Given how little we should expect from rookies this year and how much Izzo was a disappointment last year LaCosse opting out actually sets them back quite a bit at the position. In 2-3 years we might have a top 15, top 10 hopefully, TE room given the recent investment there but this year LaCosse was probably going to have a starting role. Yikes.

Was he though? He could have been easily cut at the end of training camp. I don’t think he was a lock by any means for the Patriots roster.

This year? You'd be relying on Izzo who basically was benched the last half of last year and Vitale who isn't a true in-line guy. Oh and the rookies but rookie TEs rarely contribute anyway and they've had no off-season. LaCosse was their best true veteran in-line option.

I have a feeling that with Cam Newton as QB, the offense wouldn’t be running as much power I formation as they have in the past anyways. I’m expecting a completely different structure this season.

@bypatforde: Prominent industry source: "I think by the end of the week the fall sports will be postponed in all conferences."

huge ramifications on 2021 draft if this happens, either gamble on development up until last season or loss of a year of development for those who needed it
The idea is moving to the spring not cancelling season. If that happens, there's still a season to look at.

Exactly, it's not like the NFL will keep the draft in April

Lacosse was above replacement level? I defer to you but that’s not what my eyes saw.

No, no he wasn’t and that’s the scary part. But when your most experienced guy and who can do things at a below average level (a below average replacement level) leaves that makes a bad situation even worse.
