Sixth inning of a tied game two is way too early to call a series over but not having watched either of these teams much this year, I am going to say that one looks significantly better than the other in pretty much every phase.

I guess I probably shouldn't have declared that I know what is in a guy's heart or mind based on a reference that I just learned 10 minutes ago. It sure sounds bad, but perhaps there's a usage I don't know about.

But, either way, I'll say this -- what the fuck is MLB thinking putting three medicare eligible people in the same booth of a game? Their combined ages is like 217. Is this really what MLB is hoping for?
They thought they'd relate better to the two managers in the series.

This. Even without the incident today, he should have been in the retirement home years ago.
You guys make a lot of ageist comments. There are so many stupid young and middle-aged baseball booth guys, for one thing and you have Vin Scully, who was still worth a listen in his retirement age, at 88.

I don't know what Kaat was thinking; it was clearly confused and dumb, but as someone who knows what it's like to be on air live, I can tell you it's easy to make goofs. (And I was young when I made mine.)

I am going to take this to heart and try to do better.

To be less crass with the point I made above, I suppose I would put it this way. In no way do think it's impossible for an older announcer to appeal to a younger audience. But listening to these three guys and the things that they seem to think matters to the listener, they have a viewpoint that to my ear sounds as though it would be less likely to appeal to younger views of the game, which I think is important at this moment in time for major league baseball.

Well, I am impressed by your openness. (Really, no snark intended.)
For folks who prefer younger announcers, Orsillo is in the booth for Atlanta/Milwaukee.

Orsillo is younger, but 52. Does he really appeal to a younger audience?

Edit: for the record, I bitched about Tim McCarver a lot, but re-watching some of those 2003-2004 games he was better than I remembered. Even in 2013 he was ok.

Yes, but Pat Summerall was pretty bad in the first Rams SB. It’s a hard job to begin with. I certainly would be good at it and I definitely wouldn’t be good at it at 83 or whatever. People decline at different rates. Some 85 year-olds are super sharp. Some are not. I have no idea about Kaat but he obviously made a huge error today.

Agreed all around. Summerall was horrible in XXXVI.

I really thought the ESPN 2 broadcast of the WC game between the Sox and MFY was great. I'm not exactly the demo that MLB needs either, but I sort of have to believe that kind of informational based approach might appeal to a more information-driven generation.

It was wonderful, in my opinion, and I'm an old lady.
Aren't the Astros annoying? Hope the Rays can beat them.

In particular, I found it refreshing that they didn't spend half the broadcast complaining about how the sport is played today.

These fans are terrible judges of fly balls. That last out was a lazy fly out to right and the crowd acted like it was going into the second deck.

I don't really understand the White Sox bullpen plan at all. You have Kopech and Hendricks, it's 4-4 in the 7th. Why are you not trying to get 3 from those guys and see if you can push across a run or two? Instead it's Bummer and Kimbrel and game over. Brutal mismanagement.

How dare you! Tony LaRussa chiseled the tablet on bullpen management

Would a young edgy announcer really work in baseball? Mike Monaco is really young and he pretty much sounds like Sean McDonough. I can’t imagine what a baseball announcer that would appeal to a younger audience would sound like.

PBP doesn’t matter. But the problem with analysts is that the best ones are recently retired players… who at youngest are mid-30s

This series is a reminder that barring a Red Sox run through the AL playoffs, I'll be rooting for the NL in the series this year.
Unless the Dodgers get there, then I'll be rooting for a meteor strike.

"The Dodgers got Scherzer and Turner and they made it to the World Series; shocking, unbelievable, can't believe they got there, who'd a thunk it!!"

Don't know. Late 90s MFY made 5 of 6

edit ... the 71-75 A's
Man was that team loaded..................they made a run at the Royals for the division in 1976 and almost got there..........then Finley traded away the whole team and that was that.

I distinctly remember posters on the Main Board saying the 2021 team was “a Kimbrel trade away from going to the World Series” but cheaped out. Yikes.
Oh, I wish I could remember the poster who used to threaten me with that, knowing I can't stand Kimbrel. Come on, own up and identify yourself, whoever you are!

I was the one agitating for Craig at every turn and making fun of your fears. I admit it. Though I’m not the one who said we cheaped out by not getting him. Even I wouldn’t have paid that price.

It took until inning #3 in game #3 for the White Sox to look competitive, but I still feel like this is just the setup for LaRussa to look like a bigger idiot when he inevitably ends his team's season with a bad decision.
