Where it rains. No, seriously.
Tyler McDonough from NC State is the 3rd round pick
Player comparison: Brock Holt
The Wolfpack outfielder has drawn comparisons to super-utility specialist Brock Holt. Like the 2018 World Series Champion, McDonough can shuttle between the outfield and third base. He also has a grinder mentality which has helped Holt have a successful career. Along with great instincts, his occasional power has also reminded scouts of Adam Eaton.

Fabian worked to implement his new approach, a simplified load with a removal of his leg kick, but it took time. His mindset had shifted, but his muscle memory needed constant repetitions to catch up before he could feel assured of the process. Things began to click a few weeks after that series against the Gamecocks when the Gators got to Auburn, and Fabian went from a 37.4% K-rate on April 6 to a more palatable 29.3% rate by the end of the season.

He retooled his swing this year and his K-rate spiked. Then the K-rate dropped precipitously over the last few weeks of the season. That's promising.

Not to be a downer, but here's Keith Law's analysis of Fabian (who has him at #59 for this draft):
He also said the red sox would go college even if Mayer were available.

He’s a major-leaguer, true, but one with a minus-1.2 WAR this season. I have nothing against him personally and I hope he improves but he’s been really bad.

Hopefully Fabian can be better, and his good CF defense would make him more valuable than Dalbec if he puts up a similar line.
I think maybe an adjustment of expectations is in order here. The best red sox draft in recent memory was in 2011 where they got Barnes, Swihart, Owens, Bradley Jr, Noe Ramirez, Mookie and Travis Shaw. Most draft picks never even get to AAA. If we got a replacement level major leaguer out of a second round draft pick, we should be pretty happy.

To address Dalbec, Michael Taylor has a 31% K rate, a .671 OPS and he's been worth 1 win because he's a good defender in CF. The positional adjustment matters a lot.

Yeah, it was noted that he was drafted as a 2B even though he played mostly CF this year. Sounds like he can do a little bit of everything.

I’m with you. I think it’s a great pick

Have to say I'm amazed at how good Mayo and Callis are on mlb.com. They are able to say something about every single one of these guys with no notice when each is getting picked.

Looks like BC SS and pride of Exeter, NH Cody Morrissette went to Miami with the 52nd pick. Pretty cool to see a kid drafted that I watched in pitch, hit and run competitions when my son was taking part in them.

Again, I'll throw out Will Taylor, MLB.com's 20th ranked prospect. Looking more likely that Dabo is going to have a new QB.

My guess is Sox can't afford his bonus demands after Mayer and Fabian.

I don't like going through what it takes to have the 4th pick in every round, but it's kind of fun being here now that we're here.

We've had the no-trading-draft-picks discussion ad nauseam, but I do wonder what the Pirates could have gotten for 1/1 ... with Leiter sitting there and Pittsburgh seemingly locked in on Davis

Looks like Elmer throws a low-90s fastball and has some sort of slurvy breaking pitch. He's young for the draft, and really thin.

That is cool. We have a kid in the neighborhood who I umped and kinda assistant-coached, and who is going to UCLA in '22 as a RHP. It'll be fun to see him come up next year and remember those days when I prayed the catcher was ready to actually catch the ball when this kid was throwing 75 or so from 45 feet.

And EHS TE (also via BC) Hunter Long was an NFL 3rd rounder in April.

What?
A Vermont HS P Owen Kellington was just picked with the first pick in the 4th round to Pittsburgh.
U-32 represent! This is really surprising, and really awesome. Owen destroyed the state of Vermont this year, but I didn’t ever think he’d go that high. No chance he goes to UConn now.
I ran into my son’s little league coach this weekend, whose older son was on that state championship team this year, and he thought Kellington would go in the second round. I’m still extremely impressed with his slot, and glad he is with my NL team.

So are Will Taylor and Peyton Stovall not signing with anyone? Football players? Seems like all of the undrafted kids ranked in the top 100 are high schoolers so I presume they have a few options on the table.
Will Taylor is playing football at Clemson.

This draft has not been kind to UConn, between Mozzicato going last night, Kellington in the 4th today and they just lost their ace from last year to the Dodgers in the 5th. A positive spin is that tells you the job Penders has done elevating the UConn baseball program the last 10 years.

There also hasn't been an obvious savings-relative-to-slot pick, at least that I've noticed. So they must have an arrangement with Mayer.

Stovall withdrew his name from the draft today.

Scouting report on Wyatt Olds. This report has me excited.

http://macksmets.blogspot.com/2020/12/scouting-report-lhp-wyatt-olds.html

"Big-time 3B orientation on his horizonatal approach angle allows his high spin stuff to play way, way up. Slider might have more perceived horizontal tilt that any other pitcher in the draft. Approach to the plate mirrors guys like Adam Ottavino. Furthermore, his lower release height and extension allow a low 90s fastball to blow up on hitters at the top of the zone. Sneaky good profile here that could move extremely fast in the bullpen."

This site has him ranked #100, and the Sox got him at #196. For whatever that's worth.
