A healthy LeBron and Davis. They combined for 84 today. The two of them would easily carry the Lakers to the playoffs if they were good to go for 82…..but we know that isn’t likely.
Yup. With all 3 guys healthy and playing well they should be rolling through everyone, but other than a nice win over the Bucks with Middleton back, they've been hammering the dreck of the league. You can only play the teams in front of you, but despite this recent stretch they are still a couple games under .500 and in 12th place. They've got some real teams coming up (Cavs, Raptors, Celtics, Nuggets, Suns, Kings in their next 9 games), we'll know by Christmas if they are for real.

Apparently this is a fake video. Not sure why SI or Steph would do this...
Yeah, was about to come here to note this. I’m such a sap! I guess it’s testament to the crazy stuff he does in practice (77 straight threes, e.g.) that so many people bought it.

The Pacers are taking it to the Dubs late in the fourth. Andrew Nembhard, have yourself a night
This kid has outperformed my expectations by a ton as a rookie. His game is (apparently) made for this league. I did not expect to see this after 4 relatively uninspiring collegiate seasons.

His shot is not good aesthetically but it seems to work. Dude has size and a well rounded game.

The most impressive thing about Nembhard as well as the Pacers overall was their defense tonight. Their length and athleticism clamped down on Steph. Nesmith appears to be getting run for his D and tonight he seemed good too. Overall, the Pacers are actually pretty bad by most defensive metrics but they have the pieces to make life tough for opposing teams.

I’ve never trusted most defensive metrics as many don’t seem to account for the flow of the game. Forget about individual metrics as those are basically useless to me in todays game where teams are defending as a unit and not as an individual. You’re basically as good as your teammates are provided you matchup appropriately.

As far as the Pacers as a team I think some of their numbers are skewed by the pace with which they play……sometimes by their liking and other times as a willing dance partner to teams like the Spurs, Kings and Jazz most recently. When a game is going up and down in transition with numbers most of the time there isn’t a team that is going to grade out well. Then you have a team like the Nets who have gone through the motions defensively missing assignments every other possession yet grade out average bc they play at a slow pace mostly in halfcourt sets. Pace is a cheat code to better defensive numbers……don’t let it fool you. Tonight was a good example of a half court game that showed the Pacers ability without teams going downhill on them in transition all night.

BTW: why does Denver seem to have Phoenix's number?
Similarly, why does Chicago seem to have the C's number? The Bulls pretty much suck against everybody else.
I imagine you mean DAL having PHO number?

DAL is actually a very terrible 4-15 over the past 6 years in the regular season against PHO. I think their disappearance in game 6 and 7 in last year's playoffs is tainting our views.

CHI is 7-11 against the BOS in that same timeframe

I was talking about this season. The Bulls (9-15) have looked like world-beaters against the C's (20-5) and like shit against most everybody else.

Yep, meant Dallas. And the fact that they just won by ~20 points in a wire to wire victory suggests that the 'tainting' may be a real thing . That 6 years is too long a window.

Talking about defense and the Pacers last night, we need to discuss Jordan Poole. He's electric on offense but man does he get abused defensively. Plays small, and gets pushed around. If you want a basket, hunt that dude.

Yeah he was exposed defensively in the playoffs and now that he’s gotten paid doesn’t appear too interested in perfecting his craft at that end of the floor.

Watching the Miami Heat game. They don't seem to be in a rush to sandblast FTX off their floor. Still advertising on the sidelines for "Chain.com". They may want to pull their chain advertisements

I’d imagine their attorneys are advising them to continue honoring the contract until there is resolution. Awful situation for sure though.

Does that explain why they lose two in a row, including a 20 point loss to Detroit at home? Or do they just hate the celtics?
Considering the Heat went and shot their best games against Boston last week, I'm just going with "Kyle Lowry is a dick."

Mitchell destroyed the Lakers last night, 17-27 from the field for 43 points. He's having an incredible season so far, 29-4-5 and coming extremely close to 50-40-90; he is at 49.6% from the field, 42% from three and 89% from the line.

The Celtics/Heat meeting in the 1st round in a 1/8 or 2/7 matchup is a real [annoying] possibility.
If they are a 7 or 8 there is a real Jimmy quits on this group possibility

he went toxic on them last year for a bit when they struggled

they have implosion written all over them

I actually don't care about a lot of the travels where it is purely out of laziness and confers no advantage, like when bigs catch a pass at the top of the key and get sloppy with their feet looking to pass.

But some of the gathers these days are like 5 steps.

Feels like that Tweet is fighting yesterday's war...

New Point Of Emphasis

Over the ensuing 36 hours, the Knicks were hit with six violations in a blowout loss to the Mavericks before committing another eight -- the most called on any team in a single game since 2010, according to Elias Sports Bureau research -- during Sunday's 91-82 victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
October saw 1.7 travels called per game, according to analysis by ESPN's Kevin Pelton. That number doubled in November. (During the 2021-22 season, there were 1.26 travels called per game, the lowest frequency dating back to 1996-97, the first year that play-by-play data is available).

What has been even more dramatic is the increase in carrying and palming calls. In October, not a single carry was called. In November, there were 44 -- 43 were called across the entire 2021-22 season. Six palming violations in October were followed by 57 being called in November -- 67 such calls were made across all of last season.

He’s awful. I know a lot of people love him for his highlight reel, but I have a hard time liking him because his entire game or predicated on blatant carrying. People say everyone travels, blah blah. But he’s taking it to an extreme level which I personally feel should not be celebrated. His illegal dribbling is on the same level as Giannis flying elbows for me.

Ive felt that way about Morant for a while. It's really egregious but they wont stop it.

By freezing the frame there is no way of telling if the rotation of the ball has come to a stop for any of these plays to be a carry.
Ball coming to a stop is only one of the possible criteria for a carry in the NBA rule book. If your hand goes underneath the ball, you're carrying. Also, the video author does pause but then lets the play continue after. They're clear carries, which shouldn't be surprising given the player.

  1. A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again.

That's the NBA rule. I don't think the rotation of the ball has to stop if a player carries it forward with his hand under it. The bringing it to a pause and then starting again is also a carry.

Morant does both, but the one that truly creates the advantage is when he gets his hand under the ball and brings it forward and is past the defender in a blink as a result.

Giannis does it all the time too.

Edit: The consecutive clips starting at the 10 second mark of the video are exactly how Morant takes advantage of the carry to get around a defender. The one at the 1:15 mark is just outrageous, followed by the "I love my son, and I ain't never carried him that much" line.

Curry, Dray stayed home to prepare for Boston Saturday night.

The Celtics didn't just massacre the Suns last night, they sent a message to the Warriors. They're coming and Tatum is now healthy.

Clarkson looking like he was about to put up his dukes and throw down was the non Celtics highlight of the night for me
It kind of looks like Kuminga starts laughing at that point which seems to have made Clarkson more pissed. Don't know him but not surprised he's a fake tough guy

oh this is hop scotch now

Carry-on luggage...TSA...like a purse...like a newborn

does JP = Jordan Poole?
Yep. Not that Poole doesn’t egregiously carry, but he’s had games this season where he been whistled for it 2-3 times, while the LaMelos of the world can do it for weeks on end without ever getting called out (except by bloggers).
