Let’s see how long they rest Harden. His legs look shot right now and the injury is affecting everything.

I don’t think they care about dropping to the 4 seed if they can rest Harden and Embiid. This is not a team that gives up, as we saw against Miami. Maxey was terrific last night, especially in the fourth quarter when he hit all five of his shots, blocked a shot, put the team on his shoulders, smiling all the way.

They go west now for Lakers, Clippers and Suns. 0-3 will drop them to the fourth seed. But they have a great record on the road so 2-1 is possible. Embiid will play in LA but I suspect he will next rest in Phoenix.
I didn't get a chance to watch last night but Maxey has been pretty awesome this season. Not really getting enough National NBA attention.

If this group can beat Miami they should easily get 2 LA wins with effort alone.

I get what lovegtm is saying, the Harden/Morey thing would make me itchy if I was a Sixers fan. It feels like an ALL IN move for this season and the EC is just loaded with minefields. Even Toronto is going to be a slugfest in the playoffs

All in good fun. I'm terrified of the Sixers, if I'm being perfectly honest.
Doc likes to cut his player usage to eight in the playoffs but this team seems better when he goes deeper and gives Shake Milton more run. Harden can’t go 40 minutes and be effective in the fourth quarter. Not any more. Doc knows this. Morey doesn’t. I wonder how that will play out.

The East is so deep this year, as we fans living in the northeast know very well. Brooklyn, Boston and Philly, the defending champion Bucks, bleeping’ Miami. Toronto, Cleveland on a second level. Trae Young is lurking somewhere. It’s going to be excruciating to watch.

Against Toronto the other night, trailing by two with 7.2 seconds left, Harden drove to the hoop, into three defenders, while Harris was alone in the corner, hands up, waiting for a pass that never came. Harden still thinks he is the man with games on the line. He got called for a charge.

If I was a betting man I'd just take Phoenix and watch the East beat itself up to bits

Shake is someone that will end up on a bottom feeder over the next few years and put up 18-19ppg as a starter

I think he is feeling some initial trade pressure to deliver some heroics. That close out offense will be deadly if he figures out that his best value is as a distributor and secondary scorer in late game situations.

I haven’t looked back but is this a real thing? Doc used his bench more than most in LA and regularly went 9 deep with the Clippers and here as well. Are you referring to his time in Philly?

I mentioned this in the other thread, Harden also missed 2 FTs with PHI trailing by 1 and 2:26 left. That and the two TOs + one charge that Harden committed to start the 4Q made me wonder if PHI is trying very hard to avoid BRK in the first round by dropping to the 4th seed. Although if this were true, it would be funny if the Basketball Gods decreed that MIL ended up the 1 seed, PHI the 4, CHI (fully healthy) the 5, and BRK the 8.

I didn't know this but Harden apparently wasn't called for a charge on the play you mentioned - he was called for a Flagrant 1 elbow to the head of Boucher. Clip below.

Yes. His bench is thinner now after trading away Drummond and Curry. We are back to the bench killing them when Embiid takes a blow. Doc has threatened to shorten his rotation in the playoffs but you’re right. He has usually played at least nine players throughout his career. Since the trade, this is the second biggest concern for Doc, trusting his thinner bench. Jordan has been virtually worthless as Embiid’s caddy.

Harden played 42 minutes against Toronto, which is insane. Off the bench that night, Niang played 29 minutes, Green 16, Jordan 11 and Shake just nine. Last night, with Embiid and Harden resting, Doc played nine guys substantial minutes and Korkmaz, who has been buried lately, scored 18 points in 20 minutes. 76ers had over 100 minutes in bench time.

Shortening Harden’s minutes to 36 in the playoffs might be wise, considering his weak left hammy. I just see this season ending with Harden hopping off the court on one leg.

The flagrant was awful. From what I have seen, Harden regularly puts his head down and bulls to the basket. Head down, not looking to pass. Right now, he seems unsure of what’s best for this new team he’s on. BigSoxFan said it best a few posts up. Harden needs to distribute more and shoot less.

He still has time to figure this out.

I do share your injury concerns though. Harden's lack of conditioning and general physical maintenance of his own body has bitten him before.

nobody really cares about seeding. If you are good, home court doesn’t matter.

Since we’re talking 76ers, you know there’s some drama somewhere. After Giannis and the Bucks won the game in Philly on Tuesday night, Embiid ate some sour grapes in the locker room, saying the game was decided at the start of the fourth quarter as he sat on the bench. He suggested “match the minutes” on the floor, him and Giannis. Seemed to me like he was knocking Doc‘s rotations and also speaking to MVP voters but maybe I am reading his words wrong. I always think pessimistically about this franchise. They keep finding great players but the 76ers always lack either the right mix or enough quality depth.

Maxey is becoming the mismatch opposing offenses seek out. The bench is thin. Embiid shines through all of the erratic play. He is so gifted. Wilt rarely dribbled the ball. This guy can grab a rebound and dribble across halfcourt. Sometimes he goes straight to the hoop, losing the ball off his knee, or tripping to the floor. But his bull strength is impressive. Nobody muscles Joel when he backs in to the hoop. But it’s only two points in a three-point world.

At Detroit tonight. Pistons can be tough. A loss would not surprise me. Then rest people down the stretch. Fourth seed will be ours!

Doc being honest after last night’s debacle, excerpted from the Inquirer:

After the game, Rivers pushed back on a reporter’s word choice that the bench “struggled.”

“They didn’t struggle,” Rivers said. “They didn’t get a lot of shots, in their defense. I think, during that stretch, it was more James [as the primary shot-taker] than them.”

Philly loses in VanVleet-less Toronto, despite shooting 49/52.8, and making seven more FTs. Embiid’s five TOs (to two assists) were part of 15 turnovers from the starters (bench had only one). Philly might not make it out of the first round if they end up in the four spot and have to play Toronto.

The Raptors are an awful matchup for the Sixers. Maybe this is better for the Gambling thread but let’s just say that I’m REALLY hopeful of this being a first round matchup.

Scottie Barnes is a defensive problem for Harden. While I didn't watch much of the 76ers/Raptors game, Toronto has so many long-armed defenders that can mess with Harden's coma dribblefest drives

When the 76ers ink James to a long-term MAX that anchor will be the finishing touches to The Process.

Embiid torn ligament on shooting hand thumb. Hope he can play through.
He’s playing:
Despite the discomfort, Embiid practiced on Friday and expects to play in Game 4 of the Sixers' first-round playoff series against the Toronto Raptors on Saturday. Embiid was seen wearing a wrap on his right thumb at practice but is determined to play through the injury, sources said.

"He's good," coach Doc Rivers said after practice. "We did a lot of stuff ... we just don't want anybody to hit his arms and hands and all that. But he's fine."

I really don’t understand what Doc is doing. Yesterday he says “we just don't want anybody to hit his arms and hands and all that. But he's fine." And today he says "Yeah, there's concern," he said. "But, you know, it is what it is. The one thing we know [is] it can't get worse."

It can always get worse. Gamesmanship may be at play but it sounds pretty bad. Even if he is able to play through the pain it will likely affect his handle, shooting and rebounding. And as others have mentioned Toronto is going to be continuously hammering Embiid's hands and ripping at the ball.

Maybe it’s just so inviting a target anyway that it’s worth broadcasting so the officials / League office are sure to hear as well?
What can the officials or league officials do when a player chops down on Embiid’s arm/hands? That’s standard contact when a scorer has the ball.

I don't think the goal is to change the definition of a foul, but more raise it as 'point of emphasis'.

As example of what I had in mind in terms of the Cs games, which are all I've had time to watch of late, were a couple plays in both game 1 and 2 where Al or Jaylen or Smart or (and others) swept their arms down on the ball to generate turnovers from KD and KI. I would not have been surprised to see a reach-in called, which I believe can have a knock-on effect in terms of handsy defense vs getting space to do what you want.

So didn't realize that FVV has had hip problems all season; maybe that's why he was getting blown by in the first 3 games of the series.

From all accounts, TOR's size without FVV is really bothering Harden and Maxey. I guess that's how the 76ers end up with 88 points in last night's game. From this article:
In the three wins, Harden averaged 18.3 points, 10.0 assists, and 3.0 turnovers, while converting 7-15 3-pointers. Maxey had averaged 26.6 points on 47.3 percent shooting from deep. That’s the type of production that will help the 76ers win even with Embiid’s injury.
However, in the two losses, the duo has struggled mightily. Harden has averaged 18.5 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.5 turnovers while going 4-14 from downtown. Maxey has struggled just averaging 11.5 points on 1-6 shooting from behind the arc.

76ers announced that 2nd round playoff tickets are on sale now.

I get from a logistics perspective they need to, but woo... between that and Doc blowing a 3-0 lead after all the blown 3-1 leads.... TOR coming back to win this series would be HILARIOUS

Feel terrible for our 76er fan brethren here. But maybe it's time for the Ewing theory to be renamed.

The only way for that to be the case would be if the Sixers won the championship this year with Joel sidelined. I love Embiid, but I'd sign up for that in a heartbeat. If the Harden-Maxey Sixers run the table from this point on with Joel watching in street clothes, you, Simmons, and every other GD C's fan can make all the jokes about how Joel is overrated for all I care. Our graying last championship's baby clock has been ticking for so long she's looking for egg donors at this point.

To be clear, I wasn't trying to intimate that Joel is overrated and was not making light of the injury or its impact on the Sixers. Just saying that you have to hold out hope because you just never know. I'll be rooting for the 76ers unless and until they run up against the Celts.

No worries, I get that. I was just pointing out that Simmons' Ewing Theory came from the Knicks run in the 1999 playoffs, which he believed proved that Ewing was overrated, because they played better without him. Joel may be unlucky, but I don't think anyone would argue that he's overrated. (Or that the Sixers will be better off without him on the court.)

The Ewing Theory isn’t about the player being overrated. It is about the phenomenon that occurs when the team who is missing the star plays with more purpose and energy while the opponent has a mental letdown from going up against a team missing its star. It is very real too.

Agree to disagree. Simmons definitely intends a little slam on the player whenever he invokes this.

Dave introduced me to the Ewing Theory three years ago, and we’ve been tinkering with it like Voltaire and Thoreau ever since. Eventually, we decided that two crucial elements needed to be in place for any situation to qualify for “Ewing” status:

• A star athlete receives an inordinate amount of media attention and fan interest, and yet his teams never win anything substantial with him (other than maybe some early-round playoff series).

• That same athlete leaves his team (either by injury, trade, graduation, free agency or retirement) — and both the media and fans immediately write off the team for the following season.

When those elements collide, you have the Ewing Theory.

» The Ewing Theory (grantland.com)

Looking over this for the first time in years, one of the athletes he cites for this was Drew Bledsoe. I adored Drew back in the day, but there's a very strong argument for changing this to the "Bledsoe Theory".

How does Doc have Embiid playing up 30 with 3 minutes left in a clincher? People have crapped all over Ime for playing guys too long but I don’t think I ever remember him playing a fragile guy like that up by *that* much.

That does suck. I love Embiid.

To me, Doc Rivers is frozen in time smoking his cigar in front of Red Auerbach’s portrait after winning #17 but if I’m a Sixers fan I’m livid that Embiid was still in the game and want Doc’s head to roll.

Strong disagree. The overrated (or at least) overhyped aspect of the star is definitely part of a real Ewing Theory situation. Part of the premise is that the "quote" star is actually something of a fraud. From Simmons' Page 2 days, the criteria are:

  1. A star athlete receives an inordinate amount of media attention and fan interest, and yet his teams never win anything substantial with him (other than maybe some early-round playoff series).

  2. That same athlete leaves his team (either by injury, trade, graduation, free agency or retirement) -- and both the media and fans immediately write off the team for the following season.

Doc spent the day of that game throwing guys he coached 19 years ago under the bus in press conferences... he was VERY in his head about not blowing this lead.

When does Doc pull Embiid…..

Up 25 with 7:12 to go?
Up 27 with 6:23 left?
Up 28 with 5:41?
Up 25 with 4:28?

Those were the dead balls before Embiid’s injury? He’s played about 7,000 possessions this year prior to fracturing his orbital bone……Doc had up to 4 opportunities to know exactly when this fracture would occur.
