmet (Gold), Albert O (Green) - huge risk and I like Albert O but only at 87 or later and even then that's a hard sell for me. Albert O doesn't show up as a 4.49 40 player on tape because he is not a natural route runner. His blocking needs technical refinement in the footwork as well as the punch timing and placement. What Albert O does though is give you an Eric Ebron red-zone weapon. He is at his best making contested catches. Kmet is a high character multisport athlete who is still developing and has the highest ceiling in the class. He is just what they look for: a great size/speed seam threat who should develop into a + blocker.
TE-Other: Chase Claypool (Orange for TE-inline but Gold for TE-flex/move/FB), Dalton Keene (Green) - he could also be inline - he is much more likely a day 3 option but could sneak into the back of day 2. Claypool is a great slot option right now and shows impressive contested catch ability. He might go earlier than they would be comfortable taking him given how they value the position.

RB-Receiving Back: Darrynton Evans (Gold), Deejay Dallas (Orange) - no others are green or gold.
RB-Lead Back: Cam Akers (Green) (Swift and Dobbins won't make it to when they want to pick a RB and Akers might not either but he'd be a great fit here and could use a year to develop) - this is probably a year too early to "waste" a pick here.

OT: Josh Jones, Ezra Cleveland, and Matt Peart are all great picks sometime day 2 with Jones and Cleveland the pick earlier most likely. They are all green. I think Peart could be as good a starter as both Jones and Cleveland so I don't think they need to take either early. Cleveland could possibly kick into OG but he is 6'6". Cleveland happens to have their ideal guard athletic testing numbers and would be a Thuney-type there. And also - why take a good NFL caliber starting LT and turn him into a guard if you don't have to?

IOL: Lloyd Cushenberry C/G (Green but he wore the 18 at LSU). Robert Hunt is one of my film binkies so I have to put him in too even though he is an orange. Both of these guys continue the bully-ball trend and the Patriots brought them in for visits.

The OL class day 2 is still littered with guys who could start or be damn good backups year 1 and have high ceilings as developmental starters who are almost there by year 1-2. Matt Peart, Ben Bartch (OT/OG), Hakeem Adeniji, etc.

QB: Don't like any of these guys day 2 as good fits here. Eason has the most potential as a starter. Fromm has the best processing ability. Hurts has the best character.

IDL: Marlon Davidson (gold) - blocked kicks on ST, a leader, and he is a versatile DL with a nice floor and decent ceiling. Leki Fotu (Gold) is a former rugby player and has blocked kicks and plays ST. He has some pad level issues as well as leverage but give him the Danny Shelton program and he could be a dominating NT. Jordan Elliot (Gold) is another guy who has a high ceiling but needs some help getting there. He would be able to two gap or penetrate.

Edge/OLB: Yetur Gross-Matos (Green), Khlalid Kareem (Green). Kareem can 2-gap better than anyone and is long and powerful. He destroys the run. He might just be an early down edge but he has flashed pass-rush ability. Yetur needs a lot of work but has the best all-around flashes against the run and as a pass rusher. What worries me about him is he is not the best processor and he has too many bad reps on tape. He has to be more consistent as an edge setter and with his hand placement and pass rush counters.
Uche or Baun who are both orange and will be an odd off-ball but sometimes pass rushers are also options day 2. They are a combination of OLB/ILB and could be coveted by the Pats who want multi-functional players but who are both better suited to play more ILB which would be a learning curve.

ILB: Logan Wilson (Gold), Malik Harrison (Green). Logan Wilson is captain and special teams stud who is well balanced and athletic. He is still learning some of the game and is playing against poor levels of competition in Wyoming but after a year could be a starting ILB. Malik Harrison is a size speed freak who has been a personal favorite since the day I turned on his tape. He is a Patriots style down-hill crushing hitter but who tested out the gym and can handle zone drops and could eventually take on some TEs and RBs in space.

FS: Ashtyn Davis (Gold), Antoine Winfield Jr (Gold) - Winfield Jr. has first round tape but is undersized. His instincts and ability to read, react, and even anticipate are ready day one out of the box. Davis needs more time but has a higher ceiling and is newer to the game so it is understandable. Both are locker room stalwarts and Bill is going to be high on both. I just hope he takes one to replace DMC.

SS: Xavier McKinney (Green), Terrell Burgess (Gold). One of these SS guys and one of the FS and you are set for the next 4 years at both starting safety positions.
Burgess has more positional versatility but X is the better pure box safety. X is not always great in man to man coverage though and that worries me a bit. Love his head though. Burgess can also play Harmon's role as a FS.

Corner:
Jaylon Johnson (Green), Reggie Robinson (Gold). Reggie has been a favorite for a long time and is a prototypical Patriot through and through. Guy could a top 2 corner in this class - no really he has that kind of ceiling. Jaylon Johnson needs time but another sky-high ceiling corner.

5 of PFF's top 20 did not go in the 1st, 9 of their top 25 There is a ton of talent left on the board, and to some (including me) a lot of it is better talent (and fits) than the last 10 picks of the 1st.
8 of CBS' top 30 are left
7 of Scott Wright's top 30

Beyond that, between 23 and 32, I don't think a single player who I thought it was likely the Patriots wanted got drafted (Ruiz is the only one I could have seen).
That trade down is going to work out great whether it's making a pick at 37, or moving down again.

@SMU_Sox - Great write up. Let's say that all those guys you highlight are there for the Pats at #37. You're in charge of the Pats' draft. What do you do? Do you select one of them, and if so, who and why? Or do you figure you're good with any of them, and offer to trade down a handful of spots, knowing you can still grab one and add to your haul? Or do you try to trade up into the 2nd round, using one or two of your third round picks if necessary, so you can maybe get *two* of these guys you mention?

How would you proceed if you were in charge?

So many 3's and 4's. If we're ever gonna draft a kicker - Blankenship - high, this would be the year

Interesting to see the video of BB and Caserio on WEEI just before the trade. It kinda sounded like they were interested in Jefferson and now that he's gone, let's make the trade

I would either trade back one more time or hand in the card for a safety: Xavier McKinney, Antoine Winfield Jr, Ashtyn Davis, the best TE and a good fit, Cole Kmet, or best and most versatile DL, Marlon Davidson. Honorable mention to my favorite WR Michael Pittman but I think he slips. Also HM to Yetur Gross-Matos but Belichick needs to think he can coach some bad habits out of him.

Edit: the guys I mention above minus Yetur and Cole’s blocking and contested catch ability are all guys I happen to personally like as well and happen to think they are prototypical Patriots.

What does trading Thuney look like? Does he bring a 4th? A fifth?

And are there enough restructure levers elsewhere on the roster to sign the draft class if they keep Thuney?

All aboard the SMU train. As stated in the "what will they do at 23 thread", I'd be in favor of trading 37, 71, and 100 to the Bears for 43 and 50. Then I think they can get 2 of the guys on your list, then still get to pick at 87 and 98.

Now I think they should take best defensive player available at 37 then trade back into 2nd if Kmet is available. I think BB/Caserio will trade a couple times today and maneuver around the board.
I actually like this idea. I think 71+100 gets you into the mid-50s, and if someone they like slips, this looks like a good investment to me with the pics they have left around 100 even after the trade.

Well I thought it was relevant to discussions going on in like 3-4 threads so yeah I just posted it everywhere.
It's cool. I clicked on one thread, read it. Clicked on another, saw it and was like "Damn, did I click on same thread?" And then did that again.

First and foremost, this is awesome. Thank you. Since I know Michigan and Big10 more than anything, I'll stick with that. First with respect to Uche, I don't see why you think he would be a fit for ILB, even in a 3-4. Uche is a good edge rusher and coverage guy, but putting him in the middle would be taking him away from where he's best IMO.

I love Gross-Matos and didn't realize he had questions about consistency. What I do know is that he can create havoc and Michigan certainly identified him as a dangerman. Would love to have him.

I really liked Winfield in college as well, but I think he will have trouble handling NFL size/speed. Could definitely be a good piece to a secondary though, but as a nickel/dime guy.

Where do you think Donavan Peoples-Jones go? DPJ has all the athleticism in the world but underperformed due to shitty QBs at UM. I feel like he's got a real shot to be a guy in the League.

Dayum! Is that AZ? CA? r/houseporn. But seriously, what a tool for that wardrobe choice for the draft.

I love it, get 39
Trade back from 37 (say 37, 139 and 213 for 46 and either 77 or 83 from DEN? which ranges from -1 to +9on the trade chart so pretty reasonable in both scenarios)

Another guy I forgot to mention as a potential day 2 RB/WR/returner is Antonio Gibson out of Memphis. You want to see his potential just pop on his tape vs... SMU in 2019. He was a one man army. Talk about a guy with a high ceiling and a floor as a returner... he could be the RB1 dual-threat by year 2-3 or he could be a bust. Evans has the higher floor as a receiving back but Gibson is also very much my guy. Class act too.

Quick edit: I am a little concerned that it took him so long to crack their rotation given his obvious athletic talent especially when he has the ball in his hands. Heard rumors that he was not the smartest guy and had trouble with the play book. Great guy and a leader but had trouble picking things up.

SI has the following selections for the Pats today...

#37 - TE Cole Kmet, Notre Dame
#71 - QB Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma
#87 - S Terrell Burgess, Utah
#98 - WR Van Jefferson, Florida
#100 - OL Jonah Jackson, Ohio State

I think I'm scarred by our past Florida picks, but that would be a nice day today, I think. Good safety who could eventually replace McCourty, useful offensive lineman, a good receiver, a QB that could challenge Stidham (and may in fact be better), and a legit starting caliber tight end.

I'd be ok with that.

His highlight film was incredibly impressive. I would gladly take a shot on someone like that in the mid rounds.
