Just so it gets some visibility here, the Magic beat Denver tonight in Orlando and everyone important played for the Nuggets.

My takeaways are twofold here. First, February road games are always kind of tough. More to the point, the Magic arent a pushover team. They are going to be an increasing irritant to the rest of the EC for the next few years. They could become scary real quick too if Paolo realizes his full potential.
Murray didn’t play for the Nuggets but the Magic are still 18-13 since their 5-20 start when half of their rotation was out. They are more than not a pushover they are a good team and a really good team at home.

As I began writing this I’m watching Anthony Davis bite on a Giannia up-fake from literally 5 feet behind the arc, land out of position to allow Giannis to use his dribble to draw the foul…..then scoff at the ref like it was his fault. File this under delusional NBA players.

Dang. In a world of bad calls and fair retorts that it's very difficult to ref this one takes the cake in the "how could that have been called?" category.

Does the NBA plan to review their review policies? NFL finally seems to be getting it right with the expedited review. The NBA challenge system is all sort of messed up, but at least add expedited review for the last 2 minutes of a game so that for egregiously bad calls like this one there can be a quick/simple correction rather than one based on whether or not a team has already used a challenge.

Am I missing something? What does everyone think is the terrible call here? Gordon clearly bumped Fox's lower body as he was going up for the shot. That's called 9 times out of 10 for most of the game, and while it's a little surprising to see it in the final second, it doesn't change the fact that it's a foul.

Not sure what you’re seeing that no one else is. He didn’t touch him at all.

It looks like Gordon bumped him but in super duper slow mo you can see a sliver of space between the two bodies. I'm not sure how any human referee is supposed to see that - particularly with most attention being focused on the shot - but Silas was correct and there was no contact.

The Mavs look incredible tonight. Kyrie is doing his 'perfect teammate' routine like he did for the first few months with Boston and Brooklyn.

Last Two Minute report agrees, take that for what it’s worth:
Gordon (HOU) initiates lower body contact to Fox (SAC) while he is in his shooting motion and before the expiration of time.

Blazers with an epic collapse at home tonight to the OKC Thunder. They took a 112-103 lead into a TO with 10:01 to go…..at the 1:49 mark the Thunder held a 136-121 lead as the benches entered the game soon thereafter. Outscored 33-8 in the 4Q at home. Ouch!

OKC is kind of a problem. Jalen Williams feels like he is figuring things out. They have SGA, Giddey and a rotation of players that do useful NBA things. This isn't to suggest that they are a contender but they could be sneaky tough against a lot of other teams in the West if they can make it in to the dance.

I was at this game. Awful.

Thankfully I was in a suite with free alcohol.

It’s so exciting watching these guys heave up 3s then stand there posing with their arm up for a poster for a few seconds instead of immediately running in for a possible rebound like Bird would have. No fundamentals at all.

This is step 1. Step 2 is the Mavs making a nice run in the playoffs, but falling short for an understandable reason - maybe Kyrie or Luka get hurt, or maybe they just run into a Phoenix buzzsaw. Good enough for Mavs fans (and ownership) to feel comfortable offering him a max deal.

Last Two Minute report agrees, take that for what it’s worth:
I really don't like the 2 minute report (I think it cheapens the win for teams that benefit, and just further angers the team that got screwed), but they generally don't bother lying there.

I bet they like their core enough now that they get in the mix for the next star who comes free on the trade market.

OKC has thousands of first-round picks. Come summer, it'll be time for them to try to turn some of those picks into elite players, no?

I would think so?

They've been (smartly) waiting until they had a core they liked, but I think they're close to that now. Honestly would have made a lot of sense to add Poeltl for one of their infinite 1sts, and then go star-hunting with 4-5 picks, and then fill out some roleplayers. While still having a good deal left over.

Is there a star player in the league who wants to play in OKC?

Cleveland isn't a destination, but Mitchell seems happy. You'd be looking for a guy with significant team control left.
Paul George also signed an extension after being traded there, and seemed content in OKC until Kawhi convinced him to join up in LA.

Lol, I totally forgot PG. I don't think OKC will be overly concerned about flight risk if the right guy comes available.

I know, and you didn't even mention Jaylin Williams! (This would have been funnier if they spelled their first name the same).

The video below is a slightly different angle and if you pause it a 7:04 (it should start at 7:02), it does look like Gordon clipped Fox on the back. And even if Gordon didn't, he was so close most refs would call it I believe.

The Jazz could have sent Mitchell from Utah to Ethiopia and he’d have been happy to get away from Gobert.

I just saw Duren had a nice line for the Pistons last night: 13 for 20 for 30 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocks.

He was the guy I was dreaming of the Celtics somehow getting last year, though of course it would've been next to impossible, since he was only 19 and already showed a lot of promise.

Big fan of Duren’s future. One huge variance nowadays, especially with bigs, is a players motor. This kid absolutely loves to work! He boxes out, he goes after rebounds hard on both ends, he tries to defend even though he doesn’t yet have much of an idea of what he’s doing…..he just grinds and he has the work ethic to reach his ceiling which is pretty high for his stylistic game due to his physicals.

Maybe we can get him now that Wiseman is the center of the future for Detroit. That is, if they don’t just void the whole trade.

If the trade holds up, and the Pistons want to develop Wiseman, it’s more likely that Beef Stew is the odd man out in Detroit if he can’t hit the threeball. Duren is the big that will flourish with their young core of Cunningham and Ivey.

They aren't winning anything, but they are stacked with very solid starters. It wouldn't be the most shocking thing if they manage to stay out of the play in games (currently 4 games ahead of the 7th place Knicks).

They were a really fun, solid, balanced team before they went for the big stars and now they are again (although Cam Thomas with the homophobic slur sort of rained on the fun/likeable bit). Funny thing is they are sort of back where they were before: a competitive mid-level team that'll could be very attractive to a star looking for a base on which to win.

What goes around comes around.

At the half Harden has 7 FG, Embiid has 5, nobody else on PHI has more than 1.
James Harden just gets away with a blocking call he's received a million times in his career. Officials love him more than life itself.

Nets collapse down the stretch and lose by 3, just 2 points in the final 6 minutes plus.

Jacque Vaughn abandons Cam Thomas, Joe Harris, Royce O'Neale in Q4. Nets score 16pts lose 100-97

Less than a second left, Dinwiddie catch and gathers to hit what appears a game-tying 3. BUT buzzer sounded. No good.
That play has to be going toward the basket, catch and shoot.

So much bad situational & end of game coaching.

Bridges blew a layup that would have given the Nets the lead with seconds left. Big difference between being a first and fourth option.

Dinwiddie was so awful down the stretch. Why are you burying Thomas on the bench for Dinwiddie??
They need a bucket, 5 seconds left and they have Claxton on the floor???

Those last 5 minutes they could have gone off/def situational numerous times and Vaughn went with Claxton/DFS

Give the fans a break, they've been through hell and back in Brooklyn. Let them see Cam Thomas, who scored 14pts in 18 mins

Also Joe Harris scored 18pts (6 for 9 from 3) in 16mins

I assume the master plan is to finish 11th, one game out the play-in, and blame the refs for stealing a championship from the Lakers with the Tatum non-call.
When they fail to make the play-in game, even the Tatum non-call won't be able to cover that stench.

In 2018 Prime LeBron barely carried the Cavs to the FINALS, as the 4th seed in the EC. The "regular season means nothing" seed really took root with that group. Tristan Thompson brought that crappy mantra to Boston one year.

The Lakers and Warriors have been running with that regular season means nothing concept for a little too long this year.
