I don't think Bosa is alone. It's a league wide thing. The last couple seasons, they've de-emphasized holding.

Personally, I find it frustrating but they want offense.

Just removed Starting quarterback and Starting running back.

Jimmy G is eons better than Lance and Wilson is MItchell, Mitchell is Wilson.

I really wonder what Shanahan was doing. That drive from inside their own 5 that ultimately ended in downs was like Andy Reid in the Pats-Eagles Super Bowl. I was like they need to go faster. Even if they would have scored, it took way too much time.

That was a good game and an impressive win over the Rams (they may not be in full force but neither were the Niners).

That being said, all this trash talk, and SoFi South talk, and the dominance by the 9ers does not work when they lost the game they HAD to win last year (blowing a lead in the process).

Yes, with McCaffrey, SF doesn't need 3 backs. They barely need 2 if Christian is healthy. Which is good because one thing we know for sure, Mitchell will NOT stay healthy after he gets one carry.

It was actually one and a quarter games!

Lance's injury, presuming no setbacks, is really more like 10-12 weeks than automatically season ending.

Seemed like they basically were going to let him take the year to heal but wonder if the plans are changing now.

Probably depends what they think of Purdy (and Lance too).

What we know now:

QB1: Trey Lance
QB2: Jimmy G
QB3: Brock Purdy (How does Nate Sudfeld keep convincing teams to give him money?)
So... from my opening post. We're down to Mr. Irrelevant, QB3 turned QB1 Brock Purdy.

Truthfully I think he looked lively and made a lot of smart plays under constantly blitzing in this game. Was able to find the hot read easily, and let those players make plays. He didn't look overly flustered for a rookie thrown into the fire. I'm sure the league will adjust quickly, but there was some room to be optimistic now that Lance and Jimmy seem to be done for the year.

Not much to say when your top 2 qbs go down with fractured feet/ankles. Both seem to be freak things, just bad luck.

The D is still top 3 in the league, and there's playmakers though, so let's see what Brock can do.

I really think it is the best defense in the league. I mean it can be beat by speed, especially in the secondary, but what team doesn't get beat by that. That front 7 is the best I have seen all year.
I feel bad for Jimmy G, but I never really bought into a future for him in San Francisco as the money just would not work.
The game was a lot of fun today (minus the Jimmy G injury). That throw Purdy made to Kittle over the middle on third down did not look like a pass from a 7th round pick. He made some plays. I mean he looked way better than the other 7th round QB that got in the game (Skylar Thompson).
LFG.

Purdy made an interesting point in the presser. The Dolphins run Shanahan's offense, so when he was running scout team this week, he got better prep than normal to come into the game.

Thought that was an interesting aspect. Kid looks like his 13, but was emphatic and said all the right things in the presser. Let's go.

A guy at my work that follows CFB fairly closely told me that Purdy was 94th percentile scheme adjusted pass efficiency as a true freshman, but then regressed. His exact quote included "he was always lights out for like a month or so every season". I am hoping this is that month!

What did this injury cost him? 20M? 50m? 100m?

You'd have to assume he's not getting a long term deal this off season

And if, god forbid, Purdy gets hurt, the next guy up is... Jacob Eason? Yeesh.
At some point you'd be best-served to direct snap it to Deebo or McCaffrey and have them pass it once a possession just to keep the defense honest. I'm only slightly kidding.

I think this costs him a multi year contract. Outside of a SB run, I don’t think his market would have been very strong anyways. He likely signs for one year instead of two now. Maybe with the NYG as a bridge.

So now going Brady for one year makes sense for them, right? It's not like Shanahan needs a mobile QB for his system to work, he made Matt Ryan into an MVP. The team is loaded, Tom can physically still play, one season of him while Lance sits and learns from watching is the optimal path for them, no? Have to imagine Jimmy is done there.

That's the question. You've got to figure the Texans, Rams, Saints, Colts have to have various levels of interest that are ahead of the Niners. The Rams might claim him just because. The cost should be around $1.5 M based on his contract.

I wouldn't think any of those teams would have any interest. Their seasons are effectively over, why would any of them spend any money on an unnecessary QB?

Well, the Saints could beat TB tonight and be a game back in that division. Colts seem to want to collect failed QB solutions, so if Irsay gets the urge, he'll pull the trigger. Texans would be a bridge if they want to bring their #1 pick along slowly since that entire team is a disaster. Rams would do it just to mess with the Niners.

Edit: Are any of them likely? Probably not, but we'll see.

Niners are better with Purdy than Baker. Purdy will at least run the offense. You bring in Baker and it's a whole thing.

It doesn't help that he's awful. I have watched a lot of him over the last 3 years because my wife's family is from Cleveland. In the last two years, he cannot complete passes. He's just not good and he's too short, too. Batted passes all over the place. He's not an answer for any team looking to win the Super Bowl. He might be good for Houston because they are so bad, awful is an improvement. That's about it.

No way Baker is better than Dalton or Jameis, too.

Purdy seems to be winning over the locker room too. BA is a leader and when he says things like this:

View: https://twitter.com/Coach_Yac/status/1599980541448966147

I don't think those guys want to deal with someone like Baker. Let the D lead and let Purdy hit a bunch of short to mid throws and have Deebo and BA and CMC make plays. Everyone would rather still have Jimmy, but if your options are Baker or Purdy? I think the guy that's been preparing and the locker room sees that, let him roll and see what happens.

This team has a level 1 defense and tons of weapons on the offense.

Can they go far in the playoffs with Brock Purdy? Maybe, but I do not think Baker Mayfield is the answer. I don't think the Niners FO thinks so either. Purdy showed a lot when thrown to the fire vs the Dolphins, and from now it's either he is better once he has a week of practice (and learning) as QB1, or the league catches up to him, but either way I like their chances. After all, last year the defense took them to the NFCCG.

The key game is their second game vs the Seahawks on week 15. It may decide the division. The Niners have a 4-0 division record and won the first matchup. A win vs Seattle gives them the tiebreaker.

I don't see anyone advocating Baker starts. At least, I wasn't. I think they ride Purdy and have Baker as the backup. Baker is a better backup than Josh Johnson, the current backup who was just signed off of a practice squad.

How embarrassing for Baker to be thought of as a backup to. . . .Brock Purdy, last pick in the NFL draft and he of 0 total NFL starts in his career.

I think the problem with that is you're basically putting even more pressure on the 7th rounder. He's going to be constantly looking over his shoulder, worried if that #1 pick waiting in the wings is going to take his job the minute he makes a mistake. With Johnson, the team is committing to Purdy, and he can go out there with a bit more confidence knowing he probably has a longer leash. San Fran is in a position right now with the skill position players and defense to compete with even slightly below average QB play, and confidence was an issue noted on Purdy coming out of college.

There's also a pre-existing relationship between Johnson and Shanahan, and the team and the offense that Baker doesn't have.

Do we know who’s been looking after the Browns’ stadium with Baker and his wife gone?

He always seemed like a guy most people thought wouldn’t make it in the NFL, but had enough success in college someone had to give him a shot. But he’s had those shots and not done much with them.

Nobody is looking after it. That's why there are skunks all over the stadium. Maybe Watson was supposed to be watching the home but he doesn't have a lot of free time, lots of glute work required.

Lance hasn’t played enough to judge anything and Purdy has a total of one start in his career, so this seems like an absurdity. And if Purdy is awesome, isn't that good for Lynch?

Shanny is absolutely, positively not going anywhere. San Fran would be morons to fire him.

I feel really bad for Lance. I think he was going to be able to do a lot with this roster and defense. And it’s not like it’s some soft tissue injury or something, he very clearly snapped his ankle after 1 game. Just sucks for the guy. He’s still actually younger than Purdy despite being in the league a couple years. I still think he has a shot to be good.

and Jed York loves Shanahan. There’s no chance he’s going anywhere (Lynch maybe, but that won’t be York’s choice. I think Lynch might go back to the easier life on TV in a year or so).

Shanahan gets possibly the longest rope of any head coach out there. Or is at least top 3.

Again, we have no idea what Lance can do given a full training camp and a full season with the roster and that defense tp back him up.

As I see it, most of the main roster comes back next year and Lance should be given the keys once more.

I will not jinx the Niners with hypotheticals about Purdy.

Same with Lynch IMO. They've got a dynamic duo going there. With the Patriots off their greatness, I'm 100% pulling for the Niners to win a Super Bowl. Weird that to other teams, winning one is Valhalla while the Patriots have six since 2001.

Lynch should be fired for the Lance trade in my opinion.

Three first-round picks when your team is stacked and has a fairly good QB already. It's not like Lance was coming in as a final product he was always going to need to develop and potentially blow your championship window while doing so.

Strong disagree. He’s the primary architect of a loaded roster, and short of landing Brady, who wasn’t available at the time, shoring up the position, given Jimmy G’s injury history, and setting up a succession plan was sound strategy IMO. Now, maybe Lance will eventually pan out, or maybe not. But I think the thought process was fine. And if he did get fired, he’d be out of work for about 5 minutes.

They’ve gone to a SB and NFCCG the past three seasons, and he/his staff - working closely with Shanahan - built one of the most talented, thoughtfully constructed rosters.

Potentially missing on Lance - who the jury is still out on - and not pursuing Brady in 2020 would arguably be big red marks on his ledger. But the initial question isn’t whether he knocked the QB position out of the park, it is whether he’s constructed a good team based on a sound process and is a good fit with your head coach. I think he has. And even if you think he’s failed because the QB position remains in flux the next question is: who would you replace him with and why would that help the team?

Don’t fuck up a good thing.

I would also add that people like to judge the flashy first-round (and what draft picks you gave up), but Lynch's staff have found one of the best linebackers playing right now in round 3 (Warner), a linebacker that is all-pro caliber in round 5 (Greenlaw), at top TE in round 5 (Kittle), starting CB in round 5 (Lenoir), Starting S in round 5 (Hufanga), and whatever Purdy turns out to be with the literally last pick in the draft.

The only pick they've actually hit big on in round 1 is Bosa (And Aiyuk late round 1 is starting to come into his own). He's built the team with the full draft and that needs to be taken into account when judging him.

Also, Lance was the starting QB coming into the year. They might be doing all this and more with him (or way less who knows), but it was a freak injury that has derailed that pick.

This is not a good take.

Maybe the Niners should have stuck with their pick at #12 (I think) and taken Mac Jones? They were looking for a big name QB in that draft. They were moving on from Jimmy G (that is another debate).

Maybe they should have taken Justin Fields instead?

Trey Lance has not failed and cannot be considered a miss yet. The clock on him just got delayed by a full year.

The issue (and that would be a good issue to have)is what happens if Purdy leads the team to a Championship or close to one.

This. They built an incredible roster and most is signed long enough term that the window is not a short "we'd better win now" one.

Brock Purdy and Jordan Mason clinch the division, just as we all thought when the season started.

It's huge to not have to rush Deebo or any of the other banged up guys back. While the 2 seed would be nice, getting healthy is more important and the niners can be no worse than the 3 seed at this point.

Brock Purdy in the playoffs... ok.. Let's go!
