Texas announced a new NIL program today called The Pancake Factory that will pay every offensive lineman $50,000 a year to promote charities with Horns With Hearts.

I am not a fan of Brian Kelly, at all. But he did do one good thing to connect better with players and recruits, particularly Louisiana recruits, after the horrific "family" incident.

Hired Frank Wilson to be the AHC.
https://lsusports.net/news/2021/12/07/kelly-names-frank-wilson-associate-head-coach/

Had similar role under Miles @ LSU. Born in the Big Easy. Played at Nicholls St. Coached at Nicholls and was just head coach at McNeese.

Probably will be recruiting coordinator as well, just as before.

LSU QB Max Johnson (son of Brad) entering the transfer portal.
Criminal that Nussmeier has to burn a redshirt year so LSU doesn’t have to play a WR at QB. Great opportunity for the NCAA to do right thing and step in to grant an exemption. Good luck with that though.

Why would the NCAA want to favor LSU over other schools? Especially when this is a problem that is 100% of their own making?

They aren’t favoring LSU…..they just wouldn’t be penalizing the kid or making a mockery out of integrity of the game. Nobody cares if LSU wins or losses as the school gets paid regardless.

The bowl game opt-outs and transfers have jumped the shark. LSU didn’t force Max to enter transfer protocol this week. It would be a one-off until they change their current playoff/bowl system.

I’ve been in favor of an 8-team playoff system for over 20 years but now I’m shifting gears and calling for an end to all the meaningless bowl games while replacing them with a 16-team (or even 24) playoff system.

That’s all fine, but you still haven’t answered why LSU should benefit by getting an extra year of eligibility for their QB of the future when the problem is that they screwed up their coaching situation so badly that the other two QBs transferred?

Also - given your (completely justified, IMO) scorn for a meaningless bowl game, why doesn’t LSU fix the problem by playing their emergency QB for the game?

I was happy to see that the NCAA has outlawed the Kenny Pickett fake slide play (the ball will now be considered dead as soon as a player starts or fakes a feet-first slide).

Playing a WR at QB would be the option which is why I included “integrity of the game” as a reason for the waiver. It seems like you have something out for LSU in claiming they botched their coaching job resulting in QB’s transferring when this occurs at most schools when there is a coaching change this time of year. I mean we’ve got schools with coaches in place whose healthy QB’s are walking away from the team prior to bowl games. What they really need to do is end these silly post-season money grabs that nobody cares about.

I have no feeling one way or another about LSU, and the bolded strikes me as preposterous, since I am not the one who is saying that LSU should be treated differently. In fact, I'm doing precisely the opposite, which is saying that it sucks for a player to have to burn a year of eligibility based on circumstances beyond their control, but I don't understand the argument for special treatment when these sorts of situations pop up everywhere, all the time.

Some defender was no doubt going to "outlaw" it by taking one for the club and clobbering the qb the next time it happened. Glad it didn't come to that.

Next they’ll ban the lacrosse/hockey play. No Fun League indeed.
That one I think is on the defense. I assume if the qb walked away and lined up or went in motion there would be no problem w/that? Why should gesturing to the sideline matter?

I didn’t me to come across accusatory as I have no skin in the game either. I also don’t feel the NCAA would be favoring LSU since I’d propose they do this regardless of the school. The player here is much more negatively affected than the school, which to me isn’t relevant. These situations don’t occur “all the time” as I don’t recall there ever being a similar situation as these massive bowl optouts are relatively new.

I don't even understand the argument. Why should he get to play five games and not use a year of eligibility? This is 2021; if he doesn't want to play in the Texas Bowl, he doesn't have to play.

The obvious solution is... you can't hire a new coach until after you've played all your games. If you want to hire a new coach and your QBs all transfer/sit out then you decline the bowl bid and leave the money on the table.

Appreciate your opening words (even if I didn’t quote them) and I apologize if my posts seemed confrontational.

That said, I’m still a bit confused, because I thought what you were saying before is that the unfettered ability of players to access the transfer portal or to opt out of bowl games made these situations increasingly common these days.

I do understand that the coaching situation at LSU on top of the other factors is somewhat unique. And I completely agree that the bowl games have lost their meaning. I just don’t think that’s a reason to grant a redshirt exemption. (Though I wouldn’t be upset if they did.)

Looks like the Longhorns have picked up #1 2021 QB Quinn Ewers from the portal. Highest rated QB since Vince Young. There is hope.
Got him, then lost him, and got him again. 2nd highest recruit ever - first was VY. May this turn out like that.
Got a pretty good OT too:

We'll have to check back with you guys in 4 hours to see if you need to seek medical attention.

This has got to be some sort of money laundering scheme, right? Deion can't directly pay him so that's where Barstool comes in.

Think we see a ton of this now. Freshmen and sophomores who have breakout years can all now go “pay me or I’m out.”
Not just current FR and SO. It potentially has some effects at the HS level. Note the two flips that Jackson State HC "Neon" Deion "Prime Time" Sanders was able to swing: the consensus #1 player in the country - CB Travis Hunter, and the #4 WR - Kevin Coleman. Both were verbal commits to Florida State. Hunter flipped on NLI signing day back in December. Coleman flipped during his reveal at the All American Bowl in San Antonio this past weekend.

I'm sure that Sanders, marketing guru that he is, likely whispered into their ears just how much more profitable their branding efforts will be at JU vs. FSU.
