You're right, I'll leave Elmer and his name alone.

Meanwhile despite the Pirates picking Davis, we did get a C after all with Hickey. Hopefully he leaves his mark.
sounds like he's a left fielder but can really hit.

MLB Pipeline write up:
Hickey attended Providence High School in Jacksonville, playing with Reds 2019 third-round pick Tyler Callihan. His left-handed bat garnered some attention, but he went undrafted and went on to the University of Florida. He made an immediate offensive impact as a freshman in the shortened 2020 season and has kept on swinging the bat well as a Draft-eligible sophomore to put an up arrow next to his name on Draft boards. Hickey has raised his offensive profile to the point where he's now being considered to be one of the best bats in Florida. He has a solid approach at the plate, drawing a ton of walks. He's been tapping into his power and while some scouts see a bit of a max effort swing, he's cut his strikeout rate down considerably this year. Hickey lost 20-25 pounds when he first got to Florida and has kept the weight off, making him more athletic in the box. The bat is going to have to play because few scouts believe he'll be able to catch long-term. He has more than enough arm for the position, but lacks the agility or the hands to deal with high-octane pitching. The best possible defensive outcome might be for him to move to left field and let the bat carry him to the big leagues in a Kyle Schwarber type of trajectory.

Played and started in 51 games, including 48 at first base ... hit .313 (65-for-208) with 38 runs, 10 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs and 61 RBI, leading the team in homers and RBI ... his 61 RBI were the most in the SEC in the regular season and his 16 homers were fourth ... also finished top 10 in the league in total bases (125) and slugging (.613)

Yep I saw him up close this year. Swing and miss stuff but has control problems at times.
He finished with double digit strikeouts in 11 of his 12 starts, if I recall correctly.
Funny, his coach had this to say in April: “Going off past drafts… If he keeps doing what he’s doing, if he doesn’t go in the top 10 rounds, I’d be very surprised. I just can’t see him not getting picked by somebody,” Derba said.

Cleveland can't develop a bat, so they've just given up on the concept… 10 of their first 11 picks are college pitchers, including three out of Florida (not the entire state, just the University). This seems like a disaster.

Maybe there are some future trades to be made as Boston and Cleveland focus on their respective comparative advantages.

Waiting til the 7th round to select a guy with the INCREDIBLY AWESOME name "Wyatt Olds" is the kind of canny discipline we've come to expect from Chaim and friends.

Was just looking back at last season’s schedule. The Sox played 4 extra inning games and lost all of them, including one crucial game against the O’s who finished one game behind the Sox (in Tankathon terms).

As a reminder, only 2 games separated #4 from #11. And it landed us the top prospect in the draft. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than, uhh, bad?

Couldn’t have picked a better year for Cora to have been suspended.

I can't remember if I've seen any reporting definitively on the status of his signing, but I did stumble across this local news piece and interview on YouTube and can't tell what kind of confirmation this would be:

At 1:03, Marcelo's father says their advisor called after the first pick and said they had an agreement with Boston, Marcelo was happy with it, and that the next few picks were very stressful. This would seem to indicate that the Sox have plans to sign both Mayer and Fabian, even if it means going over slot to do so. Apologies if that is a "duh"-level of analysis . I'm not enough of a draftnik to say whether this is obvious to anyone else, or if the remaining picks on day 2 further cement that.

This would make sense in the context of our farm. Our 15th ranked farm is only ranked this highly because we have the highest amount of 40FV players at 18 players.

Relative to the teams with better ranked farm systems, we have only 3 players with FV of 50 or more. That's tied with 14th ranked KC, and worse than all the other 13 teams.

So, the system at present has a lot of decent prospects, many of whom will not pan out. What we're really lacking is some high-end talent. Drafting both Mayer and Fabian and agreeing to pay slot or above slot makes sense in filling out the system with high-end talent. We have enough 40FV players relative to other systems. The top 7 ranked farm systems have 6 or more players with FV of 50 or more, basically double the high-end talent that we have. That's what we don't have enough and hopefully we're forgoing some lower ranked players and willing to pay slot or above for Mayer and Fabian.

Mayer is coming in with an FV of 50 and Fabian with FV of 40+.
