Ongoing COVID-19 Impact

These are athletes in great shape and under 35 years old. Look at the data. If you think player safety relative to Covid is a reason to not play, then you should never watch the NFL in the first place because there are numerous other health risks more statistically likely to impact these guys. Every year, not just right now.
I never said they shouldn't be playing and I'm well aware that football is a risky sport.

Eduardo Rodriguez was in excellent shape and under 35 and couldn't pitch all year due to COVID complications. Further, Cellar-door pointed out two examples of NFL players who have, in fact, had complications from COVID.

Start by firing everyone who allowed this to happen.
How does an organization allow this to happen. How do they not have protocols to prevent such things? Pure idiocy.

I see no reason the NFL should reschedule at this point. This one is on the Broncos
I think that the NFL making the Broncos either play or forfeit is terrific. This is totally on the Broncos, and they need to be forced to take responsibility.

Jake Fromm of Buffalo actually practices away from the team for this purpose. Surprised more teams don’t do this.
I assumed every team did this or a similar practice.
Guess I should know you can't underestimate the amount of incompetence in NFL organizations.

Does New England do this? Or is BB one of the incompetent ones? (I honestly don't know the answer to this question)

Don't know, but they also have a practice squad QB in Dolegala. That's what a lot of teams are doing, having the practice squad QB for break glass emergencies.

If no player ends up with long term covid complications this will be by far my favorite NFL season since I remember games (85).

Not being able to pitch all year doesn't make it a life threatening illness for him. He will be fine, and statistically it's overwhelmingly likely that all the NFL players mentioned will be, too.

Is it? I don't think the statistics on the long-term effects of myocarditis back that up at all. We don't have enough data yet to know with COVID caused myocarditis, but I think most studies place recurrence of mycarditis at 10-15%. That's not what I would call "overwhelmingly unlikely" to not be fine.

Whoever does the Rotoworld writeups is saying they have to postpone the Saints/Broncos game for the "intergrity of the NFC playoff race"

good luck with that.

The Broncos were morons. The league spelled out weeks ago when games would be postponed and when they wouldn't, and specifically said that a cluster in a position group wouldn't be grounds for it.

Broncos should have:
1. Either had a PS QB or had one of their QBs isolated.
2. Followed the damn mask protocol. Wearing masks is not hard, if they had done so they wouldn't have had to put all their QBs on the COVID list.

Oh, I 100% agree. Just was throwing that out there.

Myocarditis IS a life-threatening illness. Having it is life-threatening. Not being able to pitch was because he had a life-threatening illness.

After years of not getting the QB position right (except for importing an all-timer for one good year), it would be hysterical of this practice squad kid becomes a keeper

Yeah, I feel pretty confident that a guy who couldn't cut it at Wake or get a transfer and had to switch positions is probably not gonna be an NFL QB

I mean, there's a 99% chance you're right, but don't we watch for the other 1%?

Every marginal QB prospect has been asked to switch positions. Danny Etling is the latest example I can pull up immediately.

Joe Webb got 4 starts in his career. There's a chance he's Joe Webb.

I know. What's your point, that the team is doing right by the players even though they'll embarrass themselves?
No. My point is that the league won’t make them forfeit because the NFLPA would be pissed.

Why the attitude? I wasn’t taking shot at you. How would I know you, or anyone else, would be aware of that? So I posted some info. Congrats on snarkiness though.

https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-memo-rules-new-covid-19-procedures-for-high-risk-close-contacts
they got tagged for close contact and have to go on the COVID list for 5 days, if they test negative on all 5 days they can return to team activities on the 6th. so depending on whether day 1 is today or tomorrow it's either Thursday or Friday.
per this story the Broncos asked league to move game to Tuesday so some QBs could come off list:

Because I know everything.

While I appreciate the congratulations, I wasn't trying to be snarky, although I see how it came off that way. I just thought you made an incomplete and therefore confusing response, and I genuinely didn't understand your intent. Thanks for the clarification with the NFLPA comment.

Wait, what did the Pats do wrong? They shut everything down and took it far more seriously than the league. Also and maybe I forget, but did the Titans get anything? They were running unofficial practises during there outbreak. The league is a joke.
This is what I'm wondering. What, exactly, did the Pats do wrong? They were the ones forced by the league to fly to KC to play a game.

BB unilaterally cancelled some practices, which put the NFL in a bind in some ways, so maybe that's the justification for the fine.

They had the goddamn audacity to exist during a pandemic.

Seriously can't wait to hear the justification for this.

I assume on the NFL standard fine press release there is a line that never is removed that is a mad lib for the Pats

“And also the NEP will be fined ______.

The Titans received the same fine as the Patriots, $350,000

Titans got fined 350k last month. Seems clear that the NFL is levying some kind of scheduled fine regardless or the number or type of violations surrounding a particular COVID incident. I say this because the Titans player workout that occurred after the announced facility/activity shutdown - which at best was the result of the team not telling the players about the directive timely - is not in the same ballpark as mask violations.

I’m sure the next ‘repeat offender’ will get the Saints penalty, absent media and/or owner pressure to levy a bigger penalty.

What is telling is that the NFL isn’t seemingly auditing for protocol compliance as a matter of course, they’re investigating for violations if a player is diagnosed with COVID. Does anyone really think only 4-5 teams have had actual protocol violations in three months?

Gasper on the 98.5 pre-game show. Confirmed the fine and learned it was due to multiple mask violations in October, immediately prior to Cam testing positive.

source also added that since then, the team has been 100% compliant.

Any chance we can stop with the persecution complex? Deflategate was 6 years and 3 super bowls ago.

Are refs being fined for improper mask use?
The % of those with textbook mask use, handling, and cleaning has to be almost nil (football and irl)

Lol. People are still talking about SpyGate. It'll be 2060 when Deflategate gets no mentions on SoSH.

If you’re going to use the word “statistically,” there’s an assumption that you have a source to back up your assertion.

Really? I kind of thought the burden of proof would be on the people claiming there is grave risk in playing NFL football.

Take a look at the CDC's numbers - people in the NFL player age range are as likely to die (probably moreso) from flu in any normal year than they are from Covid in 2020.
