Between the 2 of them, they should. But yeah, I would think that's what the actual center is for.

I agree with Grant's role ending up as being as big as his play warrants, though.
Yeah maybe he will be terrible and we look at other option. I still that that other option isn’t going to be playing 4 guards for long stretches.
Yeah this "power forward" stuff is 1985 talk. Celtics have Al, TL, and Kanter that can play big. They have a bunch of other guys that can be the biggest wing on the floor, most notably Tatum. Grant is matchup or injury depth.
We are using the term “4” not to advocate signing Calvin Natt or Lonnie Shelton. It’s shorthand for “versatile frontcourt player who won’t cause a layup line when matched up against opponents bigs.”

It sounds like we're talking about needing a beef player in addition to the center, which to me is a distinction without a difference.

Sure, some nights we'll throw Grant in there because some team has a beef guy at 4, and we don't want to put Tatum through the ringer. That's a role. Grant is a role player.

I don't feel like I'm Grant bashing at all when I say that I hope that he doesn't see the court very much. Same as I'd really rather not have Nance, SloMo, Washington, or those others getting real minutes either. Had we brought them in, they'd be depth. Just like Grant is.

TL is way better of a small ball center, even if people go small against us. And if they go stupid small, then we have like a million wings to attack that.

Grant is a role player, not a rotation player. This shouldn't be a controversial take here.

Edit: yeah maybe SloMo cracks the rotation, but I'm not interested in any of those other guys.
for sure Jimbo.

a healthy Rob Williams upside is a massive difference-maker while Grants upside is a matchup role player.

I'd be content with TL/Al splitting 5 minutes with a sprinkling of Kanter in certain matchups.

Grant is so on the edges that it's rather hilarious that people want to slam dunk on his head and make it out like he was a key player in last season's COVID induced malaise

Semi got the same shit here too. It's understandable in some ways (I practically sprung for some champagne when I heard that he signed elsewhere). Problem last year was the rotation, not the role players. Grant is awesome in the right matchups, so is Kanter, TT, even Semi. But if the Grants are getting top-8, top-9 minutes on the regular, that means that we don't have enough good players imo. It's not Grant's fault that he's Grant. And maybe he gets better.

We have officially spent more time discussing Grant Williams’s role on the ‘22 Celtics than the coaching staff.

I was more annoyed with Grant than with Semi last year because Grant regressed after a promising rookie year. So while we knew what Semi was, and all he was ever gonna be, with Grant we saw the potential for more than Semi. Bubble Grant was versatile, tough, decisive, and energetic. He got into Siakam's head. He handled Bam beautifully. He ripped rebounds out of the hands of lesser bigs. He started hitting his 3s and he was strong down low. If we still had the PF position he was a young Dan Roundfield.

But he came back and was...a young Semi. And we already had a Semi. Call it covid, call it out-of-shape. Now 2022 Grant has to improve just to get back to being 2020 Grant. As Jimbo suggests, he might get better.

I never really thought about it before, but is it possible Grant is a bubble player?

I'm not the one to say because I thought he was bad his rookie year too.

Nah. If it were shooting or attention span, maybe. But he's a slow guy who got slower. Not a hell of a lot of margin for a guy with his limited size and twitchiness. As it is, guys like he and Dray are dependent on their IQ to add value. Grant was slower. He needs every edge that he can get. As Bernie notes, it was frustrating to watch.

Jabari Parker, Carsen Edwards, Bruno Fernando and Kris Dunn are all currently on the Celtics roster.

The bubble would have to be enormous to pop all those guys, then also Grant.

Ok let’s get fired up with some Championship Game talk!!!

Pritchard said yesterday he was on his way back to Vegas for the game. He sounded fired up about it so despite Mazzulla saying he didn’t know I expect PP to be out there. We are the far superior team fillled with NBA veterans so let’s get this rout going before halftime!!! #SLfanboy

Anyone else have a glitchy ESPN feed - sound cuts out, video freezes? Is it a Comcast thing?
