Olson is a great fit but if the A's don't want Gleyber and/or Voit as part of the return (I have no idea) it becomes a trickier fit. Clarke Schmidt seems like he could be tempting there too, he is similar to Kaprielian, first round righties who can't stay healthy but if they ever do, big upside. I would sweeten my above offer to Beane slightly as follows:

Gleyber
Voit
Beane's choice of 2 of 3 of Schmidt, Deivi, Gil
Oswaldo Cabrera

If people recall, when NY traded with OAK for Sonny Gray a few years ago, it was a situation a bit similar to this except at the July 31 deadline instead of the November 19 one. In both cases, NY seems to be the team most generously bidding for the A with 2/2+ seasons left, but Beane and Cashman have known each other so long and so well that they take every second they can, or at least that's what happened with Gray. Teams generally do not give up huge packages for first basemen and his value will only drop if they hold him into the season, but NY has a lot of badly fitting talent and can decidedly overpay.

2022 is looking like as close to a 'go-for-it' season as I think Cashman (and Hal) is comfortable with, we will see what that actually ends up meaning, not just in money but in which prospects he moves. My plan above holds on to most of the top prospects but if there are guys who the NY front office think will be relative duds (hello Jorge Mateo), now is the time to sell high.

Peraza would hurt, and would IMO basically force NY to sign one of the FA SSs this winter, which it seems like they planned on doing anyway. Voit needs to go, Deivi is still very young but was a complete mess for all of 2021, Wells no one thinks can stick at C, and hopefully the OF is Lockridge or Dunham and not Pereira.

Maybe they could send him back to the Cubs for Ian Happ, that might be a better fit for both guys.

I have mixed feelings about that deal and am not sure I want it to be true. I love Olson, but I hate the idea of losing Oswaldo. Can't have too many Oswaldos. It feels painful, but that probably means it is a fair deal.

I won't be surprised at all if Gleyber is playing 2b next season with DJ as the utility guy playing most days and bouncing between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and occasionally DH. If so, I think JA's binky Gittens is going to get screwed. Again. So maybe he gets traded somewhere too.

Edit: I do like the idea of Happ though, or someone like that.

Garcia has insane power but is really far away, Pereira is one of my favorite few prospects currently and I would hate to lose him. On the other hand, maybe that frees up a 40 man spot for Brandon Lockridge.

I don't see Cashman agreeing to give up that much for a 1b. Could be wrong but I can't see Wells and Peraza in the same package that includes a high ceiling major league player ready to slot in.

If NY decides OAK is being unreasonable with Olson demands, everyone expects them to pivot to Rizzo. I have been ignoring Freddie Freeman to NY rumors because I assumed he’d sign back with ATL, but ATL’s top offer to him currently is 5/135, which seems low given the rest of the market. Maybe NY could offer a 6th year there, 6/162, and save the prospect capital from the proposed Olson deal if it happened.

If we pretend there's a new limit due to the CBA for bonus penalties, call it $260m, I'm guessing that's our theoretical cap. So, $28-32 to Seager doesn't allow for a Freeman contract unless we offload ~$10m and even then, we're so tight that only minor moves can be made.

I guess that's why when I hear Marte + Seager, I'll believe Hal & Cash will spend the money when I see it.

It's at least partly posturing but they do have different ways to go, some don't involve any of the SSs. My latest plan (in post 1 here and on the previous page) didn't include any of the SSs, although it did include Verlander who is now gone, back to HOU.

I for one will be excited to see Gio at SS full time next season.

Just kidding. I'm perfectly fine with a stopgap defensive SS who can easily be moved aside when and if one of the youngsters is ready to go.

Same. We can add offense elsewhere, especially if we upgrade 1B and CF and Sanchez goes from awful to bad.

One reason often given for SFG's shocking 107 win season this year was their MLB-high 16 coaches, and tonight Cashman announced that NY would follow that trend, they will have three hitting coaches and three pitching coaches and they expect to announce names soon, so they'll be up to 13 total MLB coaches.

Hopefully one of those three pitching coaches is the fully dedicated bullpen usage guy I have been suggesting because Boone truly has terrible instincts here and is not getting better. Take it off his hands, I have to think with three pitching coaches that will be done at least to some extent. To remind, my suggestion was to have the dedicated bullpen usage guy decide all pitching moves, who to warm up and when, and when to bring them in. Maybe give Boone a certain (small) number of potential disagreements and in those split votes, Matt Blake makes the decision. That could all be done very quickly in the dugout each time, there's a way to make the team a few wins better without adding payroll.

Anyway, adding more coaches is one way teams can spend money to help themselves outside of CBA constraints, NY tends to take advantage of those, this one a bit behind trend but better late than never.

Under 24 hours now, sticking with my prediction from the other thread of Green/Luetge/Andujar traded for guys who don't need to be protected, Odor DFAd (this last one is a bit wishful thinking but come on already), and Ridings, Pereira, Cabrera and Marinaccio protected.

Also NY could preemptively move a couple of the more likely to be taken in the rule 5 draft guys, like Lockridge and Breaux or Weissert, if they decide not to protect them themselves.

As always, Brian and minions, you're welcome for the free input, hope you don't get the storm we had here earlier when you're out tonight and good luck with the moves tomorrow.

Less than two hours to go, still radio (Twitter) silence from NY.

Just not announced yet, they are trickling in from around MLB now. Cabrera definitely added, that’s all we know so far.

That above deal is just to clear 40 man spaces, a rookie ball pitcher and a 2021 12th round pick in return. There must be more coming still…

Good for them, cutting bait on Odor finally. I'm surprised that Andujar survived over Wade and Frazier, but really all of them needed to go. We still don't know what is going on/was going on with Clint medically, whether it was some kind of post-concussion syndrome or something else.

JP Sears is mildly interesting, a 26 year old lefty that NY got from SEA in 2017 as part of a clearing 40 man space deal for Nick Rumbelow (trade was Nov 18, so the exact same time of year). He started ten games down the stretch in AAA and was quite good, congrats to him even if it's not super likely he survives the winter still on the roster.

"Across 10 starts and 53.1 innings in Triple-A, Sears put together a 2.87 ERA, a 11.0 K/9 rate against a 1.9 BB/9 rate, and a 0.97 WHIP. He also ended up with a meaningless, but still fun, undefeated 7-0 record at the level."

Copying this from the 40 man thread, NY now has 24 pitchers protected and just 16 position players, clearly they plan a bunch of moves still this winter.

========================================

SP (12): Cole, Taillon, Montgomery, Germán, Severino, Cortes, Schmidt, Gil, Garcia, Sears, Medina, Gomez

RP (12): Chapman, Green, Loaisiga, King, Holmes, Cortes, Peralta, Rodriguez, Abreu, Ridings, Marinaccio, Britton

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (8): Torres, LeMahieu, Urshela, Voit, Andujar, Gittens, Peraza, Cabrera

OF (6): Judge, Gallo, Stanton, Hicks, Florial, Pereira

========================================

Also my man Gittens survived!! For now, anyway, fingers crossed.

OK, so now we know some things about the NY offseason, one is that they are protecting a lot of pitchers, 24 currently.

SP (12): Cole, Taillon, Montgomery, Germán, Severino, Cortes, Schmidt, Gil, Garcia, Sears, Medina, Gomez

RP (12): Chapman, Green, Loaisiga, King, Holmes, Cortes, Peralta, Rodriguez, Abreu, Ridings, Marinaccio, Britton

Britton will go on the 60 day IL if and when spring training opens, they expect him to maybe have a chance to come back late in the season and then he is a FA, so really 23. Taillon is recovering from ankle surgery but supposed to be back close to the start of the season, maybe just a few weeks behind. Rotation as of now:

Cole
(Taillon)
Montgomery
Severino
Cortes
German

Cortes and German both have options, neither would or should be thrilled to go to Scranton but NY has no roster issues there if all six are healthy.

Also on the 40 man, all with options: King, Gil, Schmidt, Deivi, Medina, Sears, Gomezz

Bullpen guys out of options:

Lucas Luetge
Albert Abreu
Joely Rodriguez
Clay Holmes
Chad Green
Aroldis Chapman

That doesn't include Loaisiga or Wandy (one option left each) plus they need a long guy and some slots with guys they can option up and down. This is why I am still pretty sure that by Opening Day Green and Luetge will be moved, just one year left of Green but I bet they can get something good for him. Also I am still not quite sure why they brought back Joely at any price with no options but presumably all will be revealed (or not).

Medina is down to one option so maybe he will be a big league bullpen factor this year also, and Ridings should be given every chance this year, he looked incredible in his short stint last year but they saved an option year by sending him down after he shined as a Covid replacement (never added to the 40 man until today). He looks like something out of a video game, sitting 99-100 with an even better slider and a 42/4 K/BB ratio in AA/AAA this year. Marinaccio also had ridiculous minor league numbers, so it is a crowded, competitive pen already.

Another player who will probably get a decent chance around the league but was stuck in a backup role here. He started to show flashes in 2021.

So they have Velazquez and Wade, yes? Some pretty useful bench pieces or maybe starters if need be.

They’re pretty similar players, both can steal bases and play solid D, neither can hit much.
