It's here again!!!! It should be a wide open tournament this year. Any one of 10 guys could win it. Based on some players' comments that are already at Augusta, the course is drier and playing more firm than it did in November.

Not a snarky post here: But we've seen a growing trend away from terms like "owner" (of sports teams) or "master" bathroom/bedroom, because those terms are more and more becoming offensive to people as they harken back to slavery.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/jun/24/adam-silver-nba-done-using-owner/

https://www.housebeautiful.com/lifestyle/fun-at-home/a1087/master-bedroom-politically-incorrect/

So the serious question is: will there be pushback against the term "The Masters"? And will Augusta National even come close to listening to such pushback, should it come?

Here's an article from a year ago on this.

Good article. Before I read it, I didn't really see why it was an issue, because I know the background of the name
But after reading the article, like the author points out, my view is definitely skewed and not intentionally

I would think there will be some pushback on the name growing, especially after the MLB move this past week to move it away from Atlanta
Georgia will have more of a spotlight on it and this will likely become more of a conversation this week
I wouldn't be surprised to see it gain some traction

I don't hate Sergio's odds at 49/1. He's been on form lately, and I feel like he could be in the mix come Sunday.

Master does have other relevant meanings and connotations entirely unrelated to slavery. I mean, how about "Chess Master?" While I agree the tournament and the venue both have a checkered racial history (to be kind) and very deservedly so, isn't changing the name a bridge a bit too far?

I don't think you want to go there. We can't even call it a brown bag session at work anymore (literally, lunch bags are brown). Removing 'Master' seems way closer of a bridge than brown bag lunch.

Master implies enslaving someone, even if it's connotation is a mastery of a skill. I see no harm in calling it The Invitational or whatever.

It's just a name, who really cares. Nothing else changes.

I want a Bryson win so I can enjoy the salty postings that will follow but I would be very happy with Koepka or Morikawa.

Rory would be a fun one too.

Won't be Brooks, he's injured and not playing.

I'd love to see Rory complete the slam but it seems unlikely. He was pretty lost at The Players and again at the match play 2 weeks ago. You never know though, maybe coming in with lower expectations is what he needs.

Huh, looks like you're right. I could've sworn he announced he wasn't playing several weeks ago. Good to have him in the field.
You are correct. He did announce it was very unlikely. And then he switched it up this week.

Current club chairman Fred Ridley has been spearheading efforts by the club to help out those less well off in the City of Augusta. Here are articles about those efforts, including a $10 million donation.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/Masters2020-augusta-national-contributes-10-million-to-community

https://golf.com/news/features/inside-augusta-national-efforts-revive-augusta-neighborhoods/

This may be the equivalent to change found in the couch cushions in Butler Cabin for the membership, but it shows a willingness to put in an effort to help out over the long haul, and leverage connections to bring in corporate partners in assist with such efforts.

I'm pretty sure the club does not want to change the tournament name. I'd think it would be better the club be an enthusiastic partner, rather than awkward semi punching bag with a history of being stubborn and independent when similar matters come across their porchstep, in the efforts to help those less well off in the city of Augusta. But YMMV on that.

Man....a twosome behind a threesome. And i don't really think you can ask to play through with those fellas.
And a reaaaaaaalllly old threesome at that. They should have spaced out the tee time a little more so that Thompson and Swofford aren’t being held up all day.

Augusta member Jeff Knox is typically a marker if there's an odd number that make the cut. Not sure if he would fill out a threesome for Thursday and Friday. He's a pretty cool story if you've never heard of him. Often times he will beat the guy he is playing with.

Yeah guys I thought you were joking at first but that tee time is the ceremonial tee shot. Or did you really think Jack's fat ass is gonna try to walk 18 around Augusta?

I was talking about Vijay and Laird going off as a twosome in terms of having a marker. Might be two conversations going on here.

Fair - I doubt they do that on Thursday/Friday, they only do it on the weekends so someone doesn’t have to play alone.

The coverage on ESPN of the practice round is awesome. SVP is the best and just seeing the players being casual and relaxed while walking the course is really cool.

I’m picking Jordan. His record here when in form is just too good. He’s got his mojo back and it’s a place he can spray it off the tee a little bit and not be crippled.
