I did not think calling out a player after a game could get worse, but it can and it hilarious.

Can you imaging blaming your QB for making a read wrong, before you have reviewed the tape?
Now can you imaging blaming the GOAT who is famous for knowing exactly what the defense is doing...before looking at the tape...after your first game together...

I would love to have asked Brady 10 questions about BB before this season and then the same 10 questions after it.

It would make the media crazy, but I don't recall Belichick ever calling out a player on his team. It's always something like: "We obviously didn't make enough plays today; we'll review the film and work on the things that need to be worked on." And leave it at that. Why say more?

Yep.

Of course, Brady being who he is, he's not in any way looking back, he's always looking ahead. But man he might be asking himself some tough questions come January.

It's certainly conceivable that both the Bucs and Pats could finish 8-8. If that happens, one team's coach gets to keep his job.

In the beginning of the game, I was rooting for Brady to do well. I watched the guy for a really long time and he's a part of a lot of great memories for me.

But, when the first INT happened with the miscommunication/misunderstanding with the receiver, I have to say I felt a little bit of joy. Sort of a "You see, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence".

Different topic, maybe I'm so used to BB - but I was really surprised at Ariens calling out Brady in the press conference. Why? What is the point of that? You'd have to think that would really get under Brady's skin (as it would anybody).

But wait, isn't he 85th all time in wins?
Dude, really? You assumed a player could somehow signal while running his route what he was going to do, like, I don't know, with hand signals, so pardon us if your takes get some pushback.

I'm as pro-Brady as the come, but:

1--the throw was still high and sailed. Your whole argument hinges on, I think, that if Evans contined then that was no INT (seriously, watch it below.) Had he continued there was STILL safety help there. He was throwing into double-coverage. QBs like Brady do that, because they trust themselves, but that wasn't a good throw.

2--who's fault was the pick-6

All that said, Arians still should shut his mouth.

I'm not surprised that they looked out of sync yesterday. And I think that being out of sync highlighted Brady's faults and weaknesses in a way that we're all very familiar with. I also think, though, that it did not allow his strengths to come out the way that they will before the season is over. The borderline intentional grounding and throw aways and the tendency to throw it to the other team in big spots sometimes by trying to make a play is stuff we're familiar with. We're also familiar with the incredible preparation and ability to sometimes read his receiver's minds and feel pressure and come up big in the big moments, and that's going to happen this year too.

I'm sure he's really feeling some culture shock today. 19 years in a very distinctive system that has control of all the details and locks everything down and now he's in a situation where the coach seems fine saying whatever is on his mind, and trying to figure out how to shoulder the blame of a loss with some other players who played poorly in a town that probably views its football a bit differently than the Patriots were viewed. I'm sure it's weird and in some sense sucks for him but I also imagine there are some respects in which he find it liberating and refreshing.

That's a good team with good players and the defense actually looked faster at times and better than I expected. Their coach is a bit of a schmuck and they play undisciplined in a way that is probably going to be good for a loss or two that a more disciplined coach and team wouldn't have to endure. My hunch is that they played a tough team yesterday and that they and Brady are going to be fine.

Like everyone here I felt different watching than I thought I would before the season began. Before the game my attitude, which I think I've posted about, was fuck Tom Brady he left I root for the laundry I don't give a shit and hope he throws seven interceptions. Watching I felt the exact opposite. I hated seeing him struggle. I'm very much a laundry first guy. But I wasn't yesterday for some reason that took me by surprise.

So how many more weeks until we hear from a reporter “sources close to Brady want Ariens Fired”

I say 2 weeks max.

I’m expecting they’ll handle Carolina but if they don’t or go 0-3 or 0-4, this thing will unravel quickly, IMO.

Isn't is all possible that it has boiled down to the fact that Brady is 43 years old? No one, and certainly not Arians, can fix a player who is losing it. It was one game, against one of the best teams in the league, so maybe he will bounce back and have a decent year ....or ....maybe the obvious decline in skills he exhibited last year will accelerate this year? If that's the case, it won't be pretty.

Yup. And I think it is this. I don’t care how pliable Brady is. 43 is 43 and he’s slowing down. I hope the Bucs are prepared for the volatility in his performance. And if his physical skills declined precipitously beyond his control, that’ll only frustrate him more.

Astute reply to Stroud's tweets: Arians is getting ahead of this by blaming Brady, because if they underperform he is going to get fired.

That grit and determination quote is straight-up embarrassing. I said it at the time and I'll stick by it that TB is a bad fit for the Arians' offense. To me, it just doesn't look like he has the touch, accuracy, or power to lay out a deep ball that his receivers catch in stride, and at best it's gonna be a Flacco ball. Perhaps there's an internal struggle regarding the gameplan and play-calling between TB, Arians, and Leftwich. The early part of the game looked much more like a TB/NE offense and later in the game the deep balls came out. "Everything we did we thought we were ready for." kinda sounds like a pissy answer from a coach who let the QB do things his way with bad results.

Look, I don't disagree with most of what you are saying. It just seemed to me that on a timing play like that, if I see the safety coming over the top, I'm either going to quickly hook around and establish eye contact with my QB, or haul ass to help break up the pick. Evans just kinda gave up.

How hard is it to Imitate BB?

"We need to review what we did wrong, correct it and do better next week".
Media: "Brady?"
"All of us"

why more coaches dont do this astonishes me.

I think I watched every down of TB's Patriots career, this is not a trait of his that comes to mind when thinking about his play at all. It is pretty much a signature of the Arians system, however.

he has thrown a pick 6 in each of his last 3 games. You can't blame it all on him being 43, but my dad always used to say. "Getting old sucks"

I thought his deep ball looked really good yesterday. It was the shorter stuff he had trouble with. They also couldn't run the ball worth a damn.

Fair enough, I definitely agree that age probably has more to do with his current level of performance than anything else. But, I was responding to the idea that one of his "faults and weaknesses" that we're all "very familiar with" is his penchant for interceptions in big games/big spots. I don't think that is a Tom Brady issue. I think the idea that yesterday was just a run of the mill rough early season game for Brady is absurd. His play has declined and he is not in an ideal system for his skills. I think that will continue to be an issue for Tampa.

Here
I 100% knew this would happen with Arians. He is an obnoxious, off-the-cuff alpha male who thinks he knows more than anyone else. Reminds me of Ditka, but with way less football intellect. It’s like Tom Brady being coached by Fireman Ed.

I agree with you 100%. I also think that as much as BB drove him crazy, he probably is shaking his head at the lack of accountability and preparation he sees with the Bucs. I've watched way too much TB football over they years. What you saw yesterday was pretty much par for the course. They will win their fair share of games, because they do have legit talent on both sides of the ball, but they are just a poorly coached team. It's been that way with the past several regimes....

He's played in a lot of big games so maybe that has the tendency to make it only seem that way. I guess you only get a chance to throw 35 playoff interceptions if you've been to the playoffs a lot. But some of them were huge. The one that jumps to mind is the one with four minutes left in Super Bowl 38. It's easily forgotten because of the fireworks that came next but that easily could have been a championship losing play.

I can't believe that anyone who has watched Brady's career thinks of "forces the ball in big moments". That is literally incomprehensible to me.

I said it in the context of actually saying the opposite of how I think that it is coming across. It was in the context of saying that I think you can easily look at some of his plays like yesterday and emphasize them if you want to write his obituary like some seem to be doing here. The Atlanta Super Bowl pick, the second pick in the Chiefs AFCCG (and what could have been the third), and some of the other picks -- they would have stood out much more if he hadn't subsequently authored some unbelievable greatness.

So, before the thread spins out of control on the suggestion that I don't think Brady is the all time greatest QB and specifically the all time best clutch football player ever, he is. My point is that yesterday displays some stuff that's not all that unusual and from which he has pretty much always recovered. But if you're looking at it in a very small sample size you can be misled. That was my point.

And he couples that macho grandstanding bullshit with a really bad feel for when to throw a challenge, shaky clock management, and a penchant antagonizing the officials in postgame pressers.

Arians has been getting by on an "offensive guru" rep, but his teams are poorly-coached. When you finish every year at or near the top of the "Most Penalized Teams" list, that is on the coach.

Tommy deserves better. He should have gone to the Niners. Shanny ain't Belichick, but he's better that Arians.

Otherwise we're not going to have a separately named "game day" thread, as folks wanted yesterday.

Folks, quickly post your thoughts below.
Yeah I hear that. Today, this thread has been a mixed bag of "real" and game thread type posts. We were reacting to Arians' press conference as it happened, so there's some valid game thready-ness to it. The only solution to prevent cross posting might be to lock the game thread during the week, or create a new one each week. But there's naturally going to be a good deal of drive by posting given the subject, as much as we try to avoid that here.

I'd make it all one big megathread of Tompa Bay.

This is still a Boston sports board. Tom is no longer in Boston. It's a tricky situation, but one thread feels like enough for Tompa.

Bill Belichick somehow has only won NFL coach of the year one time more than Bruce Arians.

Anyway, as I mentioned in the game thread, I'll root for TB until he's no longer playing so I hope this was just rustiness and not the inevitable decline. But this is part of the reason why I never thought he would actually leave. A year older plus new coach plus new teammates, there's just a lot of variables there and I thought, as much as he was sick of certain aspects of being on the Pats, BB maybe chief among them, that he would recognize that his best chance to win another ring was to stick with the greatest coach of all time for another year or so.

I literally can't imagine BB saying any of those words in front of a camera
