Mike McCarthy makes me think of coaching hires you knew weren’t going to work out the minute they were made.

Who else qualifies for this? Off the top of my head I can think of:

Eric Mangini w the Browns
Rex Ryan w the Bills
The second Art Shell Raiders Experiment
Freddie Kitchens w the Browns
Jim Tomsula with the Niners (this one was so brutal I almost felt badly for the guy)
Not sure if you meant it for this thread, but Patricia comes to mind. Honestly there have been so many bad coaches it’s hard to even remember them all. I’d need a list of all the hires from the last 15-20 years.

Adam Gase’s introductory press conference as head coach of the Jets was a harbinger of bad things to come.

Don't look now, but that Pats are only one game behind the TB powerhouse after having arguably the harder schedule.
And the pats have been way more impacted by covid or they'd very likely have the same record if not better

Jets HC intro press conferences are historically Jetsy.
Lou Holtz did magic tricks and didn't last the season.
Bill belichick had other plans.

One thing I'm not sure I've seen mentioned anywhere, Brady now has 297 career starts. Assuming he starts the last two weeks of the season, he'll become the all-time NFL leader in that category, surpassing Brett Favre.

That should just about do it for anyone rooting against Tom.

Why doesn't Dungy, supposedly a great coach, understand that the RESULTS are what matters?

It's like a baseball guy saying Vince Coleman is tougher to defend than David Ortiz because he could also beat you with his speed. It's fucking stupid.

Dungy is one of the most overrated coaches in American sports history, maybe only outdone by Mike Scoscia or however the fuck you spell that dumb name.

There’s a debate with Brady or Bill, who was the reason for their success.

There is no debate with Dungy and Manning.

This just further illustrates how damn good the Pats run was. Even Tony Dungy, one of the nicest men in football, can’t get over how effing good TB and those Pats teams were.

Dungy also said something in the past about Joe Gibbs being his toughest coaching opponent (this was old Joe Gibbs, not Gibbs in his prime) and not BB. He's a troll.

Joe Gibbs is a phenomenal coach, Three SBs with three different QBs. That's not nearly as goofy as listing Tommy as 6th.

Hell yeah Gibbs was a good coach, but Dungy never coached against that version of Gibbs; he coached against the old version of Gibbs who went 30-34 from 2004 to 2007.

In other news, Tony Dungy is confused why the Patriots didn't make the playoffs with 11 rushing TDs from Cam Newton.

Dungy vs Brady (including playoffs)
Reg. Season
- Nov 30, 2003: NE 38, Ind 34. Brady: 26-35, 236 yds, 2 td, 2 int
- Sep 9, 2004: NE 27, Ind 24. Brady: 26-38, 335 yds, 3 td, 1 int
- Nov 7, 2005: Ind 40, NE 21. Brady: 25-40, 285 yds, 3 td, 0 int
- Nov 5, 2006: Ind 27, NE 20. Brady: 20-35, 201 yds, 0 td, 4 int
- Nov 4, 2007: NE 24, Ind 20. Brady: 21-32, 255 yds, 3 td, 2 int

Post Season
- Jan 18, 2004: NE 24, Ind 14. Brady: 22-37, 237 yds, 1 td, 1 int
- Jan 16, 2005: NE 20, Ind 3. Brady: 18-27, 144 yds, 1 td, 0 int
- Jan 21, 2007: Ind 38, NE 34. Brady: 21-34, 232 yds, 1 td, 1 int

So against Brady, Dungy was 3-5. Average score: NE 26, Ind 25. Tot Brady stat line: 179-278, 1,925 yds, 6.9 y/a, 14 td, 11 int, 84.9 rating

Dungy vs Rodgers
- Oct 19, 2008: GB 34, Ind 14. Rodgers: 21-28, 186 yds, 6.6 y/a, 1 td, 0 int, 104.2 rating

So he had to coach against Brady eight times and Rodgers only once in his whole career. Seems a bit disingenuous to suggest that it was harder for him to coach against Rodgers than Brady, given that he only had to do it once vs. Rodgers but eight times vs. Brady. Though to be fair, even though the Pats got the better of his Colts, Brady's overall stat line isn't super impressive. So maybe that's what Dungy is thinking about. "Hey we did a good job against Brady even though their teams beat us more often."

Or maybe he's just remembering the most recent games against Brady. Last 3 matchups: 2-1 Indy. And Brady's stat line over those three games is pretty bad: 62-101, 688 yds, 6.8 y/a, 4 td, 7 int, 65.9 rating. So maybe he felt like he had figured Brady out by then so the "freshest" games in his memory were of Indy not having too difficult a time dealing with him.

Who knows.

I think he coached against Elway once. Not sure about Steve Young. If he is making a hypothetical list I don't even get the point.

Why was Brady's response to post a pathetic Colts banner from six years after Dungy retired? Surely there are plenty of pathetic Colts banners from Dungy's tenure as coach.

Even after all the glorious things about the Pats' 20 year run of greatness, I'm still white hot furious that the stupid Colts beat them twice in that 2006 season when the Pats had no receivers.

He’s mocking the organization; not just the coach.

Anyway. Dungy had a pretty awesome record with Manning. 5 losses to one team has to be significant.

Dungy is not a nice person. He's very good at couching terrible ideas in a polite manner, while simultaneously insinuating that anyone who disagrees with him is wrong and probably hell-bound. But he's sanctimonious and mean-spirited. And he's cruel to people he thinks are icky: he went out of his way to say that while he'd be fine with a wife-beater like Ray Rice on his team, Michael Sam was unacceptable.

Brady now leads the NFL in average air yards per attempt while ranking 29th in yards after catch/attempt. He's thriving at age 43 in the exact type of offense doubters spent the last 20 years saying he'd never be able to play in.

Depending upon who one considers the QB of record for the Lions in their 47-7 debacle, one of the following will be correct:

1.) Backup Chase Daniel, who took the majority of snaps at QB after Stafford left with an ankle injury after having thrown only 3 passes, became the 118th QB beaten by Tom Brady (out of 125 total). Or:

2.) Matt Stafford became the 102nd QB to have a losing record against Brady (Pats went 1-1 against the Stafford and the Lions, including a loss in Patricia's first season as Detriot's head coach).

Brady now: 375-569 (65.9%), 4,234 yds, 36 td, 11 int, 7.4 y/a, 101.0 rating

Last 3 games: 68-95 (71.6%), 934 yds, 8 td, 0 int, 9.8 y/a, 130.8 rating

It appears he's getting things tuned up at just the right time.

The NFL looks silly anointing Kyler Murray to the Pro Bowl when there were two games remaining on the schedule. Murray laid an egg on the same day a snubbed Tom Brady throws for 4 TDs and a perfect passer rating. Brady's effort clinches a playoff berth, while Murray's Cardinals are puking their way to a disappointing finish.

Why not wait until, you know, that actual season is over before bestowing season-representing honors?

Yeah, that’s kind of weird. Murray had a long stretch of not being that good even before this.

I never understood why they do this. Or when there’s still five minutes in a basketball game and they announce who the player of the game is. I’m like...uh...the game isn’t over yet.

Murray from Week 11-14 wasn’t running and wasn’t throwing for many yards. It’s likely that he was probably injured but he certainly wasn’t great in that stretch. This award is based off of his start and probably the Philly game right before they made the decision. Ultimately, Brady has been to a million of these so fine to spread the wealth but it’s weird to award before the season is over.

I agree with the idea of waiting until the season is over to select those who will be recognized as pro-bowlers for their work done during, you know, the regular season. It's nonsense to choose them until the season is over.

But as to your point above, Brady also had a 4-game stretch where he was bad and Tampa went 1-3. Weeks 9-12, Brady put up this line: 103-166 (62.1%), 1,111 yds, 6.7 y/a, 8 td, 7 int, 80.2 rating.

So like I said, both he and Murray have had some rough patches (to be fair, so has Russell Wilson, from weeks 7-10, when he had 9 td, 7 int, and a 90.6 rating, while Seattle went 1-3), but all those guys have been great. Clearly the top 4 QBs in the NFC this year are, in some order, Rodgers, Wilson, Brady, and Murray.

Rodgers isn't in that order. He's the clear #1 this year. (and he's actually giving Mahomes a run for his money in the MVP race, which is really saying something)

Then Wilson, Brady, and Murray fight it out for the last 3 spots.

Well, sure, but your two posts are separated by yesterday's games, which made a huge difference in the race. Rodgers had 4 TDs in a blowout win over the 10-5 Titans. Meanwhile, Mahomes seemingly tried to give the game away to the lowly Falcons. Right or wrong, Vegas had Mahomes as a favorite prior to Sunday.

Rodgers should hold the line from here with only one game to go. KC has the #1 seed on lock, and Andy Reid has a history of resting his starters in such situations. The fact that voters see more awards in Pat's future will probably help Aaron's case as well.

His team is really lousy, and I'm not saying he is really in the conversation, but Deshaun Watson is having an amazing season. 4,400 yards, 30 TDs to 6 INTs, leading the league in Y/A and AY/A while completing 70 percent of his passes. Also has rushed for more than 400 yards. Houston ranks 30th in rushing, and they of course traded away the best WR in football in the off-season.

In a related note, Brandin Cooks is just 16 yards away from joining Brandon Marshall as the only people to have 1,000+ receiving yards for four different teams.
