Ebner was an expendable player. I think he made close to 2 million last year. With Slater and Justin Bethel you don't need to pay Ebner anymore and can just draft someone for half the cost.
This correct and not evidence of a rebuild. As much as this team values ST aces, you can’t afford 4 of them at mature player salaries.

I wasn't using only Ebner as evidence of a rebuild.
KVN, Jamie Collins, Shelton, Karras (key player last season) and of course the former QB

OK...partial rebuild?
Hold me. I need reassurance in these uncertain times.
Every year is like that though. You turn over 30-40% each year. It’s good business for the Pats. Sign /draft cheap. Raise value. Let walk. Get comp picks. Repeat cycle.

Yup. Last offseason, it was Trent Brown, Trey Flowers, Chris Hogan, cutting Dwayne Allen and Adrian Clayborn, Gronk retiring, CP84, Waddle, Eric Rowe, Albert McClellan. This kind of player movement happens all the time.

I do think a) it's moving a little faster this year because there are so many ex-Patriots coaches competing for FAs and b) Brady leaving is a big f'ing deal and colors our whole perceptions of the offseason.

Agreed all around. Although the poaching by ex coaches has been a thing for several years now.

Patriots updated 2020 draft picks
1st: 23rd
3: 87th
3: 98th
3: 100th
4: 125th
5: 172th
6: 195th
6: 204th
6: 212th
6: 213th
7: 230th
7: 241st

I think moving down from 23 and trying to pick up a second round pick while staying in the first round needs to be the Patriots goal. Need as many picks as possible to find as many quality players on the cheap as possible.

Yeah or even trading 23 for say an early 2nd and an early 3rd. 23 for 38 and 70, something like that.

Per the Stuart chart 23 is worth 760. 38 + 70 is equal to 760. So something along those lines.

Edit: Carolina has 38 and 69 this year; the Chargers have 37 and 71.

I think more than most years, we need to see who drops. This is a wholly different draft than the Pats have had in the last 15 or so seasons.

We also need to see what Goodell will do re: filming in terms of any draft pick punishment. But yeah, this feels like the kind of draft where Belichick accumulates a ton of picks unless there's someone he loves. A very different experience than the last half decade or so.

They should trade down in the sixth round to 199

Speaking of Goddell, any idea when the report will come out? It seems like with all the Coronavirus talk, now would be the perfect time to release it. I mean the NFL cannot possibly still be investigating could they? Which report will be released first, Manfred's report on the Sox or the Pat's report?

Never forget

On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.

LOL. Was that Borges or CHB? I'm thinking Borges but I can't quite remember.

Borges and he’ll never live it down. Funny thing is I remember exactly where I was when I first read that column.
It's hilarious. The Pats end up drafting two guys who will be in the Pats' Hall of Fame instead of a bunch of nobodies but Borges thought they were all wrong. Hahaha

He didn't just think they were wrong. He was aggressively certain that they were wrong and took that opportunity to tell the greatest coach in NFL history what an idiot he was for disagreeing with his sagely counsel.

I cannot find the quote anymore, but I distinctly recall Borges questioning why Belichick drafted a QB in the 6th round in 2000 when they had 3 QB's on the roster already. He also complained when the Pats drafted Logan Mankins. Bashing. Borges. Never. Gets. Old.

And yet he is a Pro Football HOF voter despite him seemingly not knowing much of anything.

That's actually.....awful. He should be nowhere near that vote.
It’s actually worse. Not only is he a voter, but typically the home town reporter is the guy advocating for players.

So he’s the guy that would be presenting, advocating for, defending marginal Patriots players in the room a lot of times.

Wait - didn’t Borges have a big plagiarism scandal? How is he in any hall of fame? I used to hate that dude as a boxing “expert.”

He is not in the HOF, just the NEP representative on the HOF selection committee...the position on the selection committee is granted for life.

I was at my parent's earlier and Andrew Siciliano was on NFL Network, and my dad told me that he was talking about Edelman and potentially the Lions or Dolphins...

Honestly, I don't know if it was simply him riffing on ideas or more. So, yeah.

Believe Bill Simmons was talking about it on Cowherd’s show. Heard this 2nd hand though so can’t confirm.

Dolphins have a ton of draft capital so I would not be against it.

Don't forget Kimball

"Could it be that future generations of Patriots fans will be telling their grandchildren about their team winning their lone Super Bowl back in 2001, only to banish their best player to a divisional rival less than two years later, thus initiating Milloy's Curse? - George Kimball, Boston Herald, 9/11/03"

and

"Belichick will not be so lucky. He doesn't have (Jimmy) Johnson's personality, which can be as jovial and charming as a snake oil salesman's. Worse, this Patriot team isn't going to win two Super Bowls any time soon... - Ron Borges, Boston Globe, 11/22/01"

and Borges again

"Certainly there were questions to be asked after the Patriots completed the first two rounds of the NFL Draft and came away with two defensive linemen and a tight end, apparently drafting under the theory that if you don't get it right the first time, just repeat yourself.

that's what they appeared to do in the first round when New England selected highly rated University of Miami defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and Georgia tight end Ben Watson with picks No. 21 and 32, respectively, thereby ignoring the two top-rated running backs, two of the top five cornerbacks, and two of the top half-dozen wide receivers to take players at positions in which they recently invested previous No. 1 picks
"

I love that he thought we shouldn't take another DL because we have recently taken one in first round. Because, as you know, only one DL plays at a time.

Not sure if he was referencing Seymour or Warren, but that 3 man front of first rounders was incredible for several years.

Doubt we ever see anything like it again. 3 high end DL picks who all panned out. So rare.

Seymour:
- Drafted in 2001
- Started from 2001-2008 before being traded
- Accumulated 85 AV during his 8 years with NE (10.6/yr)

Warren
- Drafted in 2003
- Started from 2003-2009
- Accumulated 50 AV during his 8 years with NE (6.3/yr)

Wilfork
- Drafted in 2004
- Started from 2004-2014
- Accumulated 102 AV during his 11 years with NE (9.3/yr)

I mean..that's frigging amazing production from those three guys combined, and those draft idiots thought that it was poor drafting?
