Tournament of Champions tees off tonight in Hawaii. Due to the COVID shut down, in addition to the tournament winners, they invited all players who qualified for the 2020 Tour Championship without a win. So it's a slightly larger field than normal.

Anything is better than the terrible Adidas fits he had. They do not fit his body type.
I hadn't noticed it but googling him it looks like everything he wears is a size too small. I searched some older pictures and he seems a bit slimmer. I wonder if he simply put on some weight and refused to size up. I'm surprised Adidas didn't send him some XL with a L tag sewn in or something. I'm sure they paid decent money only for him to look like he squeezed into a sausage casing.

Niemann trying to hold off JT and English down the stretch. English is probably in the best position given he has the most holes left and this is a birdie fest.

18 at Kapalua a fun hole for TV. Probably to play too, downhill downwind. The 2nd shot is always fun to watch, the big sweeping draws to that left pin. Not a lot of strategy to the hole but fun visually.

Niemann misses a birdie putt on 18. He’s in at -25. English is also at -25 but he has 3 holes left, and the aforementioned 18th is a birdie hole.

Grayson needs those alternate events since he never qualifies for majors. His lone tour win was the same week as the British Open.

Somehow despite being the 5th longest on tour last year he was near the bottom of GIR. He actually kind of sucks in every statistical category except hit ball far.

Apparently he deleted his twitter account today.

This is nothing new with Grayson. He's long been super MAGA and an asshole on twitter and a frequent target of golf Twitters humor/snark/ire.

He also got into hot water for hitting on a high school girl on Twitter with "idk but I hate the fact that you are in high school. You are pretty." Folks do not let him forget it, that's for sure.

He's an asshole.

I watched part 1 of the Tiger documentary on HBO Max last night. Part 1 covers his life through Earl's death and the British Open he won right after.

It was OK, not great. I assume everyone who posts here regularly knows the Tiger Woods story. So for people familiar with him, there was nothing new in the documentary. I think part 2 comes out this Sunday and it's going to be the sexcapades, fall and comeback. I'm not really expecting too much new ground to be covered here either, but we'll see.

From reviews I've seen it just glosses over the comeback and gets really, really seedy about his personal life.

I will watch it. Of course I will. But I'll be disappointed if his comeback, both professionally and personally isn't covered more. I mean we're talking about the most popular athlete of my generation with one of the great redemption stories ever told. I think that's why the Father/Son tournament was so enjoyable. Tiger has moved on from the robot terminator to a lovable elder character.

Yeah, the ending of part 1 certainly indicates they're going to go heavy into the affairs.

They don't seem to have anyone in Woods' camp on camera, which is too be expected. I don't think he'd be cooperative for something like this. So, yeah, probably not getting an inside look at the comeback. The people on camera in part 1 were mostly peripheral characters. They had a couple of Nike reps, a few journalists, a few people who claimed to be "family friends" with the Woods' when Tiger was growing up. The two people closest to Woods are Steve Williams (obvious ax to grind) and a high school ex-girlfriend. I think the girlfriend had a unique perspective on Tiger, but she aslo pretty clearly still resents the way things ended with him and was holding onto receipts until someone came knocking on her door.

They really should not charge for December or January. If I'm giving them money, lug the damned equipment over to Hawaii.

Niemann has a share of the lead at the Sony. He looks posed for a huge breakout season.

He's younger than Morikawa, which is pretty crazy. Feels like he's a 10 year veteran.

I just realized they're playing Torrey Pines twice this year (end of Jan and for US Open). I thought he might out for the US Open.

My fantasy team is featured prominently. Good times.

I enjoyed Martin Kaymer....”You’re too....nice”

Cantlay bombs one in on 18 to shoot 61 and post -22. Kim is at -21 but has 4 holes left. Ridiculous weekend for Cantlay.

Spieth in the featured group on a tough, long, narrow course. Buckle up.

Edit: And first tee shot has the announcers saying "That may be so far right it's actually good!"

Remember when Stenson fell off the planet and almost out of golf before coming back with a vengeance?

Spieth won't do that lol
Becoming the world's best 3-wood tee shot guy was a neat trick.

Do former elite putters even regain their mojo without some sort of major change? How soon until we see Spieth with a long putter?

His putting isn't the problem. It's fallen off a bit but is still ok.

He used to be an excellent approach player and decent off the tee. He's now abysmal off the tee and not good on approach. That's his problem. He's always been excellent around the green and still is.

Ultimately he needs to stop losing strokes off the tee. He's been negative strokes gained off the tee for the last 3 years. You can't compete like that. He still makes plenty of birdies, he just makes way too many bogeys/doubles from his bad tee shots. I think he can turn it around. He's 4 years younger than Finau and the same age as Xander, for reference. However - I think it's gonna take some drastic changes that I'm not sure he'll be willing or able to make.

His problem isn't putting or short game, it's his full shots. As the broadcast just said, every full shot is "hit and hope." He has no idea where anything is going. He's hit 3 drives today and gone way right, way left, medium right.

Short game and putting is mostly OK. He grinds like a mother out there. But you're just not going to get anywhere having to make 10-15 footers for par on every hole.

Can't say I agree with those takes on his putting. Check out the difference in seemingly every statistical putting category in 2015-16 vs. the past couple years. He fell off a cliff. Especially in make percentage per distance. I'm not saying he's killing himself with his putter but he went from the top of the tour to the middle of the pack.
